Refillable mugs

When staying at a WDW property, I know you can purchase the refillable mugs. My question is can you refill them anywhere or only at your resort where you purchased the mug?

The official rules say that you can only use them at the resort that you purchased them at and only for the length of your stay. However, I have a set of the original ASR Music mugs that I take when we stay there and have never had a problem. I have even had a cast member try to buy one for his personal collection.

The same thing applied for the Pop Century for us April. We bought the originals in 2004 and took them back in 2005. They were identical to the previous years. Same colors and everything. It's worth a shot.

As it was stated...the official rules do say the mug is only good for your resort during your stay only. However, Reality says....CM's does not care if you use a mug from the all stars at the polynesian 5 years after you got the mug. You can fill it up with the CM standing right next to you and they won't say anything but hello.

Technically only at the resort you purchased them from and never in the parks.

It wouldnt suprise me if they did not come our with a barcode scanning system next to the soda machines to regulate the usage. Disney is losing a tidey sum on people who abuse the program.....

Here is the problem that I see with that. If they decide to do that then they would have to decide on what is a fair pricing system. If I was staying somewhere for three days, I wouldn't want to pay the same price that someone who is staying for 11 days. I also think that a simple barcode system wouldn't work. It would have to be more advanced to recognize all the different check out dates.

The barcode system sounds like a great idea, but as Disneyinsider said thier would be some problems. Another problem i see is that if everybody had to scan the barcode then there would be a long wait line at the soda fountains. As it already is there usually is a line if you go at a peak eating time. Also, I use to work at a grocery store as a cashier. If there was something wrong with the barcode the item wouldnt scan. I cant confirm this but if you accidentaly scratch a barcode thier is a chance that the barcode wouldnt work.

The last few trips I haven't gotten one since I spend so little time at the resort, but the mugs have gotten smaller haven't they? Just wondering.

Not old, just vintage.
My Port Orleans mugs from the very first year they were offered (many years ago...lost count) have been all over Disney property. I can definetly say i got my $9.99 worth. I think that is what they cost when they first began the program. No one has ever said I cant use them. They have actually become quite a conversation starter. Maybe we'll buy new ones some day...only after these totally fall apart.

We have purchased and used only mugs from our previous trips, partly because that's one more thing to pack. If you are spending that much for a Disney vacation, then you can afford the mugs.

I've seen mugs for the past and diff resorts before, and if I recall correctly, even mugs not from Disney.

Think about it. How long has Disney been doing this? If they were losing that much money, would it still be around? Soft drinks are CHEAP. Especially when you consider the bulk Disney purchases. Then consider the prices in the parks for a bottle. Those day guests are helping you with the cost of all you drink in your $10 mug! :slurp: Thanks day guests!

I say, buy the souvineer each time around and enjoy to your hearts content!

The mugs are soo cool. You just go to the hotel and pick it up in the dinning area. I did it when we stayed at All star sports. It's the best money spent! Never have to worry about drinks!

I highly doubt there will ever be a barcode or any other type of system. It would be much to complex to even bother with. The amount of people who actually bring back their mugs can't be terribly high, and as we all know Disney and Coke have a sweetheart deal (judging from the ubiquity of Coke products and lack of competitors at WDW) so I really don't think it's hurting them any.

With varied arrival/departure dates and the other factors, it simply wouldn't be cost effective for them to install expensive machines in a couple of dozen resorts just to stop a few people from getting refills.

do they still do them at the waterparks because they were good value for money, because you can keep the mug until next time you go and update the barcode.

If Disney were smart, they would figure the cost of the mugs into the room rates, give one to each guest at check in time, with a bar code on it that expires on the last day of their stay.
If you decided to extend your stay, they could just reprogram the mug accordingly.

Same principle as the room keys.

It wouldn't work if loaned out to friends, sold on EBay, or if attempting to use at a differant Resort.

No chance of mug abuse.

Everyone is happy. (except for the abusers of course) :D

I was under the impression that Disney gets the actual soda for free. It's an advertising thing for Coke. The thing they may lose money on is the revenue not generated by sales of mugs. I seriously doubt this would "make or break" Disney either way. Others on this forum have suggested it might be immoral to take advantage of this system. <shrug>

Yes, but then again.....if Disney wants to sell the free soda they are getting from Coke, then they are losing money.....

An’ I’m gonna hold on
For the rest of my days,

Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known,
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone

Here I go again,
Here I go...

Haven't we discussed this before.
It's all about ethics and how you apply them.

Only problem I found with the barcode at the waterparks is that 1 person will get a mug with the barcode and rescan it 5 times for each person in the group so they can get drinks.

Others were more devious and would scan and fill a mug, walk around the corner and pour it in another cup and repeat the process until everyone has a drink.

Yeah they have. I stayed at WL this year and I noticed some guys by the pool had bigger mugs, obviously from a while ago. When I got home and was putting the mug in my collection of mugs I noticed that too.

Thanks for clarifying. Not a big deal considering you can refill as much as you want, but still good to know.
