Well since you brought up terrorism..... I'm writing this from memory but its all information publically available...

Its an Italian cruise ship that in 1985 was hijacked by mid eastern extremists. Mr. Klinghoffer, an american, was shot in his wheelchair and tossed overboard. I cant remember if his body was recovered or not.

The ship was surrendered in egypt before a special forces raid was launched to rescue the hostages. A plane transporting the terrorists to algeria was intercepted by the navy and forced to land at Signoella AFB in Italy. Ended up a standoff between the people on the plane, US Special forces and italian forces. The italians ended up taking the terrorists into custody - it was an italian crusie ship after all - and through the wonders of justice in this world, they ended up getting let off the hook. Or something like that.

Anyhow, there is a history of curise ship hijackings in that part of the world....

OK, thanks, I was only 3 at the time :) I can see why they would be a little nervous

According to plans, there is STILL space where the current "Outpost" is - and there is also space between Germany and Italy...and don't forget World Showplace! :)

Actually World Showcase was designed for 28 countries or pavilions. There is a lot of room if you look from the backstage area.

There is a lot of room between Mexico and Norway, between China and Germany,Germany and Italy, Italy and America, Japan and Morocco, Morocco and France, Canada and Imagination.

There is room at outpost and if the shops at Showcase Plaza were removed there is some more room, but apart from that i cant see where.

Well to be honest EPCOT was originally set for more country pavilions with walkways leading to another row of them between some of the existing countries. I had thought that plan was shelved after the road and Caribbean Beach were built. Because of the road and the resort I do not see that there is enough room to make you get that “total immersion” feeling. I myself have been hoping for more countries in EPCOT. Heres to hoping but I don’t see the room.

I love the Episode of Vault Disney that showed the opening of EPCOT and The Sub Sahara Africa Pavilion that turned into a glorified drink stand. Was that pavilion cancelled because of Animal Kingdoms eventuality or because of politics and lack of funds?

I heard due to its price tag and no good sponsorship...

I seem to remember reading somewhere (possibly on this board) that they just went so overboard planning the Africa Pavilion that they realized they could make a whole new park just based on their ideas for that pavilion. So they ended the pavilion planning and went into park planning instead.

I'll see if I can find anything else...

EDIT: My medication may be too strong, I think I confused the Africa Pavilion with the Great Movie Ride concept for EPCOT that turned into Disney-MGM Studios...hmm.

I thought that all the countries have the same amount of space around the lagoon but that they all vary in the amount they go back. I also seem to remember that the space currently between each country is enough to put another country in should the need arise. If that is true then the amount of countries represented could almost double, correct?

But in order to put anything there, much of backstage would have to be removed including storage of Friendship boats, Illuminations equipment, etc. Not to mention CM transportation to WS and part of FW.

But is that feasible? More storage can always be built behind one of the countries, roads and walkways can be re-routed, etc. Is there something more substantial that would inhibit that type of growth or is there not even enough room around the perimeter?

No. There is plenty of open ground there now. They wouldn't have to move the marina either. In fact, Germany and Japan have large open areas that originally were for rides and the infrastructure is still there.

I've got a pretty good blueprint of epcot and I see room for 5 more pavillions. The sites for all of world showcase are about the same size, wedge shaped, seperated by service roads so if you count the empty wedges there are:

between France and Morrocco
between Morrocco and Japan
between Italy and Germany
between Germany and the marina behind China
and between Norway and Mexico

They could make an other by getting rid of or rehabing the millenium villiage

I don't think they would start making new ones in between half the size, they would be too small, it just "wouldn't look right". I also don't think they would put new countries behind existing countries (unless they were thematically connected somehow) I think they would use the areas behind to add attractions (like the big box behind Germany for the ride that was never built or the Japan's "Meet the world show" that never was put in.

Has the "world showcase events pavillion" actually been used cos every time we are at WDW it never seems to be used adn the only thing that would fit in where it is just now would be if they added a scottish part and welsh part to the UK pavillion as it has a distinctly more english feel to it.

And what is the likelyhood of them adding in new countries if it was feasible [space wise]

Didn't you know that Americans think Scotland and Wales are just provinces of England.

That's a joke BTW:lol:

Well there are a few i have met over the years who have asked where abouts in england is scotland and other fairly ridiculous comments. One of the best was talking to kirsty who works at the british pub, she has been out there for about a month now was asked by some clever american how long it took disney to train her to get her accent. She did think about saying well only 20 years in fife, but went for im actually from scotland.

Wat was also quite funny was her first name badge had her from Houston then she got two, one with fife scotland and the other fife england.

Another thing is that once we were at one of the carts at the entrance to the world showcase events place and it had all the country pin bages and an american family walked up and got every one wrong except the UK and the US. They actually thought some were for countries not represented at EPCOT.

Most of them though are aware of where scotland is mainly cos they've been or decent from or have family who are from or live in scotland.

Most probably dont know where wales is or know it exists.
