So, 3 days at Universal, a day each at Sea World and Busch Gardens and finish up with a few days at the beach. Very easy to visit Florida and never even give Mickey a second thought or one thin dime. And that's before Epic Universe makes its debut. Disney thinks they can pull a Will Smith with its fan base as much as they want. Its about time the greedy playground bully got his teeth knocked out......the tanking economy and foreign conflicts may take care of that sooner than later. Chris Rock may have the last laugh yet.

There are actually legitimate things that are IMO fair to be upset about and cancel your tickets over. Poor maintenance, prices, the Genie debacle, lack of quality in new attractions or closures. There are even "political" issues that I see as valid reasons to boycott such as the company doing business with violent dictatorships. None of this has hurt their business.

If so, that would be a quick way for a bunch of Florida legislators to lose their seats next election. However, as someone who grew up around politics, you can never underestimate just how fragile most politicians’ egos are so it wouldn't surprise me.

why? it's an easy argument to spin to the mob... "Stop giving Disney special access... lets hold them accountable to you, the electorate... just like everyone else"

They know it's not 'evicting disney'. They can easily spin a message that it's about taking away unnecessary special perks. Like if they were pushing to remove anti-trust protections certain sports leagues have... no one would take that as getting rid of their teams. They'd see it as removing grift that the old fat boys have from another time.

Would be easy to make that kind of story for Disney in FL too...

For those wondering, Reedy Creek Improvement District is not entirely unique. The Villages, a massive multi-county residential development north of Walt Disney World, is within a somewhat similar arrangement of a Community Development District. The Villages Community Development Districts are run by a Board of Supervisors elected by the land owners, similar to Reedy Creek Improvement District. The districts are empowered to control water management, waste management and conservation just like Reedy Creek. They operate their own Department of Public Safety which enforces the Florida Fire Prevention Code just like Reedy Creek. While the districts themselves don’t have de jure zoning authority, Sumter County for example designates the portions within their jurisdiction as a Residential Planned Unit Development a category that ultimately gives the developer significant control of how the property is developed. The Villages even operate their own charter schools for the children of their employees (and are building big new ones right now).

This is an interesting sentence.

“The Reedy Creek Drainage District shall henceforth be known by the name of Reedy Creek Improvement District, and shall continue to be a public corporation of this State and have perpetual existence.”

Perpetual until the state changes the law :) Prior state law doesn't bind future state law. That's just language to be clear the law had a determined life, and not just a age limited entity.

The difference is that taking away MLB's antitrust exemption doesn't place additional burden on taxpayers. "Hey, we're sticking it to those greedy corporate fat cats! Also, you get to foot the bill for our petty retaliation!" doesn't seem like a great rallying cry.

You act like disney doesn’t pay its property taxes?

The county is plenty active within the district already. The big difference is administrative.

I'm referring to Orange County residents having to pay for police, fire, and EMS services that RCID currently is responsible for. There's a lot of acreage and visitors to protect with those services on WDW property.

Policing within the district is the responsibility of the county sheriffs and Disney already pays for additional patrols and presence. The counties also already operate their own fire departments so taxes paid to the District for those services would likely shift to the counties.

The taxes paid by Disney to RVID wouldn't remain 100% Disney's responsibility if the burden for fire protection shifts from RCID to Orange County. Disney would pay the same tax rate to the County ad any other commercial landowners. Maybe it wouldn't be a drastic increase for those property owners, but nobody enjoys seeing their tax bill go up - and certainly not when it's happening because some politicians decided to pass spite legislation. And if it actually passed, Disney would fight it in court and win, because that dumbest legislator removed any plausible deniability by tweeting what he did. That's more taxpayer money wasted - but statewide this time rather than just 1 county.

Depending on who you are there are upsides and downsides to this whole Reedy Creek Improvement District issue, all the debate done, ultimately it would be best for all parties concerned to not disturb the current arrangement.
The current arrangement also includes Reedy Creek Solid Waste division which includes all the multi ton daily garbage locations pick up, repairs, improvements /recycling efforts 24/7 all around WDW. Good luck for Orange County third party to handle that huge role if that ever happens. Fellow guests may be getting a whiff of a scent not too pleasant among a few things during their expensive vacation. I heard those big rats were out in full force when NYC garbage was piling up on the local streets. Be careful what one wishes for if Reedy Creek is out of the picture.

Solid waste services are handled by Reedy Creek Energy Services. No reason the counties could not continue to have them provide that service.

@el jefe You are once again off topic of the original thread. The Mods have already deleted over 200 posts because of this. You are welcome to your opinion but that is not what this thread is about. Please stay on topic or you're going to get the entire thread shut down.

This might be slightly off topic but it plays into the RCID. Do those living in Golden Oaks pay pay taxes to the RCID? I'm just asking because if the RCID was removed, If they didn't pay taxes before would that mean they would have to?
