Ride props

What happens to the props/equipment from past rides? I remember they used to have a "graveyard" way back when, but what happens now? For example- what happened to Jaws, the boats, the houses, the uniforms? I would love to own a piece of memorbilia like that!

That's a good question. Some of it gets stored away and re-purposed elsewhere (such as props for HHN haunted houses; remember that blue police car from Kongfrontation?). Some of it gets destroyed in the demolition (there are pictures of the Jaws boats remaining on the track during demo, and at least one of them falling over onto its side) or otherwise trashed.

I'm more curious about the stuff that actually goes home with people. For example, for a lot of Disney related stuff (props, costumes, ride vehicles), Mouse Surplus in Orlando used to have a warehouse filled with tons of stuff, and one could spend a day hunting through it all.

Times have changed, and we live in a day of anticipated sentimental value. People actually think about preservation nowadays, and the topic is even featured in tv shows like Hollywood Treasure and other pawn/picker type programs.

I don't know for sure what has happened to the props/vehicles in the more recently closed attractions like Jaws. I would like to think that efforts were made to preserve at least some parts of it. But if you watched the rapid progress of the demolition, it appeared as though Universal's priority was time, and not preservation, and there were at least some things destroyed in the demo that I would like to have seen preserved, and even sold or auctioned off. They kept security pretty tight, and even monitored the massive trash dumpsters to make sure team members weren't walking away with their own attraction mementos.

At the end of the day, the whole thing is really quite sad. :(

I always wanted a Pepsi perfect bottle from bttf the ride.... They were different to the movie ones in that they were brown coloured plastic where as the movie ones were clear with cola coloured liquid added to them.

My search continues

Never really understood that. Why is it so much better for it to be trashed and destroyed than to be in the possession of someone who cares?

I know... :( If people are going to profit, why not let Universal be the one to profit? I don't understand why they would not try to do something with the leftover materials, or at least consign with a third party and allow them an opportunity to go through and salvage some stuff.

The trick is to get the garbage at the other end of the process, once it's left Universal (unless their garbage vendor entered into some kind of special agreement to demolish everything and not allow any of it to be salvaged, either for profit or for free).

If anything, the whole idea of "reuse, renew, recycle" fits in perfectly with the whole "Universal is Green" campaign. Oh well.

The last time I was Uni, we were walking through the New York streets very early in the morning, which was pretty much deserted.
My spouse tried a door, just for the hell of it, and it opened, revealing all the big props from the old Hanna Barbara attraction.
It was surreal.

Could you elaborate? Which building exactly was this? I know the center buildings (formerly used as space for HHN houses, the ones directly next to what is now Transformers) have been used for storage before.

I suppose I'll ask this here while we're on the subject. Memorial Day weekend last year I was taking a stroll through NY on a very windy day, walking along the soon-to-be demolished SS44 when I noticed something odd. A window on the top "floor" of the central building I just described was open (they are usually all closed), and the wind was swaying the curtains just enough for me to peer inside from the ground level.

I was quite disturbed to see what appeared to be an enormous, cartoonish eye! The closest thing I can compare it to is the eye of say Gargamel from The Smurfs cartoon. I to this day have no idea what the hell I was looking at... if it was an old ride prop, an HHN artifact, or something else entirely. For all I know it only looked like an eye and was something else entirely. I tried to get a picture but I only had my iPhone at the time and couldn't manage to get a clear/discernable shot.

I don't suppose anyone could shed any light on this? It's been nagging me since.

This was a while back...maybe 2005? I want to say it was one of those facades with a "downstairs". We went down to the "basement door" I remember we tried the door...just because... and were really surprised when it actually opened. The first thing I saw were fiberglass pterodactyls from the Flintstones.
I'm guessing that the door doesn't usually open...but it was really early in the morning, and there wasn't a soul around!

I wish we had taken pictures...but that was the day we wanted to ride all the big things, and didn't want to bring a camera.

Hello, from what you describe it sounds like that giant eye you saw could be in fact the giant eye used in "What Would You Do" which was filmed at Nickelodeon Studios. Nickelodeon Studios closed in April 30th, 2005 but that particular show was cancelled in 1993. I collect stage props and memorabilia from Nickelodeon Studios. I have been on a mission to locate many of the old props that were used on set for years now.

I happened to stumble across this thread by accident while searching for "old universal studios props" on google. I would be curious to know more about what you saw and how you accessed that point, my theory is you were at the storage which was located at the rear entrance where Nickelodeon Studios once was. The HB ride was sold off to various Paramount Parks until their license expired so two thoughts to ponder would be:

1. Off-topic, but where are the simulator/set structure(s) now from the HB ride?

2. It is possible that what you saw was indeed related to HB when housed at Universal Studios and they were props used in the exterior, queue, or shop at end of attraction.

What are your thoughts? I would like to continue this thread. I will continue to browse this site for related topics. Thanks!

It was not located in any of the former Nick Studios facilities proper, but rather in one of the upper floors of the central NY facades that combine to make up Sting Alley, Starbucks, and Ben & Jerry's (specifically, the facade closest to the "smoking park" area). If I'm not mistaken, it was the window on the top floor on the corner directly above the new Film Vault store (previously the Delancey Preview Center).

I'll look up the prop and get back to you if it resembled what I saw.

Did you get a chance to take a look and view the prop that I was describing it to be?

There is a lot of speculation to what you saw...

It may have nothing to do with either HB or Nickelodeon Studios, the interesting thing is the park can be housing many props in the most unusual of places simply for storage purposes. I can't imagine why they would be holding onto the "eye" from the What Would You Do? set but anything is possible.

Interestingly off-topic to what we have been discussing but in vein to this original post; I heard that the cast members of Jaws received certain props to take home after the ride closed. The original Jaws' shark teeth have been ebayed along with the original training manual several times over. It's a daily hunt but it eventually pays off, I have found some interesting but pricey props on eBay including this one:

Unforutnately, for that price, the dino tongue is not even similar to the screen-used dino. From the item description:

"This foam-filled Tyrannosaurus was created for paint reference during the ride's early production and measures roughly 37" tall, 30" deep, 14" wide. It's too large to ship by conventional means - we're using eBay's system to list it for freight delivery, but feel free to contact us to discuss further crating and freight options. Local pick-up is always encouraged at our new store location in Burbank!"
