Repainting of Epcot Central Plaza?

I think the two different colors for Innoventions West and Innoventions East were simply someone's idea of a way to differentiate the two. They painted the entrances the bright colors to give them some identity and excitement and did so with the breezeways as well. I'm sure it helps guests with identifying where they are in the park.

Back in the Communicore days, the internal corridors were intended to be a significant means of circulation and the buildings were much more permeable as a result. One could look out through the windows to see the pavilions beyond and stay oriented. Now that Innoventions basically blocks all that, the breezeways are really the only means of access to the pavilions beyond and thus they have highlighted their significance by painting them bright colors (and applying bad Postmodern design). Basically, one design solution (Innoventions) creates another problem that has to be solved (breezeway identity).

I'm all for color-coding to help people stay oriented. And I like vivid colors. I just don't like the way they have been used in this latest case.

They really just need to add a bypass prior to Guest Relations and the Art of Disney store - that would greatly help folks who want to directly go to those attractions. Innoventions and the plaza needs a clean and cohesive redesign, because it's a cluttered mess of partial elements from 1982, 1994, 1999, and 2014 that are all vying for your attention and distracting from one another. The answer is not more window wraps.

The breezeway colors that they added about five years ago is nifty, but the mid-90s illuminated directional signs that they ripped out of the planters in the process needs to come back in a new form. The overhead signage above the breezeway is too small and the arrows are confusing.

Also, the LED wait time signs when you exit the breezeways could display the attraction logo and arrows if they decided to update them. And they should.

What a shame it is to have lost the "openness" of Communicore.

What a shame it is to have lost the "openness" of Communicore. You're right, you could look out on the plaza as you walked around, stay oriented, get a sense of the future in looking out at the other buildings, etc. It was bright and airy. Now, Innoventions is a dark cave. There's really not much there that's worthwhile, either. It's simply a dead zone. Here you have these cool buildings - but no reason to go in them. They can paint them bright neon orange for all I care... Won't change a thing.

I find myself unable to get worked up about the color scheme on the outside of the buildings when the inside of the buildings is just a large expanse of nothing. I mean, why should I care what color they paint an enclosed expanse of nothing? Disney can continue extending the middle finger to their customers by continuing to treat EPCOT nothing more than the park that sells booze, and I'll continue spending my vacation dollars elsewhere.

I agree with this. Actually I think there was a slight direction change in the design from the original Epcot until now. Communicore (which became Innoventions) was supposed to be Epcot's "Main Street" giving guests a preview or a way to start their day in, calming, futuristic spaces with open windows (And air conditioning for that matter) but the entrances were not direct. I don't know how many people really used them as a "Main street".

I would have covered the whole central area between the Communicore buildings in a glass roof, and have more entrances/exits to get around FW more easily.

And that's it exactly. I've made my peace with the Epcot overhaul just as I'm coming to terms (slowly and tearfully) with the defurbishment of the Polynesians CGH...that being said I will not pay admission costs to Epcot until major improvements are made. Ditto DHS. Unfortunately poly is now on this list as well.

Actually, that's my favorite part of Innoventions... that's a great, cool, quiet place to sit down right there!

I agree, it doesn't look too bad. I kind of like it. I personally would've preferred more blue and silver tones but I think this looks fine. I was really afraid they were going to do something really putrid.

Couple more photos. Sorry for low quality, it was getting dark. This seems to be the finished product. The paint job extends all the way from Club Cool and Mouse Gear to Art of Disney and Guest Relations, but so far, nothing has changed on the other sides of the buildings.

In person it does look a lot better than it does in these photos. The finished product makes the color scheme make more sense. It absolutely does make the place look more fresh than before. My biggest complaint is still that its just too noisy and there's too many different color tones.

I bet some of the "noise" would be reduced if they got rid of a lot of the clutter in Innoventions Plaza, such as all of the tacky metal rods, posters, Mouse Gears, stands, The Electric Umbrella and the ugly awning structure thing.
