Remember when you could ride in the front of the monorail?

My son was wearing a “It's my birthday” button and while waiting for the monorail a cast member said to him “come with me” as the monorail arrived. We all got to ride up front and he got a monorail pilot's license. I believe they stopped allowing passengers up front after the accident a few years ago where a cast member was killed in a monorail collision.

We did it at least twice in the mid-80s (a high percentage, since we only rode the monorail a half dozen times total) -- my mother was stunningly beautiful and I think the male drivers liked to "randomly select" our family for the honor as a result. ;)

Perhaps it's just that I was so small (6 or 8 each time), but I remember that the car seemed enormous, with a curved, bench-style seat that wrapped the entire way around the front, from which you had about a 270-degree panoramic view. I also remember being shocked that the drivers didn't wear jumpsuits or strap themselves into elaborate race-car style cockpits, as I had imagined.

We did on our honeymoon as well. Oddly enough, the following day was when the monorail accident took place. We were on the TTC/MK line. The driver was showing off in front of two women that were in with us as well. "The monorail is only supposed to go ***mph in this section. Do you want to see it go faster??"

It struck a chord with us when we heard of the accident.

As mentioned, guests riding in there was discontinued after the accident.

It was a nice view, but two of the three times I rode up there, it was hot and muggy. I felt badly for the guys who had to sit in there all day.
