Rumor: Splash Mountain receiving WDW-style logs

I dunno. I feel like it wouldn’t be DLs Splash Mountain if they weren’t zipping along at that quick pace. Surely, it was designed that way right? It’s hard to believe that it wasn’t the intention for them to go that speed when they built the ride and designed the flumes/ logs?

I still remember when I first started posting on this site about how DL Splash Mountain was superior to WDW, you were the only one that had my back amidst all the hate. Lol

Thanks bruh.

DL's Splash is alright but I really miss the animated frog shadow effect in the waiting line. Instead, DL's awkwardly spoils the last scene of the ride while you wait. Spoilers!

Lol I forgot that was you. Anytime bruh. Seems like most people unanimously agree that WDWs is better. I forgot, have you been on WDWs?

Haha I think you have this idea that WDW's is this lame boring version that just goes put-put thru the entire ride. In the end, it's about the difference of 1.5 minutes of ride time -- just long enough (IMO) to enjoy the show scenes (which are way more flushed out) a little bit more.

In all seriousness, considering what went wrong with DL's Splash Mountain's log and flume design during its construction, I would not be at all surprised to find that the logs were not supposed to go that quickly past the show scenes. We may never know. :D Don't get me wrong: I love the ride; it's a hoot. And it's better than WDW's in a few ways, and thrill-wise they're about equal. But when it comes to effectively telling the story, WDW's blows DL's out of the water just like DL's Pirates is so much better than Florida's.

Ya I think I get the idea from the ride thru videos. Slower, brighter, better sets and show and more of a country/ western sound track since it’s located in Frontierland. I like how DLs is kind of weird and more like a Fantasyland dark ride on steroids. I like the pace and definitely prefer the soundtrack.

WDWs is probably more in line with most people’s tastes. But knowing what I like, I’m pretty sure I’ll feel the same even after riding WDWs

What Went wrong?

Ya I think it’s pretty clear WDWs has the better show in the stricter sense of the word. I mean Just the lighting alone. But shomehow, that adds to the experience for me. Instead of being this cutesy story that’s bright and cheery it comes off as this weird trip though a mountain. It’s like what 80s kids movies were like. They weren’t really child friendly at all and had a little bit of darkness and weird in them. (Return to Oz, Never Ending Story, Roger Rabbit). In WDWs, it feels like your in a beautiful bright blue sunny day. In DLs it feels like your in some world within the mountain, eventhough I’m not entirely sure that’s what they were going for. It also feels like their is a bigger payoff at the Zipidee Doo Dah scene since the tone is so different from the darker/ominous scenes leading up to it.

But who knows? Maybe I Ride WDWs for the first time and the show scenes are so well done that I don’t mind the slower pace, slower soundtrack, and brighter feel.

The original fleet of logs had to be replaced, as test riders were getting drenched-- as in buckets-of-water-on-your-head-leaving-you-ankle-deep-in-water-in-the-log. (I also heard there was one problematic turn where the logs kept getting stuck, but I can't find the source.)

The redesigned logs were lighter by about 500 pounds, with capacity reduced from 8 per log to 7. Then there was a lot more testing and tweaking. This resulted in the ride's opening being delayed by several months.

My own experience with the delay (in the pre-internet days) was a trip to Disneyland where I stood staring longingly at the not-yet-open ride being tested by workers. The logs clearly were a work-in-progress, with unfinished fronts made of a different material that looked like they could be switched out or re-sculpted. I offered my services as a tester. Didn't work. :D

A former cast member told a story on the moustalgia podcast that the original logs flew out of the flume on the final drop.

Sounds like urban legend. Not that I don't trust former cast members, but they get their sources from (mostly) the same places we do, and can be just as mistaken.

No, I agree with everything you've said. You and I both like disneylands because it is so weird. You wouldn't prefer wdw's. To me, the tone set by the score and supported by the lighting is what makes it so amazing. It is so driven by the score's tonal shifts that I would love it just as much if I was blind. Most people prefer wdw's but I think when they made it grander and improved the set lighting, that isn't all they did. They made it way more one note. Its like riding through the bright sunny beginnings of a winnie the pooh dark ride.
