Resort guests being offered 1 night extension at discounted rate through the new year

Had a few emails telling me this is back in effect again through March 11 at most resorts.
This offers interesting commentary on hotel occupancy. Many of us commented on the rate up above 90% during the last quarterly earnings release, and that's super high. 85% is considered to be about as close to "full occupancy" as you'll get in the industry. It's very difficult for hotels to coordinate the check-in and check-out dates of various guests because they don't always line up end-to-end. This is a smart way to fill unoccupied beds at the last minute if the next surge of check-ins isn't for another day or two. I expect this is most prominent on Friday and Saturday nights. Fill the extra beds in advance of the big check-in days on Saturday and Sunday.

I'm curious if it's guests with a Friday or other relatively "odd" checkout day. Since most reservations are weekend to weekend, my guess would be the discount is being offered to those where that room is going to sit empty a night due to the misalignment of guest schedules.
