Road Trips and Gas Prices

Just got back from a road trip to see family and filled up our Chevy Avalanche (only $80 to fill the tank) Jeesh!

Anyone take any road trips to WDW and notice a huge hit in the total amount paid in gas round trip? Did it end up costing less to fly by air instead. I noticed a lot of airlines have increased overall ticket prices to compensate for the higher prices of petrol.

Were from KC and it always seems the best to fly...

Just today, prices in Indy had drifted down to 3.45 and tonight they are back up to 3.89. Still cheaper for the two of us to drive to Orlando than to fly. Plus, we love the drive and the ability to stop whenever we want, it would not be vacation to WDW if we did not drive! Now, with the room discounts we may be going in the fall after all!!!

Yeah in Mass prices are 3.60's when we drove down in Jan.. I can't tell you how excited I was when I saw gas under $3.00. I rarely paid over that on the round trip so it was cheaper to drive than fly for us

Gas in hcicago has been just over $4 for a few weeks, finally it's come down ad is about $3.89 right now...crazy...

With that said however, te more south you drive, the cheaper the gas! Our road trip to wdw last Nov, once we got to Georgia and Florida gas was almost a whole dollar cheaper!!! It costs us $450 round trip for gas for the trip. But I guess that's good compared to the $1200 it would have cost us to fly at that time!

8 year old thread..wow. I'm glad we never made it to $5 a gallon, though it seems they say gas will be $5 in summer every year.

It's almost always cheaper to drive than fly is it not? Especially a family of four.

I'm spoiled living near SC, it's $3.34. A few months ago it was under $2.99 but only a couple weeks

So jealous! Gas here in IL is always expensive! I don't think I have seen prices like that for at least a year or more :( it's stupid...it honestly is...not to get political, but it's all just insane profit for no good reason other than that...it's all about greed...

"Damn the man, save the Empire!"

With that said, this year we are going to fly! It'll be my kids first time on an airplane! How exciting yet scary all at the same time! I pray that they r good! LOL but honestly we have driven every year, for the last 6 years and we r kinda sick of driving...

I priced things out and for us to drive it would have saved us a couple of hundred bucks at the most. This included estimated fuel round trip and a hotel stay for one night each way since there is no way we would make it without doing the nightly stop.

Definitely not worth it to us when I can just fly for about $300 more(at the most) and be there in about 2.5 hours. And not have to worry about driving 1200 miles each way, having to listen to the "are we there yet", the complaining, the "I'm hungry", "I have to pee", etc.

It saves me 4 total vacation days since I won't be spending those driving back and forth as well.

I have driven for 3 years straight (5 times total) and found it much cheaper than flying with a family of 4 (especially now since we have to pay for our 2 year old). We have a timeshare at Wyndham Bonnett creek and we usually stay for a couple weeks. I have a F150 that cost about 100-125 to fill up (36 gallon tank) and i can make it from Detroit to Orlando on 2 tanks. So 500.00 for gas (we have family in Atlanta as a stopping point) vs. 1200.00 for plane tix and another 500-800 for a rental car. Huge savings for us.
