Does anyone know if they are ever going to re open river country at Ft Wildnerness? It was a great place and so much better because it used all the Bay lake water. Recently while at Disney passing by on the boat to magic kingdom you could see river country it looks all in place just not being used.

There has been many threads about River Country on here. Basically the consensous is it probably wont open again. It had too small a capacity compared with the new water parks and some people say it was breaking H&S rules by using fresh water from the lake.

Welcome aboard Josh! The Bay Lake water is the main reason that River Country closed and remains closed. In brief, there is a nasty amoeba in Florida lake water that can cause brain infections that are nearly always fatal. Disney didn't want to take the chance of this happening, and didn't want to spend the money to adequately treat the water.

There are a number of other reasons. If you use the search feature, there are quite a few threads about this, some of them including fairly recent pictures of River County.

I hope you enjoy it here.

My fam would always stay at FW growing up so we took several trips to River Country. Last year the wife and I rented a sea racer a got as close as we could to take a look. It's pretty sad the condition that it is in. It looks like something off of that show "Life After People" on the history channel.

If you look closely, its not a place you'd ever want to visit again.

According to Eddie Sotto, River Country was closed because the other 2 water parks were enough and they couldnt fill up River Country.

There are many posts on here about river country...
basically it would be wonderful if it were to re-open, but it never will. I am surprised that it has not been demolished yet. It is in horribly bad shape.

In its time it was an great place to have fun and cool off on a hot summer day. The Tom Sawyer feel and typical disney design gave it a natural feel that was very special.

It was closed right before 9/11 for refurbishment and never re-opened. The refurb was put on hold and never happened after attendance went down and it was decided it wasn't worth the $$ and return on investment.

Over the years it had been plagued by problems with the often contaminated natural lake water. Microorganisms were making people sick. The other two water parks beat it out in size and scope. Parking was an issue because visitors not staying at Fort Wilderness had to use the overflow lot which is often full anyway.

You can see some photos of its current state at the disney pix website link:

they were shot in 2005 and the condition has deteriorated even more since then. Very sad. It was such a fun place.

There are always rumors of its reopening.

When I worked on Bay Lake I was always told by co-workers that River Country was being looked at again.

I don't believe it will ever open again or exist in its former glory.

Like others have said, there is no way Disney will waste a ton of money to get this park running again, now that they have two bigger, better (I did love RC) waterparks. Very sad though

Part of the reason but not nearly the main reason. The main reason RC closed was because there are two oter modern water parks and RC was no longer needed.

No, the place is haunted these days....

Although I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Disney open a new waterpark themed like River Cuuntry and call it River Country. 2 parks are WAY too crowded for my liking.

It also didn't help that parking was alllll the way out by the kennels and then the guests had to be bussed in.
