Resort Prices - Wow

I can honestly say, for the 1st time ever, I'm strongly considering skipping Disney all together in 2011 for another vacation destination. I was looking at the resort prices for 2010, and Disney is getting nuts. $365 for the Poly during value season. Over $200 for a moderate during the summer. Nearly $150 for a Value during the summer.

We always get either a AAA rate or an AP rate, but if the time comes when neother are available, that'll be it for a while. Having stayed at the Poly before, I think Disney is out of their mind charging upwards of $400 per night. Then again, a lot of people stay there, so maybe it's just me.

the free dining (that I never use) is making dining less enjoyable.

Thread drift, but I totally agree with you here. My wife and I are heading down in a few weeks to celebrate our anniversary. We made an attempt about a month ago to find a nice place on property for a nice romantic dinner. Fat chance - the dining plans have everything all booked up. So we'll go off property for our dinner - and probably for a lot of other dining as well.

I remember fondly the days when you could go next to Spaceship Earth to make dinner plans anywhere in the resort. We used to have a discussion shortly after our arrival, go into Epcot and make our dinner plans for the week. We'd leave a few nights open for spontaneity and find something "on the fly" wherever we happened to be. Those days are LONG GONE...

reading this is very interesting to me. I am a college student and I find that the prices are actually a good deal. Im sure that a lot has to do with us going during value season and staying at a value resort. Last year, I stayed in one of the worst off site hotels (we were unaware) and in the end, we paid more with transportation factored in. A lot of people forget that a taxi will run you $20 each way and only the expensive off site hotels have free shuttles. Also, you can not rent a car until you are 25, which is a huge problem for college students. After seeing the Disney bus system, I knew that I would never stay off-site again.

Years ago, I used to get AP rates as low as $49 per night at the Values. Anything under $100, I'm fine with. When you start getting into $130 plus per night there, that's too much.

The real problem as I see it, is the Deluxes. $465 for a standard room at ANY Disney Resort is absurd.

For the younger people, this is nothing new. I do not remember the days when things were actually affordable. I just looked into the deluxe resorts to see if my group could afford to stay 2 of our 10 days there. It was going to add $200-$400 onto everyones bill, which is just not logical. I really hope they come out with some good deals in the future because I'd love to have the opportunity to stay at Poly or Contemp. Oh well, I guess I'll save that money to go a segway tour and maybe DisneyQuest.

and Deluxe is relative ....

One area I did not even discuss in my prior post is what you are actually getting at the 'deluxe' resort at deluxe prices. Don't get me wrong, I love the theming at my preferred resorts, and the atmosphere is still magical to me, however if I'm paying in the $300 - $500 a night range, I admit that I expect an exceptional room. The 'regular' rooms at the deluxe resorts are not exceptional - the common areas come close (and things like the lobby and grounds at AKL may qualify) - but the level of elegance and service are not even close to being on par to what I get at a real 1st class hotel.

Oh, absolutely. It's ALL about location. Disney's Deluxe level rooms are on par I'd say with a decent 2-3 star hotel off site. They're themed much better, but far from "deluxe".

We have already stopped going

We were ging to Disney World 5 or 6 times a year. Staying on property using moderate resorts. AP holders. We were going to go in September, checked prices. Cancelled the trip. We went to the mountains, has as good of time or better for a quarter of the price. It felt good to have a very good dinner and leave the resturant with a 40 dollar bill as well as pay 80 bucks a night for a very nice room with a view that was unbelievable. The marker will correct the greed.

Although we would love to stay at a Deluxe resort like the Polynesian, we've always found their prices to be above our budget.
We like Port Orleans Riverside as a nice compromise between the Deluxe and Value resorts.

We would never consider staying off site.

Does everyone else think (like I do) that these offers of buy 4 get 3 free are adding to the cost of the rooms next year? Makes sense that they must offset the discount somewhere, charge more but still let people think they are getting a good "deal".

Hey that is why it is so important to look for specials and deals. I mean last year Disney had the buy 4 get 3 promotion which makes staying there much more affordable. Then they had dining up until the Holidays which is a pretty good deal. Take advantage look for promotions, go during value season, and make sure you get the dining plan because it's a steal if your going to sit down for two meals a day.

The bad part of having someone on ignore is that when people quote them you can see what they say...

I would like to say that he is the second part that I highlighted..:D

Thing he does not realize is that all these low class people and Wal-mart types he mocks are so much better then he is in every single way.

He has no class, and no respect at all.
I currently have only one person on my "ignore" list and his name will added to it as soon as I post this. If his intentions were to get me upset then today I let him, BUT no more!

well look out for me then buddy. i save all year by GOING to walmart and saving my pennies just so i can stay at the Poly every once in a while. i'm sure you are the type running for cover or cursing under your breath when you see me coming. your attitude stinks.

That's funny. His attitude makes me want to book a room at the Grand Floridian when he's there just so I can invite my entire family to visit. Maybe we can have a combination drinking/belching/cannonball contest at the pool. LOL.

$300 is about the most I'd pay for a deluxe with $350 for a MK view room at GF (if we were celebrating something special) and $250 at WL for anything. Any prices above that and we'd go spend that money somewhere else. With all of the discounts, promotions, offers, etc... I feel like Disney is like those furniture companies that have a sale every week and mark their prices up just so they can then bring them down via the sale. As I've said before, I'm really curious how many people pay full rack without any kind of promotion or discount and how long they stay when residing at a Deluxe. Just seems that Disney is become less and less accesible for the average family.

The state of affairs at WDW increasingly looks like a "the center cannot hold" kind of thing to me. Being a public company, the typical short-term thinking is to keep the shareholders happy, which means maximizing profits. But it really does feel like WDW is about to price themselves out of most peoples' budgets, which can't be good for the stock price, either. 11 years ago, I stayed at a moderate for less than what it now costs to stay at a value. It was a AAA-package deal, not rack rates, but still...

I joined DVC a few years back, and am thankful that I did. And when people complain about why they should join DVC whe there's always another free-dining or pay-4-get-7 promotional offer, I point out that the prices of rooms are not going to get any cheaper. And eventually, even a comparatively "great" deal isn't going to seem as great as DVC. If WDW continues at this rate, within 10-12 years moderates will be at or near 300 a night. And that's not factoring in how much it costs to get into the parks. Snark like LarryStoken aside (which I'm going to go on record as saying is 100% malarkey intended to rile you up and nothing more), it's going to reach a point where a lot of formerly dedicated "Regular" visitors will become more irregular, and the ones that can afford to go more often, quite frankly, have the options to go anywhere, so you can't rely on them going more often.

In a way, perhaps this is intentional. We all now how difficult it can occasionally be to get a room. The overpricing may be a means to prevent people from going as often, so people don't go as often, thereby "freeing" up rooms. If this is the case, I'd argue that WDW still, to a degree, is shooting itself in the foot. A large chunk of their profit seems to come from people (like many of us) who love WDW and go often. Start pricing them out of their ability to do what they love, and they may go on to love something else. Sure, you still have the rest of the world as a potential customer base, many of whom you've outpriced as an option, many others will still look for a value for their dollar...leaving the bourgeois who will dump thousands of dollars into a trip without thinking twice, and may never come back. So aside from the lucky ducks who get PIN codes to return (AND still have the time and money to do so), the sticker-shock of going to WDW is going to outweigh the potential "Magic-ness" of it all very soon. The center can not hold.

Once I looked and placed him there I have three too, one that I have forgotten about and one that I see on a regular basis that I know I ignore.

I think we stopped staying on grounds when we found condos less than 1.5 miles from the main gate for less than $700/week. They're three bedrooms, with a full kitchen and laundry, both of which help cut down on our expenses and how much we end up packing. We have both APs and the Tables in Wonderland card that cuts down on the cost of our WDW meals. It's not the meal plan, but it's still a nice discount and quite frankly the only way we're able to go a couple of times a year....:)
