Running Food

I was just wondering what other runners eat and/or drink before their runs?
Morning runs: grits and coffee
Noon runs: bigger breakfast around 7am, nothing for lunch till i get back
Afternoon runs: Normal breakfast, lunch and a banana 2 hours before run for snack.

Breakfast is usually large bagel with PB and coffee
Lunch is usually a homemade sandwich, a few extras and a fruit like grapes

Always tons of water during the day.

I am one of those people who cannot eat early in the morning most of the time and cannot eat right before a run. If I am going to get up at 430 and be out the door at 445, i will have one of the mocha flavored Gu gels and some water.

Now if i am doing a run later in the day, i will have a granola bar or a bagel or something lke that 45-60 minutes before.

Depends on when I am running. Morning run - either a bagel or some peanut butter toast. Later runs - normal food, just nothing to heavy or spicy. A handful or granola or similar before hand. Drink is usually plain water. Nothing fancy.

Normally I have no problem with spicy foods, but now I know not to have Chipotle the day before I run. Their hottest salsa and running long distances do not go together!

For short runs I normally do not have anything. Long runs over 8 miles I will have two Clif Bars and half a gatorade. That will last me over 15 miles.

I usually have a bland version of a Joey from Moes. Usually just the rice, black beans and chicken. A sprinkle of cheese, but nothing crazy for a night before the race meal.

I'll have to find an equivalent October 1 night.

Before

It's it's a morning (which is usualy a race, becaue otherwise I run in the afternoon)

Cerial (rice chex, cheerios, wheeties) and coffee, and then water.

If it's an after work run, it's usualy around 6:00 PM, so I ate whatever I had for lunch around 12:00 (usualy a sandwich or some leftovers and some fruit), and I will grab a banana or handfull or raisins, or some peanut butter before I head out the door.

When I get back from a longer run, 7+ miles lets say, I eat a banana and some protien powder in milk (with some Quick powder, because the protien is chalk flavored) then drink some Hydralite.

the biggest thing on race day is to stick with what your body is used to.

In training, I will eat a banana before a run and if the run is longer than an hour, will take a gel at the 60 minute mark and another gel at every hour afterwards.

at most races, around here anyway, there is free beer at the end of the race so it has become a tradition to down a cup of beer at the end of a run . . . but that doesn't work so well at Disney races as that particular carb can be a bit hard to come by. :lookaroun

That was the best advice you gave me when I started to run last November. For the 2 halves I have completed since then, everything is exactly the same and every thing has been great on race day. So... thank you.

I had 2 beers after the Mercedes and 2 after Talladega. Best beers I ever had. :D I wonder if our free Food and Wine festival drink voucher will cover a beer. Id die before having vino after a race.

I eat a small teacup full of shredded wheat or raisin bran and a glass of water. It has to be 1.5 to 2 hours before I run. If I am running longer than a hour, I will do ten minute increments of a gel or power bar during that time. Chased down with small amounts of water. What I've eaten the night before is also a consideration for race day.

Oh, forgot to mention, I GU between 45-60 minutes of a run and then once more in about 25 minutes on a long run. I havent run anything over 1:48ish yet in any of my training for my halves.

If I do the full this year here locally, Ill have many more GU's after that first one. :D

Not to get too far off track, but I hope so too. I'm not a wine drinker so that would hold no attraction to me. But I can do with a good beer. And they have had a few decent ones the last few years.

Good. I am looking forward to sitting back in WS and drinking a beer or 2

Years ago, they had a great pasta dish at Olivia's at OKW that I replicate the night before a race. Grilled chicken, penne, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes, in olive oil, topped with grated cheese. The morning of, it's a bagel w/ peanut butter, a banana and a glass of milk. It's tradition for my post-race meal to be a large serving of Mexican food.
