Ride Opinion: Journey into Imagination

Each time I've been through this attraction, it's been different. The first time was with Figment and the DreamFinder, the second was the updated version from a few years ago (Dr. Nigel Channing and NO Figment), and now within the past year or so they've updated it yet again, bringing back Figment. I never thought of this attraction as anything spectacular, but still would always take it in. I haven't been on it since Figment was brought back into the show, but have downloaded a video of the ride and it looks interesting again. I'm looking forward to seeing it in September. Anyone like it better now?

I like the new version better than the first Nigel Channing version, but I'm not sure if I like it better than the original. I think I would say they're about equal. I like the theming and many of the effects are good. All in all, I would say it's a cute ride and came off well done.

Not really. The original ride was by far the best, and even though no one liked the sparse and scaled-back Nigel Channing, I personally think the current Figment retrofit is even worse. Sure, it has Figment again and the pavillion's themesong is back, but not only is it as sterile and menacing as the original ride, it now feels cheap and cluttered. Besides, what's the point in shoehorning Figment into a ride that is so totally devoid of the child-like innocence he was supposed to represent? It makes as much sense as installing Chairman Clench animatronics in Splash Mountain. Guests who never rode the original attraction will have no idea why there's a chipper, singing dragon guiding them through the abstract and mostly-black experiment rooms, and guests who remember the original ride are only going to be reminded of how vastly superior the original attraction was.
Sure, the new ride does have a few neat special effects like the butterly cage, inverted house, and the train sound, but that's really all it is: a handful of assorted parlor tricks Imagineering had come up with over the years loosely strung together by a thin premise of some kind of sinister laboratory experiment. It somehow manages to be at the same time less ambitious and less focused than the original concept. Rather than look at the different capacities of imagination as the original did, it reduces the role of imagination to little more than the possible by-product of sensory perception, ignoring the importance of creativity after inspiration. Of course, that makes sense, as creativity was obviously what Imagineering lacked when they designed this neon nightmare.

Although the original is the best of all of them, the 2nd one really wasn't as bad as everyone was saying it was. I went into it without an open mind and I didn't enjoy it. The second time I went into it, I thought it was pretty cool. I haven't been into the new one yet, but I hear it's better than the last one, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

I totally agree...the first one was the absolute best!!!! Dreamfinder was a great part of the ride! The second one was awful and the newest one is ok.....at least Figment is back

I love Figment! Journey into Imagination is a must "do", and I would recomend it to anybody. I can't really remember the old one, but this one seems awesome.

Just "Imagine" What Could Happen

Just be glad some kind of Imagination ride is still there at Epcot.

Don't let me remind you of what happened to the World Of Motion by GM and Horizons by GE.

By the time people read this message Spaceship Earth by AT&T will reach its demise.

This version I like better than the last version. Figment should never have been taken out in the first place. But nothing compares to the original. It's a shame they felt they needed to tinker with it.

Personally, I liked the new ride. Certainly it is better than #2!!! But to REALLY get it right, a combo of #1 and #3 would be the best!!!! I like Figment but would like a little more of the song to accompany the ride.

I really like the old one better. I think everyone pretty much everyone agrees on that. The old one, the way I describe it, was that it was eye candy. There was so much to look at, and you see something new everytime you went on it.

The new one I think is just boring. There's nothing incredible about it. I just look at it as, oh imagineers got the fans mad so they just put in an animatronic figment were they could, then they could claim they put him back in. It's a joke.

I think the strength of the original JII, was it's strong set-up, the section of the attraction where Dreamfinder is piloting his balloon, explaining the imagination process, and them introducing Figment. But even back in the original attraction, a large number of people did not make the connection between the set-up and the series of scenes they travelled through later. Many times I overheard other guests not understanding what they were riding through once they left the introduction scene. If you paid attention to everything Dreamfinder said and sang, it made the rest of the attraction quite enjoyable, but if you didn't pay attention, the rest of the attraction seemed like a bunch of ramdom scenes with a purple dragon dressed to fit the scene.

The second version, Journey Into Your Imagination, while a complete departure from the original, DID try to explain what you were about to see in a much easier way. The problem was, they yanked the heart out of the attraction and really dumbed it down. While trying to create an attraction to compliment the Imagination Institutes "HISTA", they p.o'd a lot of loyal JII fans. I personally didn't hate the second version JIYI, but felt cheated, because the heart was gone. Maybe if we'd never seen the original, this second version wouldn't have come off as such a stinker.

The lastest version definately adds a little more charm to the last version. Figment's presence adds a little bit of his mischivousness back into the ride and in a sense, brings back alot of the old memories. It's a much better attraction than version 2, but it will never replace the original.

By the way, my daughters (now 10 and 13) still remember the original. That says alot for it.

I think the original was definetly better. Dreamfinder was the best, I felt very Jules Vern like. Not knowing that there would be dark places and air blowing into your face, I took my 5 year old on the new ride, she started screaming. It was the first ride we went on and she had just woken up from a nap. I would of liked a warning. Thinking it was Figment, I thought it would be relaxing, more like the first one, and playful, not so noisy. Never the less, she liked Spaceship Earth better. Hopefully she'll give it a try when we go back in a few days.

I never considered myself to be that big a fan of the original ride. It was whimsical and very entertaining, but not as educational and thought-provoking as some of the other Epcot pavilions. (Sorry to those who disagree, but I always enjoyed the fact that a vacation could be educational and inspiring, in addition to just having a good time.)

But when I saw the latest version last summer, I realized how much I missed the original! The story seems kind of weak and contrived, and I'm not sure that I agree with the idea that the five senses somehow equal imagination. Also, the decoration / theming seems like it was really done on the cheap - it seems very sterile, without the elaborateness (I don't know if that's a word or not) and attention to detail that we usually get from the Imagineers. Finally, the ride seems like it is far shorter than it used to be. Overall, I didn't *hate* it, but it did seem to be a great disappointment.

I never saw the second version, but since general consensus seem to be that the latest is an improvement, I guess I'm glad that I never got the opportunity!

I liked the original also but I am one for change. So when the second one was added I HATED it!!! It just wasnt' the same without old figment, yet, because he appeared in one little spot at the end they still had the nerve to sell figment souveigners! When they brought out the third version with figment in it, I loved it again. It was different, funny and even though dreamfinder is missing it was very enjoyable. I just hated the second one, the other two were great!:sohappy:

As most people, I loved the original ride. I grew up with Figment in that ride. Once I became older, I kind of leaned towards having a change. After seeing what a change meant (Nigel Chaning/No Figment), I wanted the old ride back. The new version is definently better than #2, but it's still not the original.

I've only seen the first and second versions, but next week I'll see the third. As you can probably tell from my name, I'm a big Figment fan. When I visited the park a few years ago they closed the Figment ride just before I got there. I stood outside the building literally crying...I mean there were buckets of tears coming out. A couple of CM's tried to comfort me, to no avail. They told me that there was a possibility of a Figment-free ride coming in and I just cried even more! I was about, oh, 20 years old when this happened. I just LOVED that ride! Then last year I saw version 2 of this ride. I went on it ONE time. I could not tolerate a second going of it. I use to ride the first version 15 times in a row...I just never got off! But the second version was pathetic...even Michael Eisner has said he didn't like it. I've been told Figment is now back for the third ride, but in a role rather limited to a marketing gimick to get people to buy stuff at the store at the end of the ride (which, of course, I will) . I just hope there's a little something there that's nostalgic of the original ride, but I'm not holding my breath.

I still can't believe Disney auctioned off the Dreamfinder on his balloon. It was on disneyauctions.com about a year ago. I don't know if it sold, though. It had a cheap opening price of something like $1000, but shipping on it was $10,000 - 25,000 depending on what area of the country it was being shipped to. Oddly, the $25,000 was for EAST coast and $10,000 for West coast. I guess they shipped it to Cali after they destroyed the ride...go figure!

While the original w/ Dreamfinder was by far the definitive version of the ride, the current version is the next best thing to not having Figment at all. I also love all the little "in jokes" they put into the new version, "Dean Finder" on a door at the beginning of the ride for example.
