Question about communicating in the park.

Ok technically, electronically challenged person here. My Dh has a cell phone but I do not. I want something to communicate with him in case we get split up. So I don't really want a cell phone, what choices do I have. I guess a walkie-talkies, but (OK here is the dumb part) are there walkie talkies that do text messaging?

I hate those walkie-talkie things.. a few years ago they were ALL OVER the parks and you would hear a "chirp-chirp" every other second. I was ready to scream! Are you guys planning on splitting up? If you do, maybe you could just have a "meet you -here- at -this- time" sort of meeting place.

You will have to get a cell phone or forget it.

Sprint has a minimum use plan for about $29/month.
You still get a lot of minutes.
That's what we have since we use the cell phone only ocassionally and for emergencies.

One place to look is www.letstalk.com
It's easy to compare plans on that site.

The only other way you could communicate while in the parks is to leave voice mail messages on your room phone.
That would mean though that you would have to call the room and, without a cell phone, you would have to keep finding and using a pay phone in the parks.

Good luck.

You can use the walkie talkies...but i don't know of any that have text messaging due to the identifications required for it. If you don't want to get a cell phone then the best thing to do would make plans on when to be somewhere and not communicate in between.

You could always try a set of walkie talkies that get fairly good range. My son and I did that when we were driving 2 cars from FL to CA to save on cell phone minutes and we found a set at Circuit City that had a range of about a mile or so. They were pretty small too. They were a godsend on the drive home with a moving van because we ended up driving through a hurricane and lost cell signal. That was several years ago, but there has to be something like that out there still I would think.

If you use walkie talkies be ready to overhear intimate conversations from others who are also using them.

Have you considered a pre-paid cell phone that you could just use for your trip/ Several companies have these now, and no contract is necessary.

Walkie Talkies would be OK but they seem to big.
lol Don't think I'll be talking intimate to my DH in parK!

While I hate cell phones they are really the best way to go. Check with your hubbues provider, many offer a family plan for about $10.00 a month and you share minutes. I added the text messages to our plan because I feel its the most unobtrusive way to comunicate at the parks. I hate people on cell phones at Disneyland/WDW. Yapping on the rides and while your waiting in line. I even had a girl jump up in Carasel of progress to rum out and take a call, she walked back in after they closed the door just as the building started to move and caused an E stop and the whole time we were off by one scene.

Hi, BIGNORMSMOM here. We used the walkie talkies driving down when we traveled with our son and his family and they had a two mile range on them. They are not very big, about 3 inches and they hook right on your belt. We then gave them to our youngest son and he and our grandson were able to communicate with us all over the park. Yes, you can pick up other peoples conversations on them, but they are also nice to use at the motel when one set of people are at the pool or eating. Although I would highly recommend the prepaid phones. They are easy to operate and if you don't use it much a $20.00 a month card would probably be sufficient for you. Go to WalMart or Costco and look into it.

Um, I'm surprised nobody else posted this one:

My sons each have a Nintendo DS. It's a handheld video gaming thing that is more like a PDA then a video game, IMO. Anywhoo, there are little text/chat features. You can handwrite your messages with the stylus or us it to "type" them in. I have no idea how far the range is on them, though. I was just amazed when they were in seperate rooms "messaging" each other from handheld game things. LOL!

Best advice is to not split up. I can't really see most people having many occasions where they do. I don't take a phone to the parks, its just another thing to make sure I don't lose on a ride.

If you do end up using walkie talkies, please don't become one of these people (heard all too often in the parks):

Person A (distorted voice over the walkie talkie with volume cranked): zxwqkwxwzxqkUUUMMEEETUUSSzvqkkzvvqzvzHHHEERE!!!!!

Person B (standing in queue yelling into the walkie talkie at point blank range): WHAT????!!!!!!!!!!!

Person A (sounding even louder and more distorted): zqkkxkwkkqkxIIIIIIIIzqkkxxCCCAAANNNTzqkknxUUUNDERRRSTANDzkqwwnYYYOOOOUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Person B (also yelling louder now even closer to the microphone): WWWWHHHHAAAAAATTTT???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Person A (amazingly even louder and more distorted than before): zzzqwxqkqwkkSSSSSSSSTTTOOOPkwzqzqxqYYELLLLLINNGGqxwzxqxqxqzqwwxzqkqxkqw!!!!

Etc, etc, ad nauseum....

Remember this tip: Don't yell into your walkie talkie because no one will be able to understand you. It doesn't matter how loud things are around you or how much trouble you're having hearing the other person. Yelling only makes it worse. And PLEASE keep the volume on your walkie talkie turned DOWN. No one else wants to hear it and you will only look like a big .

flares work wonders - and if you have had an argument, flares are a kinda one way communication tool. Just dont set one off during wishes.

....or you could just by a prepaid/pay as you go MOBILE phone :)
