Ride malfunction trend??

It sure seems like I've been reading in a lot of forums lately about rides breaking down. I've been to WDW & DL numerous times, and don't ever remember that being a problem. Have I just been lucky? Why are all these malfunctions happening?

Rides break down, that's just how it is. I'm sure there were a few malfunctions on your trip that you may have missed. Disney do well maintaining rides so they can continue to run, unfortunately this does not always mean they stay in their original state (e.g. Dinosaur and Everest).

Oh, I'm sure you are right. There were probably rides that broke down many times on my visits, it just seems like people are complaining and being a lot more vocal about it recently. This just makes me worry about future trips.

I don't know that on a whole there are more breakdowns. I think part of it is the fact that more and more people have constant internet connectivity through smart phones, made even easier through free wi-fi in the parks. That means it's easier than ever to make a real time update.

Remember too that not every time a ride goes down is it broken. Plenty of ride stops are caused by guest action, not a malfunction.

This is pretty much it. It is hard to tell if there are more, less or the same breakdowns than in the past, but the one thing that is for sure is that the reporting of them has increased.

From my own personal anecdotal experience I think it is about the same and not overly frequent. In 15 years worth of 10+/- trips per year I have been evacuated of an attraction exactly once and I might experience 1 maybe or 2 temporary ride stoppages (which can be for many reasons other than an attraction break down) per trip.

I also think some people may mistake omnimovers stopping as 'breaking down'... however they may be stopped to let a disabled person on/off or for some other reason other than ride malfunction. It happened to be on the ride in the Mexican pavillion at Epcot (sorry, name totally eludes me right now, lol) and our boat just sat there for a good five minutes- but I could see the CMs unloading a wheelchair from a boat a few ahead of ours.

Same for the awful Maelstrom- that was the only time I was truly ed we were stopped and couldn't get off immediately. And the only time I considered leaving the ride vehicle (in this case, boat) and walking through scenery to exit the ride. My allergies were going crazy in there. It was so warm and...moist. Gross.

In each of my trips I've experienced very few ride breakdowns. If they did happen, I can't remember having to be removed from a ride, none of them were them shut down for long or hppened park wide. I figure it's bound to happen somewhere, sometime because of the huge number of hours of rider use and I just happened along at that time. It was a minor inconvenience and surely didnt affect my trip enough to post hate mail about Disney.

Well take into account just the incredible and massive undertaking of day-to-day operations of something like WDW. Rides are just insanely complex and therefore alot of things could malfunction and go wrong. And add in the shear mass flow of guests, hours of operation, and the fatigue all that causes on the machinery. Something is gonna mess up at some point. It is a given. It's impressive that things don't go even more wonky or end up being more of an intrusion then they do.

When you are riding the Haunted House ride. When it stops in the middle that is not a breakdown. They have to stop the ride to put on disabled riders. Those that can not walk into the doommobile. It is that way with all the rides that are in constant motion. Buss Light year, Spaceship Earth, The Seas and the new Mermaid are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

When I've been on rides and it stops, I'm never certain whether it's stopping to let less-abled people on or off (usually the case on SSE, HM or TTA), or if it's a genuine malfunction.

Having said that, I did get stuck on POTC for what seemed like a while (it was probably only 10 minutes, 15 max) on my last trip, and TTA stopped and started three times in quick succession during one ride (typically in the Space Mountain tunnel during the evening, so I couldn't even people watch while I waited).

The only ride at Disney that I have ever noticed repeated breakdowns was for Test Track. I will say that the few times that I have been to Universal, the breakdowns are constant. No matter how simple the ride, it will break down while I am standing in line.

I've been on rides when they stopped briefly at WDW, but never evacuated. On the other hand, I've evacuated off 3 different rides at Universal - Cat in the Hat, The Mummy, & Jurasic River Adventure. (The River Adventure one really sucked. We were stuck in the boat right before the drop for 45 minutes. They finally got us off of it & we had a 5-6 flights of stairs to climb down.)
