Ride fear :(

Hi Everybody,

This is my first post here at WDWMagic so I hope it's in the correct area. I will be going to Disney next summer (so excited!), and would looooooove to ride the rides there. However, I am emetophobic (afraid of throwing up), and this is what has limited me from the rides I ride in the past, because I'm afraid that they'll make me sick.

Have any of you ever gotten sick from Disney rides? If so, which ones? Any recommendations on how not to get sick on rides? I'd love to do rides but my fear has kept me off of them so many times in the past. This may be my last time visiting Disney as a "kid," so I'd really love to get to have the full experience.

Thank you so much!

Unless you have an especially irritable tummy, I don't think you're in any real danger of losing your breakfast on a Disney ride. Mission: SPACE is the only one that comes to mind, not because I've ever felt nauseous on it but I've heard stories of other people having that problem...and they have a non-spinning version of that one. :)

Hi,

My wife gets motion sickness so she has a few no no rides. She can not do the Tea Cups, Mission Space, any of the circle vision movies and Expedition Everest.

Much of it is she also thinks she will be sick so basically focuses on that and then gets sick. She used to do the same thing with flying. She got sick on a flight and then was convinced she would get sick whenever flying and got sick on every flight after that for a while. Somehow on one flight she was able to believe she was not definitely going to get sick and she didn't. She has not gotten sick on any flights since.

I know it is not easy but if you do get sick don't convince yourself every ride will make you sick.

I hope it all works out and you enjoy it.

I'd definitely stay away from the intense version of Mission:Space. I know some people used to get sick on Star Tours, and the old version was pretty tame. Might wanna check back about the new version before you go (if its open). Rock N' Roller Coaster is the only ride on the property that turns you upside down. It's a pretty smooth ride though so I guess like with any ride, it really all depends on how susceptible you are to motion sickness.

I cannot do anything that spins or drops (like tea cups and Tower of Terror). Movies that simulate flying cause vertigo for me, but I have no problems on any other ride. Normally I get sick on boats, but the Disney boats cause me no problems whatsoever. Because I have an inner ear problem I use OTC meclazine...also known as Bonnine (Brand name Antivert is a prescription), you may want to give that a try (get the low dose 12.5mg or you may sleep through WDW). You can also try a natural way in taking ginger root capsules (start a few days before as it needs to build up in your system), my girls use that when flying and it really helps with the nausea.

Vomiting at Disney occurs WAY more due to diet, energy level, anxiety, and heat rather than the rides themselves.

As others have said, there is one exception, and that is Mission:Space. There is an Orange (Full Experience) and Green (No Simulated G-forces, thus no spinning) version. Green is the way to go if you're unsure.

Plus there's that damn chili dog breath in Stitch that'll makes me want to vomit... or is it the attraction itself. Hard to say...

Welcome to the boards!

If you are worried about getting sick on rides, then I would do a few things to prevent it:
1. Eat lightly. No heavy, greasy foods.
2. Stay hydrated.
3. Carry some peppermint candies with you.

At one point I had a type of vertigo which would lead to extreme nausea and make me want to vomit.

I did have an attack while at WDW and these rides were the ones that did it to me.
Space Mountain
Dinosaur
Teacups
Mission space Orange (but not the green version!)
Star Tours
Soarin'

I didn't actually throw up while on any of these (Thankfully!!)...but felt pretty rotten for a while afterwords.

None of the other roller coasters or circle vision films did it to me...only the really jarring or intense rides, and simulators.

Note...I didn't ride Expedition Everest on that trip...but I imagine it probably would have made me queasy as well...the backwards motion would do it to me!

Oddly...the sickest I felt the whole trip (and some subsequent trips as well!)was after riding the WDW bus!

Unless you have motion sickness, I don't think you should have any problem on any ride. As long as you're not already feeling ill for some other reason, and even if you are, your chances are still fairly small, you should have no trouble.

The only time I have ever felt sick (but I never actually threw up) was when I made the tea cups turn way to quickly. Other than that, I have never even felt sick on any ride.

If you do throw up easily though, eat a banana periodically. They taste the same coming up as they do going down.

The first ride MY DS, then age 7, ever rode at WDW was Mission Space. At that time they only had the extreme version. It was not a good time with Dad trying to hold the barf bag in front of DS’ mouth.
On subsequent trips he has gotten bolder and bolder, last visit he parasailed and was totally bummed that Space Mountain was closed.
On our family Grand Gathering a few years ago my niece wanted to ride test track but chickened out 3 times. Her mother and father refused to wait in line again so she asked if she could try again with DS and me. I told her “don’t let fear control you and you will be fine.” As the ride started she dug her nails into my arm, but by the end she had her arms in to air and was laughing with joy. DS and niece rode it three more times together.
My advice is take it slow; try something easy like the Barnstormer and go from there, as suggested by others Dramamine will help as well. The main thing is to enjoy and “don’t let fear control you and you will be fine.”

This is so true! I also suffer from horrible motion sickness. Throw me in the backseat of a nice quiet beautifully suspensioned car and I will loose it all. As a child my family never took a vacation that did not entail my Mother getting together my "sickness" bag. (plastic bags, dry crackers, ginger ale and a pack of diaper wipes) No one wanted to sit next to me in the car because they all knew it was coming.

I have mentally learned to control it over the years. The key first and foremeost.... don't ride anything that spins, it's just a reciepe for diasaster... Don't close your eyes... it just makes it worse. Tell your self your not going to be sick. Take deep breaths and I promise you will get through it. After you have done this a few times it gets easier and easier to control. Trust me I know what you are going through.

I can tell you that I DID ride Mission Space (less intense) this past June and made it through just fine. Soarin was a blast and I took my daugter on the Tea Cups for the first time. Just take it at your own pace you will do fine! :sohappy:

Thank you all so much for your help! I really appreciate it, and the suggestions are great. Now I'm even more excited about Disney because I'm less worried about the rides! Thanks again!
