Roundabouts at Disney

But if they work in Europe and many other parts of the world then I don't think its the roundabout that is stupid and more likely it is the Americans.

Maybe. I suppose if we had them as long as other countries then they would not be that big of a deal. Just like the metric system. We tried that a while back and Americans collectively stood up and said "Nope! Not having that in MY house!" and that was that. At this point it has become akin to the 2nd Amendment here in the US. We are far too down the rabbit hole to make a change like this now.

I can count on one finger how many times someone here has been hit by lightening. But you know what we have lost count of? Accidents in the roundabout near here. And it is not just a cute little circle with pretty flowers in the middle with birds chirping a sweet melody. This thing has traffic flying into it from two directions of an interstate highway and two directions from a state highway. Oh, did I forget to mention that there are TWO of them? These things have claimed lives already.

This is literally the roundabout I am talking about. Left/right is I-265 and top/bottom is IN-62. Traffic is flying into this deathtrap at 65mph East and West and 50+mph North and South. I get the impression you thought I was referring to some cute little cirle in some random suburban neighborhood.

Is that a Railroad Crossing at the bottom left too? All they're missing now is a light rail going down the the street.

By the way, this conversation is exactly what we deal with all the time as an Engineering firm. The township/planners want the traffic circles installed due to aesthetics, improved traffic flow, and that they're generally considered safer in the design community. Then we present the design to the general public during community board meetings and they're up in arms that they're impassible death traps.

I think the issue is familiarity. I grew up in central jersey, there are several circles on major local roads towards the shore that see a lot of volume in the summer. I would drive through pretty frequently and never noticed or heard of any issues with accidents or pedestrian strikes. My wife grew up in Brooklyn, a land completely devoid of traffic circles. She still gets nervous driving through them.

Traffic circles are supposed to be safer because motorists are supposed to slow down and pay more attention to their surroundings as they approach. Unfortunately, these motorists are humans who get nervous, don't pay attention, make bad decisions like decide to check facebook while hurdling a 2 ton missile at 65mph, etc. It's not like four way stops or traffic lights are immune to people blowing through an intersection when they're not supposed to.

This is pretty much it in a nutshell. People hate change.

Here in Jacksonville, a diverging diamond interchange was recommended by FDOT at San Pablo and JTB. People lost their damn minds over it. The fact that it was safer and moved traffic better was irrelevant. It was different, therefore wrong.

Best it still the whacky Swindon roundabout that defies all with 7 roundabouts in one.

Its the signs as you approach that one I love!

Why are you so obsessed with stupid roundabouts? I never said I can't use them , but there are other drivers on the road and from the amount of wrecks I have seen on these stupid useless things, and NO LIFE is worth it for a stupid roundabout. I don't get your obsession. They really are stupid and don't work. Maybe they are great for Europe but not here.
Why are stop signs worth not just a life, but more lives?

Just like the metric system. We tried that a while back and Americans collectively stood up and said "Nope! Not having that in MY house!" and that was that.

As I recall, the problem was that they (whoever "they" are) didn't make a clean break - they put the metric system up along with the American system. Remember when you had 2 sets of numbers on your speedometer, or had both numbers on highway signs? And most Americans just looked at the numbers they were used to and ignored the metric numbers. After a few years of this, "they" gave up.

Are you making this about me to deflect from your own poor choices? I could ask you why you're obsessed with getting rid of them, and it would be equally nonsensical. You're preaching from your limited world view of idiot America, disagreeing with you doesn't mean I'm obsessed. If it makes you feel better though...

Yes
or...some people here just overreact to change and the majority are intelligent enough to handle them just fine. But as we know, some people are just bad drivers, whether they are not paying attention and run a stop sign, or they fly into the air through a roundabout.

So we finally have a good argument for having roundabouts: EPIC STUNTS AND CRASHES.

You know what's funny?

Stop hating on America...we all know that the "Europeans are great drivers" line is a myth...They drive around like they are in bumper cars. In their Mercedes and Peugeots with a million dents.. :)

Studys are not life. I have seen real life, There is a wreck at least once a week and most of them are bad. I don't know where these "studies" were taken, but they don't hold up. My town is a relatively small town and the amount of accidents caused by people not knowing how to navigate these roundabouts is insane. For a town of about 50,000 there were a total of 62 accidents on the roundabouts in 2018 and I think probably more this year, and from those accidents just what I know about we have a women who lost her leg from the knee down, a high school senior that went into a coma on her way to her high school graduation who has had to literally relearn everything from walking to talking, a very promising 12 year old baseball pitcher who's arm is shattered and may never play baseball again, and worse of all the guy an the motor cycle that was killed instantly. Sorry doe not sound very safe to me.
The whole feeling that they are unsafe stems from the idea that if there is an accident, the news will say "another accident on such and such roundabout while forgetting to mention the 14 accidents that happened on the same day a the accumulated stop sign stops. It just forms opinions that all the accidents are on roundabouts because they never hear about the others.
So to get at the nuts and bolts of your idea... I should sacrifice my life so that in the long run people can be educated about something they may never fully understand? Sounds reasonable.
Well, to be fair... you can't fix stupid! However, in the case of drivers you can test them and if they do not know how to negotiate then they don't get a licence. There really is nothing simpler then a roundabout. Nothing! All one needs to be is smarter then the floor mat in their cars.

My grandson just got his drivers licence and I was shocked when I found out the they don't even test them to see if they can parallel park? Parallel parking still exists but, unlike years ago, if you couldn't do it you didn't get the right to drive. You should have to know how to safely stop and put the vehicle out of the way of others as well.

People should be retested every few years to make sure they know the latest traffic laws, but yeah they don't even test if drivers can do basic things like parallel park. Missed all the mailboxes? Congrats new driver..you've passed!

I heard this:

Fun story:
I passed the parallel parking section with flying colors. Treated the instructor with a huge amount of respect. I failed when the instructor guy told me to maintain 25mph on a pothole filled side street (to the point where I couldn't even straddle the holes) and I said I'd rather not damage my car. He said other things after that and went into fully angry mode. Followed up with I'll fail if I didn't maintain speed and I said "I'd rather fail then have to replace suspension pieces and a flat tire due to some *front organ on a mans body* head telling me to damage my car". He said "You know, I was a state trooper" to which I responded with a glance at his size and said "I see why you aren't anymore". Gave him a fun ride back to the DMV. "I'd given you a ticket for that" to which I said "But that would require you to not sit at the donut shop all day".

Yeah, I take good care of my cars.

Passed another test 2 weeks later in record time. They haven't seen anyone backup and parallel as fast as I did in a long time. Had a super nice guy that didn't force me to go an unrealistic speed on a side street either. It was a good time actually.
