If you like to live very close to your neighbors with no land at all (yard), then Orlando is for you. The houses in the area are more expensive 280,000$ up to 585,000$ plus. It is like living in the city, especially around the airport areas.:(
We are also moving to Florida, but we're thinking more like an hour outside of Orlando in Ocala ( The Horse Capital of the World) ( country-like). The houses are a bit more affordable, and you're still close to WDW.;)
There are communities such as Clermont, Winter Garden, Apopka, and so many other surrounding areas that would also be nice to live in.
We just had interviews and went house-hunting.
Good luck to you. I would also suggest to avoid Kissimmee.:(

We made the move to Orlando nearly three years ago and live in an area called Dr. Phillips. We are less than 5 miles form Disney property and LOVE the area.

Living in a condo (personal choice) as I never want to own a home again in my life. This area of Orlando is a sought after area to live in from what we gathered before moving here. It's a perfect location for us as well. Close to the parks. My wife work in Dr. Phillips so her commute to work is nothing. I work from home & own my business so my commute is from the bedroom to the desk in the mornings.

We pay $850 per month for a 1/1 condo in a gated community with 24/7 security. Our condo sits facing Big Sand Lake and has nice pool areas, gym, etc. Condo is roughly 1,000 square feet with a balcony, washer/dryer, etc.

Sorry @AJH219 but I disagree with the novelty of the parks wearing off fast. We have been here, as I said for going on three years and still visit the parks 2-3 times per week on average. We are in Disney Springs at least twice as week as well. We moved here to spend more time at Disney as we grew tired of paying out the nose three or four times a year to visit. Cheaper (for us) just to live here :)

I'm sure you have been here much longer and that view may change for us as well. However, Disney was the main draw for us to move here and we love it so far! To each their own :)

Other than Dr. Phillips, these areas around Disney are nice areas to live in as well; Celebration, Bay Hill, Horizon West & Windermere.

I live 20 minutes away in Ocoee off the 429 our area is safe and a nice area the only downside is lots of residential building going on in our area.

-Winter Garden is a nice area and safe
-Windermere is a nice area and safe as well

We're looking to move down this way as well. Just depends on what facilities my company has out here, but it would most likely be either Lakeland or Tampa. The crime stats don't really bother us, we're already living outside of the countries third most dangerous city. It's the tourists driving that scares us.

North of Disney and West of Disney is a great area and with the quick access off the 429 to Western Way you miss a good chunk of the tourists.

Just a comment on safe. No matter where you live the biggest mistake anyone can make is having a false sense of security and letting your guard down because your area has a label as safe. Criminals rely on people being at ease and that translates into not being careful and attentive to details, like locking your car or front door etc.

From talking to my friends that do live down there, they all say that the closer you are to the parks, the worse your regular commutes are. The parks are a novelty, living 40+ minutes away will be the difference between you having to travel for 30 minutes to get some groceries or 5 minutes when you live a little further away. My wife and I plan to move to Florida some day but I will be nowhere near any theme park. Cost of living is pretty cheap in the entire state, and homes in florida in general are pretty inexpensive when you are just a short distance away from the major attractions.

Except life is boring unless you are on the coast. I love my options each day, I can go to a park for just an hour or cruise around Epcot or just drop into the poly for a drink and people watch, or hit the coast in 90 minutes. celebration is central to it all. Every day is like a vacation. So I put up with some I4 traffic but I take it in stride and life is good. Oh and I have a Publix on my corner no 30 minute grocery commute. Only the types A's freat the traffic.
Hang loose and live a little.
