Pulling kids from school?

Am I bad parent for pulling my kids from school for 6-7 days? They're in K and 1st. I'm getting some anxiety over this for some reason!

As long as your school district will allow it. Our school district you have 5 unexcused absences a school year any more and you automatically fail. Also you can't make up work for an unexcused absence so pulling them out for a vacation will fail them for the six weeks. So around here it's really not a choice.
Where we live, a vacation is an 'excused' absence. So, any time a parent notifies the school that the child will be out (for any reason) is an excused absence.

My kids are both in high school now, but they will still miss a day or two for our vacations. The airlines know the school calendar; I am literally saving around $600 by having them miss 1 day of school this year. (Well, on flights - we do need food and lodging for that extra day - worth it!)

And what’s the point of that policy?

Does it create more effective humans? I would guess it does not.

I’d move if I were you

It is financial motivation I'm sure because the school district does not get paid if the student is not there, I usually take her out for a couple days for our Thanksgiving trip but I feel bad about it because i have to lie and say she is sick the Thursday and Friday before Thanksgiving week but I feel bad for lying.

At the K & 1st grade levels I'd say no problem, just run it by the school for the "excused vs. non-excused" aspect. And no, you're not being a bad parent for taking your kids out of school. We took our son (now 36) out several times mid-year and he's no worse the wear for it. I will admit when we took him out it was usually for 4 days which we combined with consecutive 3 day and 2 day weekends (so he got 9 days for 4 days off). He also took some homework along. He got his 4 yr degree and is a firefighter engineer.

I don't have children. But many friends have asked me about this and I've told them to take them out of school so they can go when it's slower down there. They have all said it's a great idea and would do it again. One took 2 high schoolers and they were able to do their homework online at night.

My girls went to private Catholic schools also, and we did not ask permission...we TOLD the school that we were taking them. My job at the time dished out vacation based on seniority; I was low-man on the totem pole and had slim pickings as to vacation...October, mainly, which is fine, because my birthday is in October. We took them out for a week, five school days, and we camped at FW. One day was set aside for the assignments that their teachers gladly gave for the week, and we were able to lounge at our campsite while they slaved away at their schoolwork:cool:
One teacher, their Spanish teacher, actually gave my daughter an assignment to do at Epcot...she had to order something to eat at the Mexico pavilion in Spanish, and I was to get video, which I did. A+.
They were only allowed to miss five days, so if they even tried to play sick, or decide to miss school for something else, the very real threat of missing the Disney trip was in full play.
Bottom line, even if your kids are in public school, you as a taxpayer still pay for them to attend. They're your kids...take them.

And please don't try the "educational aspects" of a Disney trip excuse...

I don’t agree with you very often.. but I am SO GLAD to see someone write this.
I second it!

OP- I take my kid out of school every year, go and have fun. :). They can make up the work when you get back.

Just please. make sure with your school before you do it that work can be made up, most Texas school districts won't excuse a vacation.

All the schools around me closed last year for the eagles Super Bowl parade. No your good

We recently had a school fundraiser where if we hit our goal, then the school would be closed the day after Super Bowl.

We do it every year, so far have earned the day off every year!

We're doing it :) they'll miss 6 days. My kids go to a private catholic school.
Got the all clear from administration and their teachers. The week we're going their school will be doing terra nova testing (grades 5-8) so it's a down week anyways for the younger guys.

Awesome! Have a wonderful time!

The reality is not every ocupaton can take vacation when the kids are off. We have done it at all grade levels and I would not even hesitate in elementary school. Now in high school my kids did all their missed work BEFORE we would go and 9/10 time they were farther ahead then the class when they got back especially in their AP classes. It was hard on them but they also knew the only other option was no vacation at all. I am also blessed that my kids are academic warriors and stay on top of everthing on ther own I really wish schools would look at trimesters and get rid of the long extended summer break and use the time off during the year.

Trimesters are so much better at avoiding burnout or overload.

But people make all kindsa excuses not to do that.

For instance: here in lovely New Jersey they wouldn’t because they say the jersey shore generates 10 billion a year in additional business/revenue. Which seems
Legit.

But what do they do? Have a 10 month calendar that limits that seasons potential. Days off every week. Closed for religious holidays that affect 5% of the school population. A teacher “convention” that none go to because it’s retained as a bargaining chip. “Catholic week” for ten days in the spring.

Nuts.

I agree with them. Summer is summer. It’s time for pools, quick getaways, weekday adventures, amusement parks, staying out late, summer camps, etc etc etc etc. Kids and Parents need a consecutive break.

Our school year is 3 trimesters.. that’s good enough. They have work to do during the summer, but being out of a formal classroom is nice.

I don’t...the weather is changing...the United States is the only country in the developed world to profess “dumb is good” and not adjust to it. Vast changes into traditional seasons even in the last 20 years. Getting worse as well.

Frankly. I’ll leave it there.

I also don’t understand how you say you’re against trimesters...then say you have them and support them in the same sentence. You should run for office.
