any fellow pumpkin carvers out there? i look forward to Halloween every year just to carve pumpkins! i even thought about trying to carve other things (watermelons, anything with a thick, durable skin) during the year, just to satisfy myself. has anyone here ever tried that?
anyway, what i was going to ask....i've always wanted to try the sculpting thing, where you don't carve out whole chunks, just cut designs into the skin. i've never done this before, but dad and i bought a sculpting kit with the tools, patterns, instructions and such. so what i was wondering, is it fairly easy to do? and also, how long does the pumpking last after doing it? i know with regular carving it depends on temperature, skin type of the pumpkin, and design of the carving (the less you carve, the longer it lasts) i image with sculpting, the pumpkin would last a lot longer since it remains completely in tact, but i thought i would ask you fine people about it to make sure :D

Love to carve the pumpkin with the kiddies. We are gonna try for a comical Jack-O-Lantern this year. Don't wanna scare the kids. The kids like to rip the guts out... EWWWWW.

I've done the sculpting before. It works pretty good and I thinks it's fairly easy to do. Just take your time and have some patience.
There is a specila pumpkin dunk mixture that they sell in
Wall Mart type stores that you dunk the pumpkin in and it helps preserve it so it lasts longer. have fun!

My dad does the pumkin' carvin' every year, he's very artistic, but he makes me rip the guts out

We usually don't make a face on the pumpkin, we usually do a scene, last year we had a witch flying over the moon, and we painted a face on another. Don't know exactly what we are going to do this year...

My family is the obnoxious people on the block, the ones with the biggest pumpkins available for sale (that dwarf some small children) and then we carve and cut-out whimsical and creepy patterns.

One is always the classic face with some alterations, then one has some sort of halloween scene, and then mine is always something artistic. I've done minimalist and cubism before. I wonder what i'll do this year....

At the end of the night, when every other pumpkin on the block has been smashed to bits, ours are still intact.. we haven't quite figured that one out...

thanks, Pam! i'm extremely slow with everything, so i don't think i'll have a problem with it! we've tried the pumpkin dunk mixture before, but i don't think we really saw a big difference in how long the pumpkins lasted.

dad buys the annual pumpkin masters kit. they come out with awesome patterns every year (you can buy them in Wal-Mart type stores) the way they tell you to carve the pumpkins is really hard (take their paper patterns, tape them to the pumpkin, poke holes outlineing the pattern, then carve while connecting the dots.) dad just shrinks and copies all the patterns onto a trasparentsy then puts them on a projector and traces them onto the pumpkin with a black sharpie. works much better, and you can fit the pattern to the size of the pumpkin instead of the other way around. you can visit their website here: http://pumpkinmasters.com/ and sometimes they'll have patterns that are internet exclusives. and definately check out the contest winners from last year! it's amazing what patterns people can come up with! the patterns on the media page are quite amazing as well!

btw, Rob, that cubism pumpkin sounds great! got any pictures of it?

Pumpkin carving is fun. Last year, I found a pumpkin farm near where I lived that had any size pumpkin for only $1. Needless to say, I bought a few wheelbarrows full. Tons of pumpkins to carve. I tend to to stick to the classic pumpkin carving because I really don't have the patience for the new artistic type stuff. It just takes way too long and I really enjoy looking at a "classic" pumpkin...takes me back to the days when I could trick-or-treat.
