Expansion is in your dreams
Just got back from a weeks stay at WDW today. I am happy to report that the bus system is working very well. So well, in fact, that I think that any monorail expansion is dead. About 0915 hours on 02/04/2002, I was at Epcot and intended to take the monorail to the MK. As I walked up the ramp a CM walked down to me and said, "Are you going to the Magic Kingdom?" I nodded yes and the CM said, "The monorail is broken." He then directed me to a waiting bus. The bus marquee said, "Magic Kingdom". I got on the bus and asked the driver, "Are you going to the Magic Kingdom or the Ticket & Transportation Center?". He said he was going to the TTC. I announced to the crowd on the bus, "This bus is going to the Ticket & Transportation Center, not the Magic Kingdom!". With that, about 35 people started to get off the bus. There were only 3 people that wanted to go to the TTC! The bus driver said, "Ok, ok...we'll go to the MK first and then go to the TTC." Everyone cheered as we loaded back into the bus. As it turned out, we got to MK faster on the bus (i.e. rather than taking the monorail to the TTC and switching to MK/Resorts monorail). After checking with some other CM's we discovered that a train on the TTC/Epcot side of the monorail broke down near the TTC and it took almost 2 hours to clear the tracks. The TTC (always to be avoided if possible because it is such a big bottleneck) mushroomed beyond capacity and about 55 buses were redirected to the TCC to pick up the slack. The buses were able to shoulder most of the burden while the ferryboat and the remaining MK/Resort monorail were only able to transport about one third of the crowd.
So, I learned something. Monorails work good until one breaks and then the whole route breaks down too. Boats are slow. Buses rescue boats and monorails. Buses are not romantic but get the job done and the driver will change his route if you ask nicely (with 35 friends). End of line.
