San Angel Inn

The cheese empanadas of the "new cantina" are amazing! I always am sad when we eat at San Angel just because there would be no room for the empanadas. However, this week I will get the chance to have both! :)

I don't get it but La Hacienda and San Angel are pretty damn authentic. We have Mexican places here too and they're just as good. But I think people's perception of Mexican is actually Tex-Mex.

Given my hometown, I don't bother with Disney's versions of two sorts of food: Mexican (including Tex Mex) or Cajun. They're nowhere near as good as they are at home, and yet they're far more expensive.

Our last trip we all had the carne asada and my daughter had the chicken tacos and I must say it was pretty tasty. This was the best service we had our entire trip. It helps the waiter refilled our chips and salsa twice. We wound up taking the last round as a snack during Illuminations.

I do not see chicken tacos on the menu. All I see is disgusting food.

Our trip in October (its just a long weekend) is the first without a stop at La Hacienda since its opened. We are going to sample around the WS (F & W for the first time for us)!
We love F&W too! We are going the September 27th and 28th and it will be an awesome 2 days, can't wait to check out the offerings this year, they usually don't change much from one year to the next but there's usually a few new/different things, you will love it!

Bottom line, what you're looking for is no longer served in San Angel.

When La Hacienda was built, it gave the San Angel group the opportunity to focus their menus on specific regions and tastes. When you eat in San Angel now, you will get a meal similar to what you would get if you went to the actual San Angel Inn in Mexico City. It's food that a real Mexican family that lives in the center of the country might prepare in their own kitchen. La Hacienda focuses a little on street food, but mostly on a menu that you might find in more coastal locales. All of the street food, fast food and Tex-Mex has been relegated to the Cantina.

San Angel's current menu is a vast improvement over the glorified cafeteria food that you remember, and it's your loss if you refuse to eat there because you find the unfamiliar to be disgusting. It has, in a matter of months, become one of the better restaurants in the World Showcase. As others have suggested, if a burrito is all you want, La Cantina would be more than happy to provide. You can even carry it into the pavilion and eat it while walking around the shops, if you're really pining for the ambiance.

Yep- still disgusting. I prefer the old menu but to each their own.

We have eaten here for dinner four times and despite the mixed reviews we have always had a great meal (and ultimate margarita). I agree that many americans mistake tex-mex for mexican and the San Angel is definitely closer to true Mexican than anything else.

Great post!

I wouldn't go so far as to judge the food in Morocco, for instance, as disgusting. 1) I've never tried the food and 2) if I'm familiar with it it just is not my taste. But there are people who absolutely love it. So yes to each his or her own. But I guess claiming something as disgusting is a bit harsh lol especially when it hasn't been tried yet. *shrug*

Are you in TN? We lived in Clarksville TN for 7 years while my hubby was stationed at 101st and went to the Opry there quite a few times. We also did the cruise on the riverboat and had a wonderful time, the kids still talk about it!
No!.. I wish..We have a club in our town, where on a Saturday night they have a dance for members who mostly like country music,so our set that we play is 90% country and I call the venue the Grand Old Opry..LOL..Would love to visit the real thing as I'am a big Cash fan..;)

I would go just to take in the atmosphere...
I'd probably order the Pollo a las Rajas...which is grilled chicken breast served with red peppers and onion cream sauce, poblano rice and queso fresco.

not that anyone cares...but that's what I would do.

This sounds good. I am going to make an ADR for it - I figure I might as well give it a try.
