Question About the Haunted Mansion

I've heard that the Haunted Mansion isn't very scary and most older kids don't have a problem with it. I have one question. Does anything pop out at you? Or is most of the fright just the idea of what you see?

A couple of ghouls pop up in the attic and graveyard scenes, but you can see them before they "materialize."

Overall, the HM is a good-natured, creepy (not horrifying) attraction and should not be missed!

(Yeah, I admit, it's one of my favorites.)

The thing about the haunted mansion is that its narrated the whole time. There aren't the silent, total darkness, then BAM! loud noises and things popping out at you. They don't go for the cheap horror. Its not really horrifying at all, just cool and creepy. Its really mild, so much so my kids both enjoy it.

HM isn't really scary.
When designing the haunted mansion, the Imagineers had a choice: Go dark and scary or light-hearted fun. They went for the latter.

There are a few "pop up ghosts" but nothing extremly frightening.
Most little kids don't seem scared by it at all.
Well, I was. But guess what? That scared little three-year-old grew up into a big paranoid 14-year-old. :lookaroun :)

I still jump from time to time at the pop-up ghosts.... even when I know when it's coming and I'm prepared for it...

I'm just so jumpy!

Yup, I know how you feel  . Overall the attraction isn't scary though.

I agree about the Pop-up ghosts. They can surprise you, although not in themselves really that frightening.

The Hitchhiking Ghosts may freak out very young impressionable children just because of the shock value of it.(all of a sudden someone else in the car with you - but not really !)

My daughter's been riding it since she was seven and has always loved it. We both still occasionally jump when a ghoul jumps up, even though we know exactly where all of them are. She has a friend who rode at age four and is still terrified of it at age 13. I guess my best advice is listen to the child in question. If they are up for it, do it, but don't force them to ride til they are ready. I saw a horrible man brow-beating his son for being "too sissy" to ride once. Nothing is worth that, in my opinion.

Well......

There is one part where these "heads" pop up from behind gravestones and books etc, theres like 4 of them and they all happen in the same area. Not scary, little kids may be frightened, but above 5, i dont think so.... unless the kid is scared easily........

I never have actually jumped at the pop-up ghosts behind the tombstones, but my best friend does every time, just like you do, when she knows it's coming and when she's prepared for it. It's very funny actually, because instead of being scared I'm usually laughing at her. She will hold on to my arm when we get near the tombstones, and you can even hear them jumping near other people in front of you. And then when we get there, they jump, and she jumps and screams, and I just laugh

But I love the Haunted Mansion, it's one of my favorite rides. But as everyone elese already said, it's not really that scary.

HM is actually very scary. There's a rarely ridden second ride sequence where they take you through a Satanic ritual re-enactment.

Goats and pentagrams and sacrifice oh my!

Seriously though, its fairly tame. Except for those shaking spiders!!! Watch out!!!

Think of it as "frightning fun!" It's all about the special effects anyway. I once heard a mother explaining it to her child as "Mickey is just playing tricks on you." It's all good fun.

Our daughter is almost 7. She is more scared of the "stretching room" at the beginning of the attraction than anything else.......

My wife and I do not have children, yet, but I don't think there is anything really scary about the ride. I mean it's dark and I could see why a child might not like that. I go mostly now just to watch all the detail of the ghosts etc. Besides the fact that it is still a classic ride. I think sometimes the people who work there are more scary than the ride.

The first two times I went on it, I closed my eyes through the whole thing. But only because I was very young & I didn't know what to expect. So I wasn't taking any chances. But once I forced myself to open my eyes, I saw that it wasn't that scary at all. Most of the ghosts are pretty funny. If your kids are afraid of the dark, they may be a bit freaked out at some parts. The end of the stretching room sequence is pretty scary for some kids. But it shouldn't be that big of a problem. I have yet to see or hear anyone freak out during the ride.

Thanks. I'd only been on it when I was 8 and I had my eyes closed the whole time, so I couldn't really remember what it was like. I asked because my little cousin is going to Walt Disney World soon and she sort of gets scared easily, but I think she'll be okay with this.
