Most important -
Ease to parks (doesn't have to be as near as Contemporary or Polynesian but no more than a 15 min bus ride for instance)
As above for Downtown Disney
Cleanliness
Decent size room

Not bothered about -
Food (other than good breakfast option)
Character prescence
Cost (can save enough for right place)

Thanks y'all ;)

Well there are the monorail resorts which give you three choices of transportation. Wilderness Lodge has boat and bus. BC, YC and BW are just a walk to Epcot and Studio's. My personal choice would be either GF, Poly or CR. (my son's favorite thing is to ride the monorail!)

Winter next year. Without sounding blasé I'm not too concerned about cost at this stage.
If money is no object and transportation to the theme parks is paramount, then there are 6 options to consider: the 3 Monorail Resorts (Grand Floridian, Contemporary, & Polynesian) and the 3 Epcot Resorts (Beach Club, Yacht Club, & Boardwalk Inn).

All 6 have extensive activities for families. All 6 offer better transportation.

In general, the buses should be avoided as much as possible. Yes, lots think the buses are fine but compared to other modes of transportation, they are pretty much at the bottom. Buses stink when leaving the Magic Kingdom after the Wishes fireworks show.

If you intend to spend most of your time at MK, then go with a Monorail Resort. If you intend to spend most of your time at Epcot and DHS, then go with an Epcot Resort.

If it's a matter of wanting to spend a lot of time at the resort, I'd go with either Yacht & Beach Club (which share WDW's best resort pool and is close to the Boardwalk) or Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL).

As a stand-alone resort, AKL is excellent, perhaps WDW's most exotic and arguably its best resort. However, it's also the farthest from most of the parks.

Grand Floridian has the largest rooms, Wilderness Lodge and AKL the smallest of the Deluxe Resorts. You can get a larger DVC Studio room at AKL but this is in Kidani Village and is away from the main AKL building, which is where all the excitement is.

Which is the "best" is mostly a matter of taste. It really depends on which theming appeals the most to you.

My experience is that plenty argue over which is "best" but, ultimately, it comes down to which theming they like the most. The reasons why "their resort" is the best often are justifications after-the-fact. In my opinion, if you look at the resorts objectively, there is no best. It's simply a matter of your priorities.

Again, if transportation is most important, focus on the 6 resorts I mentioned. (I've stayed at them all and don't really have a favorite.)

We look at 3 things when we're planning a trip. Who we're traveling with, which park/parks we plan to spend the most time in and which resorts are offering a discount. If we're doing a lot of mk then we avoid the allstars, boardwalk area, and akl area and instead stay at one of the monorail resorts, wl, or por/pofq. When we go for food and wine we like the epcot area resorts, especially those around the boardwalk, cbr, or pop. The allstars and akl are also not to far from those either so when there's a discount we consider those as well.

Contemporary, the rooms are rather large and well kept. The only downside is the bathroom sinks. They are low and not very functional. I will try to find a pic to explain why.

Beach Club, Boardwalk and the Swan/Dolphin are centrally located, have decent room size (as Disney goes) and are as clean as any Disney hotels. The Dolphin has the best pool and several places to eat, but it is not Disney-owned, so if you want to do dining packages, Beach Club or Boardwalk would be a better choice.

If you truly don't care about how much it costs, both the Beach Club and Boardwalk have villas you can rent. The villas give you more space, which is really nice. :)

To me the best bus reliability I have had has been the Swan and Dolphin. I like the other choices suggested but when you have to take a bus from a monorail resort, it has been awful especially to AK or DTD.

But I'd double check, at certain times S&D have been known to share buses with Boardwalk, if that is the case, I flop to Yacht and Beach.

Thanks everyone. Some options to chew on there which I'm grateful for.

Just to clear up I'm not loaded - I just don't like to work from lowest option up. Look at the best then go down in price if required is how I like to book places :)

Thanks again x

If money isn't an issue than you cannot go wrong with the 3 MK resorts for children especially! But, my personal preference if I could stay anywhere each trip is without a doubt staying on the Boardwalk at BC YC or BW but we actually end up getting deals at the Dolphin and collect our SPG points for free trips. Love the Swan and Dolphin, cannot beat the prices or location, and if you join SPG they put you on 14th floor and almost always give you a free upgrade to a resort view room where you can see World Showcase, the Boardwalk, the Swan, and Hollywood studios all from a 14th floor birds eye view :) Ill try an find a picture of the view you get for about 129-189 a night

If you do explore S&D they often have some real good deals, be sure to ask or research online, we've never paid rack rate.

If money is no object than it would have to be Poly...best theming, relaxed atmosphere (to the extent that's possible at Disney), good food and best transportation options....man, I wish money was no object

Be aware with Swan & Dolphin that you'll have to pay an extra "resort" fee and for parking if you have a car. They do share with Yacht & Beach/Boardwalk sometimes (I think maybe to/from Animal Kingdom?). I'm also pretty sure S&D doesn't participate in Magical Express and the Dining Plan. We always think about staying there (husband is a teacher so we could get a discount) but the Magical Express thing is a deal breaker.

I second the recommendation for the 3 monorail/3 Epcot resorts. I also thought the drives weren't too bad from Coronado Springs and Port Orleans French Quarter.

To me it seems like it takes forever to get to/from Downtown Disney no matter where you stay, unless you can take a boat (Port Orleans French Quarter/Riverside and Saratoga Springs) - at least that way you don't have to stop at water parks.

If you decide not to spend $$$ for deluxe I'd go with POFQ. It's the quickest bus transport of the mods overall, especially to MK.

I have to agree with previous posters that suggested the Poly. We go every year and have never been disappointed. The rooms are quite large, by Disney standards and we have never had a problem with cleanliness. Beginning or ending a day at the parks, on the balconies, there's nothing like it!

I'll throw in a vote my my favorite resort, Beach Club.

Not only does it have the best pool on property, it is a 7 minute walk into Epcot from the lobby. I take the boat to DHS, a cab to the Contemporary to walk to the MK and then I barely have to deal with buses.

It has great food (Cape May, Yachtsman and Captain's Grille next door). If you are booking way ahead of time, you can rent points and stay there for a much lower price.
