FYI, looks like the lobby refurb has been pushed to next year from what I understand.
In addition, the Grand Floridian convention center will close next summer for refurbishment, reopening in the fall.
Thank goodness. Let’s delay this as long as possible until the Genslerism that took hold in WDI is rooted out.

yikes talk about empty where's the merch
Seems pretty similar to what it used to be to me shelving/merch wise. It’s mostly in the back of the store and I believe there’s the same amount, if not more, merch. It probably just looks like there’s less merch because the store looks more open and bright.

I was just looking for information on this, but going over there to check myself is a hassle. Does the lobby still have construction walls up and has anything changed other than new paint?

Haven’t been there in a week or two, but to my knowledge, they’ve been down for some time and no new ones have taken their place.

That’s harder for me to answer. Are you asking about in the refurbed store? If so, then quite a bit has changed in the update visually. There’s quite a few articles that show a side-by-side comparison of the “new” and “old”. The footprint is, expectedly, the same.

I've seen pics of the new store, but last I heard, I thought that areas of the lobby had been repainted. I was under the impression that a lot of theming elements would be torn out in favor of something generic and I was curious how much had occurred.

The railings and ceiling were repainted when the rooms on the upper floors were redone since they updated the hallways leading to the guest rooms at the same time. Nothing else has changed in the areas of the lobby accessible to visitors not staying in the main building, with the exception of specific spaces like 1900 Park Fare, the gift shop, etc.

It has not happened. There was some new paint up high, on the pillars and the ceiling 3rd 4th and 5th guest levels. Very subtle.

What’s the chance ( with all these character and small resort enhancements returning this summer) that the Grand Floridian lobby refresh brings the long delayed return of the Garden View Tea room and afternoon tea?

Disney has shared a first look at the lobby refurbishment:

From the parks blog:

Coming Soon: Grand Floridian Lobby Bar
There’s something special about walking into the Grand Floridian—the soft piano music, glowing chandeliers, and aromatic floral arrangements create a luxurious, yet relaxing atmosphere. And soon, guests will be able to take in this ambiance with a refreshing beverage in hand, thanks to the new lobby bar!

Inspired by the lobby’s iconic birdcage, the bar will pay tribute to the resort’s Victorian roots with intricate woodwork, stained glass, and brass accents. You may even spot colorful birds in the stained glass and murals throughout the atrium! Opposite the bar, guests will still find the Victorian cage-style elevator that fans know and love.

New Look, Same Grand Feel
The surrounding lobby, staircase and front desk will be refreshed with a mix of botanical accents and inviting colors to create an airy, garden-like atmosphere.

Disney Imagineers are approaching this refurbishment with great care and focus in maintaining the heart and story of the Grand Floridian, while adding fresh new life to the lobby for guests to enjoy.

As shown in the new rendering, the lobby will feature beautiful new carpeting with Victorian-inspired borders and scrollwork featuring hand-drawn florals inspired by turn-of-the-century botanical studies. Updated furnishings will blend rich finishes and brass accents with cozy, welcoming fabrics–plus a few playful touches inspired by Florida’s natural beauty and Victorian decorating trends.
