'Quarter' family going to Disney World
They saved $1,310 worth of quarters

KENTWOOD, Mich. (LIN-TV) - A West Michigan family is on its way to Walt Disney World after cashing in thousands of state quarters.

The Powers family of Kentwood has spent the past decade collecting the money from the U.S. Mint 50 State Quarters Program, meticulously rolling them, by state.

They saved 5,240 quarters, totaling $1,310. They will use the money for admission to the theme park during their week-long vacation to Orlando.

The family said while it's a cute story, it is also a lesson to their children about savings.

When the couple started collecting the quarters, they only had two young kids. Now they have three, ages 15, 11 and 7.

This whats it all about.
Classic anything it takes attitude.
Im proud of them.
And, even in this "bad economy" folks are choosing not to participate in the recession.
This story is a good lesson for everyone.
Hope they have a GREAT time in the "world".

I got a couple of quarters can I go with them wait....I only have 8 quarters :lookaroun I hope we have free dining :lookaroun

This is a great story. They did a great thing by showing there kids the value of a dollar...or should I say quarters. This will teach there kids to respect money which alot of kids today dont. Like my 13 year old (almost 14) who doesnt take care of her things and says "what it only cost 20 dollars" (or 50 -100 it doesnt matter) yeah my 20 dollars:mad: or my favorite "what its old anyway" (when I bought it last month)

You Know what Im going to save my 8 quarters and teach my daughter a lesson. Im going to save my change for our next trip to disney world.

Well our next, next trip we already booked this year wohooo free dining

Wow. We too save change. Every time I get change back at a store I had it to one of the kids for our "Disney bank". We have enough saved since last Sept for all 4 of us to eat at Hoop Dee Doo. We're pretty excited about it. I'm hoping to have even more saved by the time we go (Oct). Who knows what we'll do with it.

That's an amazing story! And that is a crazy amount of quarters. I can't believed they hand rolled them all. I would've had to visit the automated machine for all those.

I'm just sitting here reading it and thinking about how many mini m&m containers that would be.

I save change, too. I can usually gather up around $250-300 in a year's time. I guess if I waited a decade between trips like the people in the original story , I could go for free BUT I CAN"T WAIT THAT LONG!!

Anywho, no trip to the world for me this year - all my change is earmarked for Ireland in January.

The last couple of years we've saved $500 for each trip by putting all our change in our piggy bank. Then we roll it ourselves to save on the fees (we used the free machine at Commerce bank and felt like it short changed us...). It's one more step in our getting ready for Disney ritual!

I can't believe a story like that made the news! We did pretty much the same thing, but made no fanfare of it. We saved all coins, not just quarters, and we didn't need to roll them because a bank in our area (TD Bank, formerly Commerce Bank) has a machine that counts them for free even if you don't have an account there.

It's shocking how SMALL over a thousand dollars of coins is. We saved using a see-through plastic pound tub that formerly held 3 pounds of animal crackers from BJ's wholesale club. It doesn't even fill it halfway!

I NEVER spent any change, and often bought extra change to put in there, as a savings plan.

I never thought of contacting the media before by trip 6 weeks ago! :hammer:
