LMAO FACTS! What black person in America is going on Splash and/or Jungle Cruise for black history and to feel proud to be black? Because I surely am not and let’s In addition, it’s nice to have another black voice here.
Lol right! I was scratching my head reading that response but I was like “I’ll give it a go.”

It seriously does feel great to have a fellow black voice hear. Though I’ve always appreciated your opinions before knowing so this just makes it sweeter haha 🥰

I remember when Disney published a gumbo recipe that called for kale and quinoa (🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️) and black people were not having it. They eventually took it down.😂

Oh my god! I just let out the ugliest chuckle right now. That is so funny! Black Twitter does not play sometimes. I’m going to google that blog right now for a good laugh.
Oh I'm not saying Jungle Cruise is representative of Black History in any way. But in terms of African American history, Splash Mountain is the only ride I can think of at any Disney park that is based on African American history and folk lore.

To my knowledge Tiana is a Disney creation from 2009. Brer Rabbit, Brear Bear, and Bear Fox, are African American created folk tale characters that have been around since the 1800s.
Yeah, which is too bad. I got what you were saying though but the wording was off so as a black person I just wanted to clarify. I don’t want people reading that and thinking any of those rides are on the syllabus for any Black History Month lesson lol.

Oh for sure, that would be out of the question.

Heck I can't think of anything educational in Disneyland besides Mr Lincoln. Epcot has some nice educational stuff here and there though.

I will say that the Animal Kingdom Lodge was our honeymoon hotel and at the hotel and restaurants there are cultural representatives from Africa. We had great conversations with those representatives and we also had some great African food.

Disney World does a really good job of this.
And Kilimanjaro Safaris had cultural representatives driving the vehicles at opening. Made for a MUCH better experience than "Jan from New Jersey".

What ride at DL is based on black history? Because it’s not Splash and there is literally no other ride I can think of, so I’m wondering which ride you’re talking about?

It's quite interesting how Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, the castle parks, typically celebrate American idealism, but seemingly exclude black people from the story, and lest we forget indigenous peoples of America.

It's telling as to where the country was when the parks were built/Disneyland was copied. And more telling that they are only trying to course correct now.

Look at the 'American Adventure' in Epcot. This show could easily include a prominent Black historical figure/story. I mean, you could even adapt Lincoln and expand the show at Disneyland (I'm sure I'll get flamed for such a thought), add a Martin Luther King Jr. segment/AA, etc.

ETA:

See below posts, I made a mistake and missed the Frederick Douglas scene in ‘American Adventure’.

So true! The American Adventure should have a prominent historical Black person in it! Maybe somebody like...how about Fredrick Douglass?! And he should speak! And have his OWN scene on stage!

And to represent Native Americans they should have - let’s see...how about Chief Joseph?! Yeah, he’d be great and not just in the montage at the end - he needs to speak and also have his OWN scene!

Nah, would never happen - stupid, racist Disney.

I do remember the Chief moment.

I was going through a video to jog my memory and must have missed Frederick Douglas.

I’ve never been to Epcot but are you telling me that Fredrick Douglass is not only an AA on the attraction but has his own scene? And yet a certain poster came on here giving that recommendation of how Disney can be more inclusive without ever having been on the attraction? To make matters worse, the post has been up for over 24 hours and nobody corrected them until you? 😩 As we all know, this is why attractions like Splash Mountain are going away. Not because its problematic but because there is no stopping the cancel culture machine that wants to devour everything in its path. 90% of these people couldn’t even tell you why something is problematic or racist. That or they don’t want to lose their job. God forbid you say anything on social media that doesn’t jive with the far left.

This is great news. It is nice things are just sounding a lot better now that we have an adult in the White House again and there just seems to be more co-operation between the government and states. Dr. Fauci said it could be by April that everyone could just get the vaccine and no more categories. That doesn't mean everyone will have access to the vaccine but it will greatly change things heading into the summer. Of course I'll believe it when I see it, but if true, we're talking just mere months now. And I can see a lot of changes by the end of the year.
Adult in the White House? The bureaucratic log jam in the various governments has not gotten any better just looks different. Dr. Fauci has always spoken as a Doctor, a clinician not as a politician, an economist or anything else. All good news is because the numbers are declining despite fear mongers making constant noise, the math is what it is. So long as people keep using some degree of common sense and maintain the prescribed protocols in conjunction with the continued distribution of vaccines more good news will continue. The politicians have actually not been helpful at all.

I will largely agree there. Science will end the pandemic. Politicians did buy us vaccine, though. I’d rather be here than Canada...

Dr. Fauci is finally able to just be honest and be as transparent as possible because of that adult in the White House today. He made that very clear up until just a few weeks ago that wasn't the case. But yeah, it's still America a politics always gets in the way, we agree on that. But still much better now.

Thank you!

I have a very strong hunch that all the voices railing against Disney theme parks being "racist" or "not representative of fill-in-the-blank slice of demographic", not just here but in the media more broadly, have never actually been on most Disney theme park attractions that are based on real history.

Not attractions with singing chickens in a cartoon swamp, but attractions based on the actual hard facts that created America.

The American Adventure attraction is truly a great one. It's one of the reasons why I still love Epcot, and thus still desire to visit WDW every once in awhile. If it weren't for Epcot, I could easily skip WDW for the rest of my life. And if it wasn't for The American Adventure, the draw of Epcot as a whole would be dimmed for me.

There are no “black history” attractions.

No, there certainly aren't. There are no white history attractions, nor are there any Hispanic-American history attractions, or Asian-American attractions, etc.. There are, however, several major American History attractions in WDW and DLR, and they all involve Black voices and/or perspective in their telling.

As seen above, The American Adventure features a Frederick Douglas animatronic (and a sophisticated, expensive animatronic at that!) in its telling of the American story. There are other Black animatronics in that show representing more average Americans going about their lives through history. There is also the filmed excerpts of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and the 20th century Civil Rights struggle that all play important parts in that attraction.

Those Black Americans stand alongside their fellow Americans of many other races to help tell the story of our great nation, warts and all. It's one of my absolute favorite Disney attractions!

I was specifically speaking of black history, not Hispanic history, Asian history, white history, or what have you, because someone insinuated that Splash was a black history ride. In addition, I was also speaking of the DLR, not WDW.

Back to reopening Disneyland, @Darkbeer posted in the Knott's thread the news that Knott's is holding a job fair and accepting applications for new employees to work in food/beverage and various operational jobs for the spring Boysenberry Festival.

Which begs the question... If Knott's has been open and running Festivals for the past six months, but the rest of the park isn't open and it still needs to hire more people for the spring, then how many front-line Knott's employees actually have stuck around for the past full year of closure?

And if lots of Knott's employees are now scattered and gone even though Knott's has remained opened at reduced capacity, then what does that mean for Disneyland CM's and their two parks that have been entirely closed for the same amount of time?

It would seem to indicate that a lot of CM's have now picked up and left and moved on with their life. Got other jobs in retail or dining or other entry-level jobs in the service industry. They may still be in OC, or they may have moved home to Arizona, or picked up and moved to Utah or Texas, etc.

It would seem to be an ominous sign for Disneyland's CM ranks that Knott's needs to hire more employees even though they've been semi-open for the past six months.

Oh, got it. No, there is no history attraction in any Disney theme park that is based solely on a specific race or ethnicity of American.

There are simply a handful of Disney attractions based on broader American history, and all of them include a prominent Black perspective and a Black voice in the telling of that American history.

Like Rodger Rabbit? No wait, that's not one of them.

A Bay Area epidemiologist predicts that the pandemic will be prolonged and that it will be years, not months, before we can gain the upper hand on the pandemic. He predicts that the decline in cases won't last and rebound worse than ever with the new variants.

In terms of Disneyland reopening, I have a feeling that it won't be reopening any time soon, not until we do get the upper hand, which will take years, not months.

What a stupid thing for him to predict. The UK variant is running rampant in the UK and cases are plummeting. This sounds more like a Bay Area epidemiologist trying to get his moment on the soap box before America goes back to not caring about science.
