Roundabouts at Disney

In my area of NJ (southern NJ), over the last decade or so, they have actively been removing all roundabouts - and there were MANY that had been there for decades - they caused too many accidents, I don't think drivers knew how to drive them.

I think Ohio is going the other direction. My town that I live in has put in two new roundabouts on the same street less than a mile apart. When the first one went in, they made it two lanes, which caused loads of accidents as people were not yielding to the left as they are supposed to as well as the area was too small for two lanes. They have since reduced it to one lane, but the drivers still don't yield to anyone and I have seen people actually have to stop in the roundabout or get in an accident. The other one just opened and about the same problem is happening-no yielding and people accelerating in the roundabout, which is supposed to be 15 mph. People are so upset about it that it looks like all the city council members up for re-election are going to be voted out as the residents told them we did not want the first one, let alone the second one and basically they told us "oh well." They just spent more of our tax money on educating us via the mail and internet of how to drive in a roundabout.

They've been popping up in random spots here in southwestern PA. I love them and would like to see more of them. We actually had a busy intersection replaced with a oval a few years ago and it's made a massive difference in traffic.

From what I've seen and who I've talked to it almost seems like the younger generation likes them while the older generation hates them because they're new and scary. My parents hated them until they went through them enough times and now they love them. Educating people on how they work here in the US is by far the worse part.

It's not the road system, it's the idiot Americans that can't understand the complexity of yielding (or they're arrogant and "me first") nor that they aren't for turning the wrong way into.
It would benefit traffic and commuter times if we instituted the priority road system that Europe uses... if Americans would actually drive it properly. But this is why we can't have nice things in the US.

You're right. Unfortunately, Americans can't bother to learn (or follow) basic traffic rules or put their phones down long enough to know if the light is red or green, and there's little traffic enforcement anymore (at least in Florida). We're sort of doomed in that regard. If it was a simple case of Darwinism, that would be one thing..but it almost always seems to be the other party that ends up harmed.

This generated a nice discussion. Themes seem to be as communities get used to them they learn to use them and mostly appreciate them. Old style nj rotaries are different then modern roundabouts. I read they are starting to put them in Orlando. I agree may not be a great idea with all tourists but think Disney should test it on a minor intersection to see how it goes. Especially if they have goals to reduce carbon. It might help!

They have put a few Roundabouts in my area most people don't have a clue as to how to yield-- many come to a full stop for no reason. I even saw someone go straight across up over the center to the other side. They work well when people know how to use them

we had 2 installed in our area. Lots of newspaper articles, TV news spots describing how they function... and I cant count how many drivers have ignored the signs and have just plowed straight across them to the other side. And many accidents from entering the lanes without looking for clearance.

Not necessarily. The major one near here has been steadily causing accidents for years. We never had a roundabout before and then one day this little gem popped up. People acted like they lost their minds. They couldn't (and still can't) handle this thing.

Its very similar in the UK, where there is space to do so many simple junctions now have roundabouts.

But also as we have more roundabouts in Europe they form a central part of driving lessons and tests. If the US has fewer roundabouts it is therefore harder to teach how to drive round them.

People In America outright ignore a simple yield sign. It wouldn't matter if these were all you had in this country. People here are typically arrogant and feel that everyone on the planet is in their way or owes them something. Yield signs mean nothing. Roundabouts even less so. Couple that with people driving while on their phones and bam! Accidents everywhere.

up with more cars driving into the side of a Disney bus. Floridians are bad drivers who remain in denial by blaming the tourists and the tourists just make things worse.

When I first moved here everyone blamed tourists. Learned pretty quick that isn't the case. IDK what area you drive, but my experience is that nobody goes at stop signs. I see three cars stopped and just looking at each other and no one will move. See that all the time. Same with lights, probably 20-30% less cars get through a light than should because people will just not go.

I think roundabouts would be a good idea around Disney. Not too many, but there are certainly some smaller roads it would be a big benefit.

People in the US can not properly use turn lanes there is no way they can use roundabouts. We have a couple in my hometown in Texas and there are weekly wrecks to the point that there is a petition going around to have them removed.

Anyone who signs it should lose their license by default because they're not intelligent enough to be trusted to drive a vehicle.
