Pre-Trip Run Now,Wine Later: My 1st Ever 5K & Half Marathon

As the title states, I will be running in my first ever 5K as well as my first ever half marathon in, where else, WDW! I made a New Years resolution this year to get back into shape and my goal was to run a half marathon, and of course being the Disney nut I am, only wanted to run in WDW (it also gave me a great reason to force my husband to come along this time since my last trip to WDW was a solo trip in November). So lets get to the details:

The Who: Myself (Megan) and my husband Alex. My husband has only been to WDW once and it was with me back in 2012, he decided he never wanted to go back, but I married him anyway and I'm trying my hardest to convert him ;). This will be my 16th trip.

The When: November 6th-10th.

The Where: We are staying at Port Orleans Riverside

The Why: For the Wine and Dine Half Marathon and the Jingle Jungle 5K. Only I will be running, but my husband will be there for support (also he's a doctor so he may come in very useful for my aches and pains if I actually finish the race without dying).

Friday November 6th:
I'm planning on taking the first flight out of Philly to Orlando so we will get to Disney bright and early. I'll let him relax at the hotel while I head over to WWOS to pick up my race stuff. Once everything has been situated we'll head over to Hollywood Studios where we have a dinner reservation at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater at 5:35 and head back to the room early to get a good nights sleep. (I was originally planning on having this be our day at Magic Kingdom, but I was not able to get a reservation at Be Our Guest for this day, I'm going to keep checking and if one opens up I might switch our HS day to Monday)

Saturday November 7th:
Run the Jingle Jungle 5K, eat breakfast at Tusker House at 8:20, then spend the morning at Animal Kingdom. Have an early lunch at Flame Tree BBQ before heading back to the resort to relax before the half marathon. I'll eat a little something a few hours before the race (still researching food as well as timing for a night race). Run the half marathon, then meet up with Alex for the Finish Line Party. Stay until we are exhausted then head back to the resort.

Sunday November 8th:
Sleep in!!! Head to Epcot whenever we wake up and enjoy the Food and Wine Festival. No reservations this day as we will use the festival for our lunch/dinner.

Monday November 9th:
Have breakfast at Kona Cafe at 8:00 then head to Magic Kingdom. Have dinner at Be Our Guest at 4:50. (If I can switch our Be Our Guest dinner to Friday I will since MK closes early this night for the MVMCP. Also I am waiting to see if the Osborne Lights will be back this year and if they are figure out when they begin, last year it was on a Sunday, if that's the case, we will head over to HS after dinner to see the lights). If we keep this as our MK day, I plan on heading over to the Poly to go to Trader Sam's at night, maybe watch the fireworks from there before heading back to our resort.

Tuesday November 10th:
Come home :(

That's it so far until I make our Fastpass selections!! For anyone who has run the Wine and Dine and the Jingle Jungle any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. I have started training already since I've never done a race before and since I have bilateral knee problems as well as back problems from old gymnastics injuries I wanted to give my body plenty of time to get adjusted.

I've run other Disney races but Wine & Dine will be my first 1/2 marathon to! Best of luck, training starts soon :)

Trader SAMs is awesome! Try inside and outside.

The osbourne lights are scheduled to be going and are advertised for wine and dine

Good luck with your training and your first half!!! I'm so glad you told me about the Osbourne lights, I saw them for the first time last year and it's something I really wanted my husband to experience, it might just be the disney magic he needs to finally get it :)

Love the plans and have a wonderful run at WDW. I would imagine that you are training already for the half marathon. Following along.

I ran the JK5k in 2013 but couldn't get it for this year as it sold out so quick. I was never a runner so followed a starter plan which worked. The atmosphere was great. Enjoy it. And running a half marathon too that's brave. I thought it was a great opportunity to dress up. When will you ever get the same chance again!?
And I am sure you can convert your husband 19 years ago my husband didn't want to go but now he can't get enough either and we've been every year since (art from one)
Might see you at Riverside as we arrive on 5th Nov.

Yeah I wish he would convert, but I don't see that ever happening, but atleast he is okay with me enjoying disney whenever I want. How long are you staying in November??

@Tinkerbell 8, I ran the JJ5K last year and will be arriving the day after it this year, at SSR Nov 8-11.

I hadn't really trained to run it, was planning on just brisk-walking it because doc told me I shouldn't run on account of likeliness of herniated disks (painful!!!). But I was inspired by the atmosphere and broke into a run. Also was trying to get around those who were slow-walking it. Ask anything you want to know. You are certainly ambitious running a 5K and a half in one weekend!

@Longers it looks like we will overlap again--I'd love to meet up with you! Your trip reports are such fun. :)

Maybe all three of us can find a few moments to get together for a cuppa or an adult beverage? ;)

That sounds like fun. Let's try to make it happen. We could even make each other's TR!
I am showing my brother proper Disney this year. I have him staying at POR his first time in a Disney hotel! Think Chris and him might go golf so there should be some time somewhere. Plans for the first few days are Sat and Sun - Magic Kingdom But it could change. Let's share plans closer to Nov!

I'd love to meet up! Once it gets closer we should try to plan something. I already have a plan on which parks we are going to on certain days since I've already made my dinner ressies, but we can even meet up at the resort bar if our plans don't overlap.

Looks like this might need to happen on Sunday 8th in Epcot? I guess either way I could get over from MK (unless our plans change) anyway as we were going to Try to catch Maxi Priest to have a look. I might just have found the title of my TR (how many of the WDW Magic family can I meet). How exciting as there are a few names on here I constantly see and think how nice it would be to meet up. (Given I missed out on the meet up cruise!) Eek

Can't believe Disney is less than 2 months away! I was able to score Fastpasses for everything I wanted. Friday Nov 6th we have a FP+ for TOT @ 1:55-2:55, TSMM @ 3:25-4:25 and VOTLM @ 4:55-5:10 (then our dinner reservation at Sci-Fi @5:35). We will stay at HS to watch the Osborne lights then head back to the hotel early to get a good nights sleep. Saturday Nov 7th we have FP+ for EE @ 9:35-10:35, KRR @ 10:55-11:55, and KS @ 11:55-12:55 (I'm trying to switch the EE and KS times since we are having breakfast at Tusker House @ 8:20). Sunday Nov 8th we have FP+ for SE @ 10:55-11:55, Soarin @ 12:0-1:00 then SWNF @ 1:05-2:05. I wasn't too worried about FP for Epcot since we will be there the night before for the Finish Line Party and we will probably ride some stuff then. Monday Nov 9th we have FP+ for BTMRR @ 11:00-12:00, PPF @ 12:45-1:45 and SDMT @ 2:00-3:00. Making FP+ this time was much easier than the first time I did it and it seemed like there was more availability this year.
