Red Trolly from Disney Springs to DHS?

Yup, busy shopping malls in a giant city. And those trolleys really MOVE through the narrow streets of The Grove or Americana. Look at this thing go!

These systems have been in operation in multiple shopping malls in Southern California for years. They can work in Disney Springs, just like they work in malls and on Buena Vista Street in DCA.

Anyone catch the little boy at the end who put a penny on the track to get squished by the trolley, and then went to check it out after it went by? I used to do that with pennies on train tracks when I was a kid decades ago! Kinda funny how kids still know to do that, but now in a super-fancy ultra-themed mall with an electric trolley instead of a dirty freight train.

They can move, but in practical use, they are generally nowhere near that fast. Just like Main Street, too many people in the way. Americana is much more open and better about getting around. The Grove's trolley is much more closed in. However, the Grove/Farmer's market and Americana are big outdoor centers, so the trolleys are a nice alternative to walking.

Yes, more than a few Disney people worked on the Grove project. There's a proposal being horse-traded right now from Caruso where he's wanting to expand the Grove/Farmer's Market trolley to loop outside the center down 3rd Street to the Beverly Center, then back down San Vicente and Wilshire to LACMA/La Brea and the upcoming subway stop and up Fairfax back to the Grove in a true loop. The neighbors are having a conniption.

In that neighborhood along 3rd Street and Beverly Blvd, there's a specific contingent of old-lady busybodies who are well-known to extort new businesses and try to keep traffic out. They make life very difficult for the business community on those two corridors. Caruso ended up paying them off to get the Grove built. The trolley down San Vicente and Wilshire would be fine. Although I'm all for this in those neighborhoods for all sorts of reasons, trying to fit it on 3rd, Beverly or Fairfax would be a traffic nightmare - on one of the worst corners of the city already. Just not enough room. I'm confident he can find another solution, though.

I hope WDW gets a Red Car line just so I can get the trolley car ear hat they have at Disneyland. We've never been to Cali. because Orlando is our park. Personally I don't buy Disney stuff online because it's not special to me unless I can link the stuff to a park memory, so I can't get the hat until we get a trolley. Please, please, please!

I think if you want the hat that bad, you should buy a plane ticket to California for the DLR. It doesn't look like WDW will be getting the Red Car Trolley, according to some people.

Beverly and Fairfax can be horrible. Third is alright, for the most part.

I can't really see this plan happening, as of right now.

Just did some fact checking on the trolley at The Grove. They're actually battery powered electric vehicles that recharge via inductive coils placed in the ground at the station stops. Disney Legend Bob Gurr worked on the project. Very cool!
The Red Car Trolleys at Disney's California Adventure are the same. The catenary above is just for show. The conductors even get out and move the [fake] trolley pole just as they would as if it were operating. A loss of efficiency but a definite plus for show!

The submarines at the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage also use the inductive charging at the load/unload station to charge their batteries.

I really don't know why the system has not been pushed for actual mass transit use. It would instantly kill one of the big complaints against typical electric streetcars, the overhead wires which are often perceived as an unattractive mess.

We'll see. Caruso has deep pockets, and LaBonge wants to support the project (and Caruso's money). I agree it's a heavy uphill battle with LADOT, though, and I'd put it at a long shot for a while, most likely.

Europe is starting to jump on the inductive charging bandwagon for a lot of their city streetcars. And this is the solution being looked at for Anaheim's streetcar in the Resort area, specifically at Disney's request. I hope it takes off in the US as well.

Seeing something like this used for internal transit within disney springs really wouldn't surprise me. currently the only alternative to walking from marketplace to west end is the boats... which at times do have extremely long lines. It would make loads of sense if this new Disney Springs project is going to expand the actual grounds on which theirs shopping venues, why not help move people from side to side a little more. People on vacation want to be as lazy as they can be!

It would be cool if these trolleys were at dtd. I don't see disney adding a trolley line from DHS to DTD, it would be too long at 3 miles long with a trolley.

The themed version of newer European trolley systems could easily cover WDW's distances. Besides wine, they have got great public transport in Bordeaux:

Also, bah. Why should Progress City have to take its cue from elsewhere, instead of WDW having got the system first as a show model to convince real cities with? It's the wrong way round!

There's the problem right there... a new trolley would take away all the money Disney earns from the Penny Press machines! No way this will happen now.

Long before Disney Springs was announced, someone posted on here (maybe @Lee) that Downtown Disney was to triple in size. I think Disney Springs doubles the size but there's more to come down the road. And I thought someone posted that some type of trolley would run from OKW through DTD to SS.

It is gaining some ground, but theme parks are usually more interested in technology then governments or builders. I’m still amazed that we have rides like Pooh’s Honey Hunt in Tokyo and Mystic Manor in Hong Kong and people still don’t trust that PRT (personal rapid transit) systems can work safely. PRT is a much simpler program then these attractions use, plus it has been tested for decades now.

Disney is about theming, a Citadis Compact tram is not going to fit into the look of Disney Springs. Also it needs to be able to survive someone hitting it while they are on Buena Vista Drive.
