Safe Areas to Live Near WDW 15-25 Min Away

Agree that a grocery store trip (in most areas) will not be a 30 minute journey to get there. We live, as I said, less than 5 miles from Disney in a major traffic area and we have three Publix stores within 5 minutes of our condo in three directions. It's pretty much like that everywhere around this area.

Plus. Once you are here you learn the "back roads" and stay away from where most of the major traffic areas. We hardly ever get on The 4 unless it's a MUST. There are many ways around the traffic and just as anywhere, you learn these the longer you live in an area.

Living in Florida or [insert state here] is not for everyone. Do your research. Scout out the areas you want to have your family living. In the end, it's always your choice where to live and in what state. It has worked out GREAT for us. Not only do we love the area & proximity to the parks. Personally & professionally our lives have flourished in Orlando.

I opened my door to my apartment tonight and a lizard followed me in. Now i have no idea where it is and how to get it out. Help! Are you sure want to live in lizard heaven?

Hahahahaha ... Classic!

Orlando is a reptile heaven these days. I see more lizards on the way to the fitness room every day than I did my entire life before moving to Orlando.

Just put him on the lease and ask where his half of rent is ... That should get him out :)

I agree lol. These lizards are crazy. I'm not going to kill it i just need to find it. The problem, I know it is in my bedroom and i can't go to sleep knowing there is a reptile loose in my domain

From talking to my friends that do live down there, they all say that the closer you are to the parks, the worse your regular commutes are. The parks are a novelty, living 40+ minutes away will be the difference between you having to travel for 30 minutes to get some groceries or 5 minutes when you live a little further away. My wife and I plan to move to Florida some day but I will be nowhere near any theme park. Cost of living is pretty cheap in the entire state, and homes in florida in general are pretty inexpensive when you are just a short distance away from the major attractions.

I live about 50 minutes from my home to the Western Way entrance. I think anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour away is the best bet. Clermont is pretty nice and relatively close. As someone earlier said, the greater Ocala area is very nice, especially if you like a more country atmosphere. In town it gets much more dense. But it's likely outside your target area. Check out Winter Garden as well.

There's a lot of smaller cities around here that have some great, rejuvenated historic downtown areas.

My regret is not making my wife move down here after the housing bubble burst. Three thousand square foot houses with 4/2 bed/bath and less than 10 years old for about 100k....man, you can't beat that.
I actually know someone who built new down there... Talk about insane! All over Florida deals can be had compared to the rest of the country.

Where I am, homes are fairly cheap but they're older, and by property taxes are insane and state income tax is disgustingly high.

We saw houses that were 3 times more square footage than our own, worth 4x as much, with 1/3 the property taxes....

I love the area Plus. Of course the Weather TIRED OF SNOW

I would suggest you visit in August or September before falling in love with the weather. Temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, humidity at least 85%. When it's not raining, relentless sunshine (after all, Florida IS the Sunshine State!). Florida in the summer isn't for the faint of heart. Just a day without A/C in the summer will make you wish for some snow, trust me. And then there's these little tropical cyclones.....

There's a reason we Floridians worship Mr. Carrier as we go from our air-conditioned house to our air-conditioned car to our air-conditioned office. And live in fear of the A/C going out. Snow birds (our term for those up north who fly south in the winter) visit in the winter, not the summer.

As someone who just spent 5 days without power after Hurricane Her Mean, that warmth and sunshine ain't all it's cracked up to be.....
I went 5 days without power after an unexpected snow storm in October. I've never been more cold in my life. Tomato-tomaato

For those of you wanting to move to Florida, consider these assets of this crazy state:

Hot... from May to November... and sometimes even Christmas Day (my daughter was due on Christmas Day...it was 85 and I had the A/C on)
Humid... except for maybe January and February
Bugs.... we have them ALL...and some of the cockroaches fly - usually the big ones
Rain... usually between 2 and 3 pm, in buckets. Then it's even more humid, but you can watch the steam rise off the sidewalks
Crazy drivers... and lots of them are not young. I think Florida has the largest population of over 65 year olds. Avoid the Villages, they all seem to live there...
Traffic... it's awful, just plain awful. Takes me 30 minutes to get across town...a distance of 15 miles... because NO ONE ever heard of synchronized traffic lights, apparently

However, nothing beats the Panhandle Beaches. You can go swimming in April. Crystal clear azure water. Beautiful white powder sand. Sitting on the back deck of the Blue Parrot at St. George with a cooler of brews and some crab/shrimp/oysters is nothing short of heaven. Almost makes the mosquitoes, cockroaches, heat & humidity, crazy drivers (most of them are residents), yes those tourists, and wacko politicians tolerable.

I love where I work now (former disney cm) and the weather is great but if I had the option to relocate I probably would. The tourists bring money to our economy and thats great but it can get very annoying very quickly having to deal with them everyday. Also the drivers are awful, my God I get scared everytime I get on the road (snowbirds, tourists, etc.), when your trying to get to work and some guy is going 30 in a 55....happens all the time. I love florida and all but I hate living so close to disney, if I were to relocate it would be to northern FL. Also I think the best perk isnt living so close to disney or the beaches but being able to go on cruises much more frequently...lol

Come on up to my neck of the woods. We've got the best beaches in the state, hills, trees (do they have any trees left in South Florida?), just gorgeous up here. And our sinkholes are full of deep, crystal clear water... some of the best swimming spots. But don't tell anyone... we don't want all of y'all down south moving up here. ;)

Ha, asking "where is the best place to live in FL?" is kind of like asking a hunter or fisherman "hey where is the best place to hunt/fish?" We know where it is but we dont want to tell you haha...we are losing trees everyday due to housing being built, its awful.

We love our trees... we protect our trees to the point that 100,000 of us lost power last Thursday, mainly because of those trees. I'm serious, people get into arguments over our live oaks and pine trees. And cry when they have to remove a tree from their property. Even if the tree is dying and in danger of falling and splitting their house in two.
