Road Trips and Gas Prices

Just got back from a road trip to see family and filled up our Chevy Avalanche (only $80 to fill the tank) Jeesh!

Anyone take any road trips to WDW and notice a huge hit in the total amount paid in gas round trip? Did it end up costing less to fly by air instead. I noticed a lot of airlines have increased overall ticket prices to compensate for the higher prices of petrol.

Were from KC and it always seems the best to fly...

Right now in michigan its about $2.93 ......my car is fairly new so ive got good gas milage......Ive heard that gas will go up to 5 dollars by mid summer......i hope thats not true.HOpefully going to the mouse house in early to mid july....im not a big flier(since 9-11) so thats not a option at the moment.......It takes at least 16-18hrs straight through......the last few times ive drivin to fla its taken at least (not letting it get under a half a tank) 100 one way and 100 the other way (but thats when gas was 2.40 or less).....
Its going to be an interesting summer....

gas prices

 WE drove down from Mich. in Feb. and it was almost double our prices from Feb. last year to drive down and back. I dont like flying, either. Prices here are about $2.95 right now. Its awful. I see all the airlines are raising prices too. some almost double. they are really trying to stop us from visiting our favorite place in the world but we are still planning a trip in Jan. 2007. :sohappy:

I’m driving to WDW from Cleveland in three weeks. When I made my plans back in December I budgeted $3.00/gallon thinking that would be the worst-case scenario and that gas wouldn’t get that high. It looks like by budget will be blown and I haven’t even left yet.

Costs me $150 in gas, $170 in lodging, and about $50 for meals for a round trip drive to WDW ($370 total).

If I flew my family down, it would be at least $1,000-$1200 round trip for all 4 tickets.

I prefer driving anyway, I like having my own vehicle when I'm there.

A road trip is a great way for a family to spend time together on vacation while saving money on airfare. Before you jump in the car however, you need to calculate the expense of your road trip. The only issue is that there are often expenses you are not expecting. For example, you might need a payday loan to cover more gasoline after a road block causes you to go on a massive detour.

Mapquest will give you a gas estimate along with miles and travel time and current driving time according to actual traffic... I think their is a new App called Waze or WAYZ that is popular for keeping in touch with actual travelers in case you are wondering why the traffic has halted in the middle of nowhere land.

When we take road trips we use Gas Buddy to find the cheapest gas along the way. Here in the Memphis area, we can get it for $3.25 right now, so that's not too bad. For a usual trip to WDW using a full size car rental, we spend about $200 round trip.

I am in Woodbridge VA, Just south of @Susan Savia and our prices are $3.45-$3.53. BJ's and Costco are $3.39. I have found a great app for my Iphone called gasbuddy.com. You can search gas price all over by city, state or by zip code. This would help anyone trying to plan on costs for a road trip.

In Indianapolis we have been dealing with 3.89 prices for some time now. We have not seen anything below 3.00 a gallon for years!

My truck or his hummer pass everything but a gas station, so if we don't fly, I always get a mid size rental that gets 30mpg and it takes about $ 120 bucks to land in Orlando with close to a full tank.
Sometimes we stop at PCB for about 36 hours and do some beach time on our way in or out so that adds $300-400 to the road trip
All in all 4-5 people driving in with rental car, side trips, gas, etc runs me $ 500-700 versus $ 1500-1700 flying. And of course when we fly...I still end up rental a car because I have to have my own 4 wheels...
Not sure what the I 10 gas prices are right now, here the cheapest I have seen lately is $ 3.35/gal:arghh:

When I saw the $2 something for gas, I was thinking those were typos. AS @smk said, I haven't seen anything under $3 for years and years. Here in Ohio the price of gas is around $3.50/gal. When we drove to WDW, the price was cheaper to drive than fly especially if you have to pay for luggage. I know through Kentucky and Tennessee the price of gas is usually cheaper than Ohio but when you hit Georgia the price goes back up to Ohio prices and perhaps slighly higher. And Florida price is pretty close to Ohio or at least it was last year.

This year we are flying. We got a good price on flights and luggage is free (Southwest). Since we are heading to the beach for a week after our WDW visit, we got a rental car too. We got pretty good price on rental too.

Good luck on your road trip.

Heading for the great escape.
I drove a round trip from San Francisco, via Lake Tahoe to Vegas and Anaheim and the fuel still cost less than what I pay for my 4 days a week trip to work and back. If you want the freedom to travel you pay the price, a bit like WDW.

We (6 of us) drove down the week before Easter from Philadelphia. Prices at home were $3.45 and we paid as high as $3.79 someplace in Georgia. Pretty pricey!
