Reminds me of the Nat Geo series "Aftermath: Population Zero"

I remember going to River Country as a very young child and watching my dad come flying down those slides. :)

Wow! I had just rode by there 3 weeks ago and only was able to see a bit of the remains that were visible over the tree lines (yes I got a few photos).
Honestly its kind of sad and a bit odd that the Mouse would just let something rot like that. You would think they would have brought in a demo crew to clean up the mess.
I'm also surprised the poster of these great pics wasnt caught wondering around, I would assume the Mouse doesn't look highly on nosey adventurers.

Nice pictures...thanks for sharing!

I went there once but I don't remember much.

What I don't get is why are they keeping this bone yard if they're not planning to do anything with it??
Why don't they demolish it?

Demo costs money.

Letting something fall apart in an underused corner of the world, behind a screen of trees, when you have land out the yin-yang, is free.

I never saw River Country when it was open, so I don't feel any nostalgia for the place, so this is more interesting to me than sad

I'm not big on water parks, I've never been to TL or BB, but I visited RC once in '99 on senior week with friends when we stayed in the FW campgrounds.

I have a fear of swimming in water where I can't see my feet and if I remember correctly, the water was murky and the bottom was sandy which I was NOT ok with. I hung on the beach while my friends swam.

It had a creepy vibe to me back then so it's even creepier to see it like that now. Thanks for the cool find.

I went to River Country several times as a kid ... It's a little shocking that they would let this just sit around and rot, but to Daves point, demolition does cost money, and with it being on the water, I am sure their are additional concerns about pieces of the demo ending up in the lake.

Amazing photos...and very recent...someone was clever enough to get back in there somehow.

It really is quite sad..Ive always said they could wall off the lakewater and treat all the water in the park. Just is just too costly to re open the place.
And it would never work...parking alone would be a nightmare. If it were opened for FW guests only no one would go to the other pools.

Just sad to see it run down so badly and neglected.

Its just like that show "Life after people"...literally.

Its sad to see it look so .....lonely.

Ill tell you what tho, I want that big water wheel, it would look great in my yard! lol

I read the thread and someone said:
Anyone hear anything about Disney tearing it down? Tigg was saying she heard they might tear it down and build DVC camp sites in that area

UGH DVC DVC, can we ever get enough?

I went to River Country when I was about 12 or 13...I'm 45 now! I lived in Sarasota Florida at the time and my friends parents loaded all us kids up in the BACK of a pick up truck and drove us there for the day....this was back when it wasn't such a big deal to have kids ride in the bed of a pick up! I guess it was about a 2 hr drive up there from Sarasota, glad I had a chance to go there "back in the day"...

Not that I would ever attempt to go to River Country or anything :lookaroun, but out of curiosity, how would one even get in there nowadays? How much security is in the area? What would happen to someone caught snooping around? :lookaroun

My wife and I were walking on a trail from Wilderness Lodge to Ft Wilderness when we stayed at WL this past summer, and we must've missed a turn or something because I'm pretty sure we hit a fence and saw a few old buildings... and we were pretty confident it was the old River Country.
