room comfort

I have family that has just returned from WDW and they could not get cool in the rooms they were in.The maintainace crew told them that ALL resort hotels are now controlled with an electronic lock-out and the thermostat cannot go below 68.Has anyone else heard about this if so I would like to save my money instead of going to be uncomfortable.I have tried getting an answer from the resort but they just give me the run-around and not a solid answer.

AKL this past April was too warm upon our return every night.

And to think we already had our circulating fan there, (we use it for extra noise insulation). All we needed to do was tie a ribbon to it and leave it on through the day!

Ya gotta love WDWMagic.com!!!!!

Why did WDW really think this was a good idea anything can be defeated if everyone put their ideas together.Thank You, and we look forward to being in P.O Riverside for Christmas 2005.

There will be a very low percentage of guests who will go to the trouble of taking fans with them to defeat motion sensors, so the plan should continue to save energy.

I Like the new thermostat system myself.

We stayed at The Polynesian several years ago and my wife and I BOTH got sicker than dogs because we went from extreme Heat ( 95ºF ) into a freezing cold resort room.

We would turn down the thermostat when we left, but Mouskeeping would crank it back down thinking they were doing us a favor.

At least your body has time to adjust to the changes more gradually this way.

Never had a problem with this. We were at All-Star Sports in June and it was always plenty cool for us. Didn't notice it being warm at all except the first time we entered on check-in.

We stayed at POFQ in May and were freezing!!!

Make sure you keep the curtains closed at all times, this helps with keeping it like ICE!

I would reccomend bringing a small fan and attaching a ribbon to it. This should keep the motion detector happy.
That will not work nor will the Bobbing Bird idea. The "motion detectors" are actually infrared detectors. The human body generates infrared radiation at the strongest wavelength of 9.4um. That is the only thing that will activate the detectors. You'd have to leave a child or a dog in the room to "fool" the detector.

Also, the lens on the detector has a viewing angle of 95º in both the vertical and horizontal plane. The IR source must have some motion.

If you just continue to press the "temp down" button after it thinks it is 68, it will eventually let you go lower. I had two rooms successfully down to 66, and at that point the motion sensors seemed to stop functioning and the AC stayed on.

That EXACT thing happened to me at the Poly. My husband was the culprit in my case. He likes to keep our room like a meat locker! I wouldn't mind the thermostat returning to 75 while we're gone, but 80?! Crazy!

S_Grise,

That's exactly how we feel too! We'd never turn the thermostat down to 68 if the darn cooling system would work correctly. We prefer somwhere around 72F in the summer months.

The only reason we, (and I imagine lots of others here), crank the thing down to 68 is because our dear landlord (Disney) has circumvented our ability to keep our room @ a nice comfortable range, thus causing us to attempt to force the system to achieve our comfort level.

I'm always freezing in WDW hotel rooms. I've never had a problem with the room being warm. Whenever we've returned to our room we've found it nice and cool. In fact we alway bump up the temperature. I normally end up wearing socks and sometimes pajama bottoms to bed. Then again we don't have AC at home so everything feels cool to us.

I just got back from 4 nights at SSR and I could get the thermostat down to 65. After 2 days I cranked it up to 70 because my wife and kids were freezing, and I thought it was a little cool. We had no problem with the room getting down to nice and cool in no time. I guess that these are on average, the newest units on site so maybe they work better. I had read a few threads about the temperature problem that people have had, and was ready for problems, but like I said everything worked fine.

We ran into the same problem at the Pop Century Resort, even with the temp set down to 68º it never got comfortable in the room. I would be interested to see what temp a stand alone thermometer would show.

Most hotels I have stayed in would at least start to cool if by time you get up in the morning. This last trip was the only time I can remember taking both the comforter and blanket off the bed trying to stay cool, with not much luck I might add.

I have had the exact same complaint the last few times we were there. At POP, Coranado, and CBR. Now, I live a couple hours away on the gulf and I have dual central a/c units and in MY house I keep the bedrooms at 72 and the living areas at 74.I am comfortable with these temps and I use ceiling fans most of the time. While at Disney the thermostat will read 68 after running for an eternity but I'm just getting comfortable. On my last visit which was at the CSR I brought my travel alarm which has the thermometer built in. Guess what,at 68 on the disney thermostat it read 74 on my travel alarm. I tried it out at home-exact correct tempertures in my bedroom and living room as what my corresponding thermostat read. Either the thermostats are junk or they are improperly set up for the room demographics.

I have to have a fan going at night as well. I need a big box fan with lots of noise. I have gotten my DH and DD "addicted" to the sound of one too. But I found walking around the parks all day in the heat worked wonders at helping me sleep without it. But as soon as we got back home, it was on again. :)

We found it was cool enough in our room at POP Century. It didn't seem to be hot in the room when we got back from going to the parks.

I haven't stayed at WDW in the summer since I was a kid. My wife and I will be at the WL the end of July beginning of Aug. I guess we will find out how uncomfortable the rooms are then. Does anyone know if the lobby area at WL is well air-conditioned? If it is to warm in our room when we return from being in the humidity we could just enjoy the lobby area until we cool down and then go to our room.

Sort of off-topic, but we froze our butts off in every restaurant we went to on our last trip. Have the restaurant temperatures been moderated a bit too (I hope)? The coldest was The Brown Derby. My daughters were putting the cloth napkins across their shoulders like shawls.

Anyone stay at the Sports? Hows the temperature there? I would love to know since we will be there in 2 weeks and in the middle of summer. Seems like the last time we were there, our room was freezing cold when we got back to it. I just can't imagine coming back from the parks hot and sweaty to an 80 degree room. That would definately ruin the magic for me!!!

We did the same thing, we would come back to a room that was way too cold for us and we would turn the ac off and open the door to get the room to a more comfortable level.
