The food isn't that much of an issue for me, anyway--I know which parks to go to for variety (e.g. anywhere but the MK), and I don't exactly hate chicken tenders and fries--I just don't want them for every meal.

If they ever change the Liberty Tree Tavern lunch into a character meal, then there will be no place for our family to eat a full service meal at the MK. We haven't been to Tony's since they did away with breakfast and thought their lunch and dinner was way too overpriced. No Crystal Palace since the characters took over. NO FREAKING WAY we'll go to Cinderella's Royal Table considering the changes they have made. And the Plaza is quite possibly the most overpriced place at WDW. And the MK counter service spots are nowhere near the quality of the AK's, IMO. Cosmic Ray's and Pecos Bill are good, but nothing out of the ordinary. You can get that stuff anywhere in the other parks.

Except, of course, for the free melted cheese right out of the pump. Can't beat that, and both Ray's and Bill's have it.

But is that a real make or break item?

Unfortunately, it was part of the decline in food service at WDW

There was a time when just about every restaurant in the MK was open. El Pirata, Veranda, Aunt Polly's (I think), Gergi's/Lumiere's, Tomorrowland Terrace, etc. While they may have not been packed, they provided a variety of different theming and food options. Not only that, but there were also some smaller markets set up in Main Street and Liberty Square that are either smaller or non-existant today. Since then, the bean counters have made many of these seasonal and therefore packed more people into the remaining restaurants and decreased the food options as a whole. =/

The worst example of declining food options has got to be Epcot. Counter-service food for your average person has gone into the toilet. There was a time when we had a tough choice between places like Farmer's Market, the Odyssey, and Pizza Pasta Piaza. Now, we're down to Electric Umbrella and Liberty Inn (aka Burgers/Chicken Strips in Future World, or Burgers/Chicken Strips in World Showcase). Oh boy.

You know, you make a good point. I guess I've sort of been used to the Odyssey and the Innoventions East restaurant being closed. But I guess the saving grace is the counter service spots around WS. Still, I miss the Farmer's Market worse than anything.

I really had not considered how few sit-downs there are at MK - we always go to Liberty Tree for lunch and are gone from the park by dinner. More than AK though, right? Thank goodness we are getting the Asian-influenced restuarant there pretty soon. But back to MK, why did the Veranda close? Was it lack of interest in that type of food, not profitable, not busy enough, bad location, what? Anyone know?
