Rant: Kilimanjaro Safari from Hell!

So,

The ms and I decided to go to AK on the 27th of November. We had a great time, except for our Kilimanjaro Safari from hell.

Things that went wrong..

#1- Our driver, Christy, kept messing up the lines, ad-libbing incorrect information, stuttering, and talking over the prerecorded parts

#2- She ran into the bushes on the left. Not a little scrape. A full wheel went in.

#3- She started to turn into one of the service side road. Now, I know where these can lead, and I’m not in the mood to disturb an animal feeding area.

#4- She came within inches of hitting a Bongo on the right side. Guests had to shove it away to save it.

#5- She kept tailgating the vehicle in front of us, and in turn having to slam on the brakes. Now, if you’ve ever ridden in the back of these vehicles, you’ll know how bad their rear suspensions are. Well, couple that with a person who is having difficulty staying on track and is continually slamming on the brakes, with a back seat filled with males jumping up and down… LANDING ON YOUR PRIDE AND JOY. (men, keel over in pain… cause it did hurt like hell!)

#6- The tailgating led to a collision. Granted, it was at slow speed and was just a bump, it shouldn’t have happened. On the plus side though, she did stop for a minute or so, which allowed us to recuperate and take some photos.

#7- After several of us verbally criticized her on the vehicle; she didn’t apologize to any of us. In face, when we brought it up to her, she ignored us. GRRR

Women drivers

(Now that'll probably start an argument in itself - can't you tell that I wrote it tongue-in-cheek  )

On a positive note, its a good job that you've ridden before

Please tell me that you reported her to management or someone... Hopefully, there were no "first-timers" on that vehicle... or their view of the safari will be forever marred. It's a shame that Disney allows someone with that obvious lack of skill to start driving in the first place.

Does Disney utilize "secret guests" for quality control? I know many restaurants and retail places have the secret shoppers.

I'd be more concerned with, you know, potential dead animals

Yes, she should've been reported.

I doubt the animals were in any danger.... they can probably sense a crazy human driving like a maniac and get out of the way and hide.

I have heard that management occasionally goes around the park in plain clothes.

Come on people. It might not have been her fault, she might have been drunk! In that case good thing she didnt overshoot the rickity old bridge completely.

I bypassed Guest Relations and spent 10 minutes after checking my dignity (to make sure it was intact) looking for a blue ID in the surrounding area.

*sees Blue ID*
ME: where do you work?
MANAGER: merchandise
ME: Go away

*sees another blue ID*
ME: hi, may I look at your pins?
MANAGER *holds up lanyard*
ME: *snags ID and stares at it* ENTERTAINMENT!!! BLAST!!!

*sees another blue ID*
ME: are you attractions??!!?!?
MANAGER: yes, sir
ME: Africa Attractions?
MANAGER: How may I help you?
ME: My saviour!!!!

So sorry to hear you had such an awful experience. But just curious, how and when do they train drivers for the safari? Obviously you can learn your lines sitting at home but do they take new drivers out after hours or before hours to drive to course? I would assume a new driver has to pass some kind of competency test before they would let them actually drive a load of guests.

They just take out guestless vehicles for the driver to practice...

The same thing with Jungle Cruise, Living with the Land, etc. :)

Ok Santa Tink... when do they do this? Do they do these practice runs during operating hours? Like could guests potentially see one of these empty boats or trucks looking up or down the course?

I have scene one during operating hours at Living with the Land. Empty boat... lady giving the spiel to no one.
