Remind me again about the castle and a hurricane.

let me ask you this...................do you think the park was designed to be in CENTRAL FLORIDA without being prepared to deal with a Hurricane?

Well, the last hurricane to blow through central Florida before Charley was Donna... and that was 44 years ago. Back then orlando was a smal farm town. Once Disney announced plans to build there, THEN it became the bustling metropolis it is now.

Frances is apparently as bad as Andrew was when it trashed Miami. And Frances is also alot bigger than Andrew... this is a MEGA hurricane. One big monster. They say you can fit both Charley and Andrew inside it. Most hurricanes have an eye that's 10-12 miles wide. Frances' eye is 35-40 miles wide. And also both Andrew and Charley blew through and were gone within a couple hours of the areas they hit. Frances is slow moving in comparisona nd they're saying it would take 6-8 hours for it to go through each area it strikes. 6-8 hours of 140mph winds could probably level alot of things. It doesn't look good for Orlando/WDW kiddies. They're right smack in the highest risk of damage to property/lives according to charts I've seen. Everyone is already evacuating over this way to Tampa Bay or heading up north. They're already saying that Frances is the biggest natural disater to hit the USA in history.

And when they were buliding Disney they did put into the plans that the buildings needed to survive the winds.

Frances Eye is now 19 miles wide and is closed. And they were saying that she is bigger than Andrew! I mean she is the size of my state!!! YIKES!!!

Im just hoping a miracle comes along.......

I'm hoping for a miracle for you too Atta, along with all the other people in France's path. I'm keeping a close eye on this and where everyone's at. I hope you all stay safe! I'll be thinking of you all and keeping you in my dreams.

fortunate

Though this storm was large in size and did hit with ferocity, it did die significantly before hitting land. This will not be the largest disaster in US History (natural) after all.

it did not hit with the impact that Andrew did, and granted it was much larger than Charlie, Charlie was a much stronger storm than Francis. Francis top recorded WIND GUST was 124 mph just below Kennedy Space Center. Charlie hit with sustained winds at 145 mph.

Those of us in Florida really dodged a bullet here even though it did hit. Even this far south I lost power for 12 hours.

Perhaps this helps...

As I learned during hurricane Elaine in the late 1980's the original design guidelines were for buildings to be able to withstand 90mph sustained winds with gusts up to 110mph. The subsequent design guidelines based on updates to related codes are 125mph sustained winds with 150mph gusts. We were told this information by managers at the Contemporary when they evacuated EVERYONE from Fort Wilderness to the Contemporary. We stayed in the conference rooms in a Disney version of a Red Cross shelter. This was also the first time the park closed early in its history due to weather (or at least that's what we were told at the time). They removed everything not permanently fixed in place in the parks - it looked barren. They also rehearsed a plan to move guests into the utilidoors in case of tornados. The hurricane never hit Orlando, just the bands, and no damage was seen.

P.S. The spires are not removable.
