Rides Unsuitable for 9-Year Old?

My 9-year old son is fairly adventurous (rides "The Viper" roller coaster at Six Flags).

Which rides, if any, could be too intense for him? I'm particularily concerned about Mission Space, Tower of Terror, Rock and Rollercoaster and Space Mountain.

On the same subject, which are the rides that people have died on and what were the circumstances? I'm guessing that all of these poor souls either had health conditions or were too large/small or something like that, but I'd be interested in knowing anyways.

Thanks,

Chuck

Well, if he can handle big coasters than you shouldn't have too much to worry about. They only thing I can think of would be Mission:Space but that is merely G-forces. As with most Disney attractions he won't be able to see the track. DOn't know if that will be an issue or not but everything is pretty tame for a semi-adventurous 9-year-old.

The only one I would worry about would be Mission Space, not because of the incidents on the ride, (because I chose to ride them after people had died on them), but because it is a very nausea inducing kind of ride. Yeah, there are like 50 warnings posted to tell you that you will probably feel a little nauseous after riding, but I did it anyway:lol::drevil:

As I understand, the majority of the incidents of people dying on rides, those people have typically had previous, but unknown, medical conditions

Now, now. Don't get new guests all worried. Those people that died "after" M:S had previous conditions. No one has died on Mission:Space.

From the recent RNR incident:
"(Friday, June 30, 2006) - The 12-year-old boy who died after riding the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Disney's MGM Studios theme park on Thursday had congenital heart abnormalities, according to the medical examiner. An autopsy revealed no evidence that the boy had suffered any injury. The medical examiner's office continues its investigation into the boy's death. Disney officials reopened the ride after an inspectors determined that the ride was operating properly."

From the M:S incidents:
"Within the past year, two people died shortly after riding Mission: Space. On June 13, 2005, Daudi Bamuwamye, 4, died after going on the ride. An autopsy found he had a pre-existing heart condition.

On April 12, 2006, a 49-year-old woman visiting from Germany died one day after riding Mission: Space. Preliminary findings indicate she had a history of high blood pressure and suffered a stroke."

But there is a "tame" version of Mission:Space in case you are worried about anything.

I would buy the Travel Guides (Birnbaum) and let the kids go through to see what they wanted to ride then we went through to see if we felt what they wanted was good for them. The only problem we had was when they first opened Splash they didn't have the height restriction in print. So when we got there, one cast member said she was tall enough while the one nearest the ride told us no.

I have a pretty adventurous 9 yo as wel.........

He loves RNRRC.....but didn't want to go on 2 times in a row....... But will go on multiple times during a trip.
He is afraid of ToT....but more of the themeing.....I went on and it wasn't that bad, quite fun.
Loves Space M....would go on forever if I let him!
BTMountain was enjoyed.
EE wasn't open our last trip
Dinosaur was way too intense for him....but that was 2 yrs ago, and he won't try it again! :lookaroun
Primevial Whirl just made him laugh and scream, made me dizzy after our third ride I couldn't do any more.....
Test Track is a big hit, he goes on multiple times.
He loved Soarin!
Mission Space....one of his favorites. I was the one feeling a little dizzy after our third ride, not him. Make sure you play some of the activities in the control center after the ride.

Hope you have a great trip!

If he's adventurous, then I honestly can't think of any rides that would faze him. Several people have mentioned Mission Space, but if he isn't prone to motions sickness, he should be fine.

what rides he can go on really depend on him how tall he is and what he likes. my son is 8 and a little on the small size. so he couldn't go on some rides but he did go on all the ones he could and loved it. with the exception of Mission Space. my sister in law and brother when on with there kids and they were all sick the rest of the day it ruined there day. so i would avoid it if possible or make it your last stop before you go back to the hotel

when we went we did them all... my youngest was 6, and handled every ride NO PROBLEM... the exception was rockin roller coster... (she was too small).
If your son has handled huge rollercosters.. you have nothing to worry about.

The only thing about mission space you need to remember, is listen to what they tell you to do. (Keep your eyes on the screen, don't turn your head, etc.) IT was a blast! good luck:wave:

I have rode MS both ways, personally, I prefered the green line simply because I can not handle rides that go in a circle :hurl: . If your son rode the Viper and liked it, he will love RnRC. ToT all depends on how he likes "drops". The green line on MS is better than I thought, no major g-force and you loose the weightlessness feeling, but still a good ride, at 9, he would probably just be amazed at the themeing, especially inside the ride itself.
Others are right about Dinosaur, motion wise it is fine, but it is very loud and some of the dinasoaurs are intense. It all depends on your son!!!

I think if he can handle an intense rollercoaster, then he handle just about every thing at wdw. Although M:S is a whole different beast, you have to make sure that he doesn't get motion sickness. Also on ToT some people just don't enjoy the feeling of freefall. Other than that, I think he can probably handle anything in wdw.

No one has died on Disney property :animwink:

No one has been pronounced dead on Disney property. I believe this is a legal definition that can only be given by someone certified by the state to do so.(medical examiner, coroner, etc unless under a physician's care, either at home or in a medical facility, then an attending doctor can do it) Paramedics and other health care professionals in most US states are not allowed to declare someone dead, even if it's pretty obvious. (I think they can do it if there is absolutely NO possibility that the person is living, ie the head is detached or completely crushed, but it may be that the medical examiner still has to sign the paperwork...they just aren't obligated to treat that person) Sorry for TMI, but that old rumor that WDW hustles people off so they won't "die" at WDW just isn't true.

By the time my daughter was 9, she could happily ride any and everything at WDW. If your son loves roller coasters, he should have fun on all of the things you mentioned.

I wouldn't be worried at all about Space Mountain or Rock n' Roller Coaster, especially because it seems like he's a roller coaster "guy." If he can follow directions, Mission: Space should be fine. The only people who don't enjoy Mission: Space are ones who don't follow the regulations (in the pre-show), have medical problems, or a history of indifference to G-Forces (like old people). If you're too worried about the G-Forces, ride with him on the less intense Mission: Space.

The only ones I would be worried about are Tower of Terror and Dinosaur. Not because they are the most the most thrilling rides (though ToT is up there), but the themeing is very scary, so make sure he knows about the scariness, (especially on Dinosaur, because nothing about the pre-show indicates the scariness inside.

All in all, just have fun. If he ends up riding something he doesn't likes, just take him on a ride he does, and he'll forget all about it.

I am a 52 year old father of a 9 year old daughter that handles all the rides in every WDW park with ease. Some that leave me a litle queasy for a few minutes don't seem to bother her or my wife at all.

One thing we have noticed about the Disney attractions are they certainly seem to be geared more to family participation and don't have the intense speed and jerky movements that you typically find in some of the other parks.

We visited Universal Orlando during Spring Break this year and found the rides at Islands of Adventure to be much more intense. Rides of this sort may be more suitable for teens with iron clad stomachs.

Disney by far has the best ride values for families and your 9 year old should be able to handle all of them just fine.
