Satellite Dishes GONE....

I did think it was kind of funny when they decorated them with sunflowers for the Flower and Garden festival, but I'm not exactly sad to see the dishes go. They seemed rather a bit out of place.

Oh, and the most recent link doesn't work for me either. All I get is a "Cannot find server" message.

I liked the sat dishes insomuch as they represented a communications hub, a portal to the interconnectivity of the world. Of course, in recent years they have merely been a veneer of show, an inactive presence in an otherwise active Future World. It's unfortunate. I want a return to reality in that part of the park, a return to an active interest in technology. M:S Space Race, which supposedly connects players at home to players at the attraction, is an obvious, but rather solitary, example of the progress made in this regard.

In any case, I shall miss the grand, real(istic) sculpture-like satellite dishes, despite the fact that their miniature brethren can be seen mounted atop roofs and gables, and their larger cousins clustered around television station headquarters around the country. By this time, they were a "link" to the past, though they should have been a link to the future...

The dishes were use for the disney channel show "Inside out", that show with goerge forman and those two teen kids. they were not used in years becuase the uplink now is done backstage at the newer media center.

This is really kinda amusing. I totally agree that, even now, there is some major "WOW" factor to seeing such a large communications dish. Maybe it's just because I was a child of the 80's but something about big dishes like that just scream "cutting edge technology" to me. Nevermind the fact that I have 2 18-inch dishes on my house that I rarely give a second though to or the enourmous uproar that would take place if Disney decided to put a cell tower in place of the dishes to represent modern communication technology.

I suppose it's all the vintage factor... Indeed, as I wrote, they had become a link to the past.

Yet, Epcot still needs to be grounded in the past. What would SSE be without its "vignettes" of great moments from the past? Solely looking to the future, you are bound to trip. You've got to perceive your surroundings, which include not only the future but also the past. You don't cross the street looking in one direction only.
