Wow, that must have been an impressive storm, even for Florida standards, given that Disney usually has lightning rods on the roof of every structure on property every few feet it seems.

I must say that it was one of the worst days for me at the mountain...

But I also must say I give props to some of my fellow CM all around T-land. There where day shift CM at the mountain till 4am trying to bring the ride back up to get it ready to open on time. But that didn't work out as some of you know the ride didn't open until early this afternoon.

But the storm was crazy large, when I got home my power was out and there was flooding everywhere.

Crazy times....but it got pulled together.

Doesn't space mountain have lighting rods, or something to prevent such an occurance? You would think so. The whole building looks like a giant conductor.

yeah the building does, it gets struck all the time and we are usually fine.

I was there last night too

I was there yesterday afternoon when the thunderstorm blew through. My DH, DS, and ML were in Tomorrowland around 5pm. We went on Buzz then over to COP because we thought an typical Fl afternoon storm was comming in. We did COP and when we got out, it was pouring. The Cast Members at the attraction were nice and let everyone stay under the porch area of COP just as long as you were not up against the wall of COP. We had left DS stroller in the Buzz stroller parking with our umberllas and poncho. We watched it rain for a while but we had PS at Chef Mickeys for DS 2nd B-day and needed to get moving. We saw several lighting strikes beyond Tomorrowland and ToonTown. It was a bad storm but I didn't think it was that awful...I have seen worse in Tampa. My parents had come in to MK while we were in COP and got stuck in the shops in Main Street. When there was a small break in the rain my DS ran to get the umbrellas and poncho. Since the stroller had our name on it and was in a dry place we decided to leave the stroller there while we ate dinner at Chef Mickeys. We were coming back to MK for Wishes after dinner so we knew it would be safe. My DH came back with umbrellas and poncho. We used the poncho to cover DH because he had the camera bag and we all walked quickly through Tomorrowland; we saw flooding in certain areas and the CM were trying there best (when it was safe) to get the water moving. We kept moving towards Main Street and the exit to go to Chef Mickeys. We met up with my parents and made our way to the monorail station. The monrails seemed to be working on a normal schedule. We were able to make it to Chef Mickeys right at our PS time. I could tell when I checked in that lots of people were late so they were being extra magical and holding the PS for the late guests (there was a walk up guest before I checked in and the CM at the podium advised the guest that they were not taking any walk ups that evening) We could not tell what the weather was like after we went inside. After a great diner we went back to the MK for Philharmagic and Wishes (my parents and ML had not seen either yet) My DH went to Tomorrowland (via the Tomorrowland Terrace) to pick up our stroller while I took DS, ML and parents to Philarmagic. When I got to the hub I noticed that the Tomorrowland bridge was closed and that there were cast members with flashlights pointed at the ground on the bridge by the castle going to Cosmic Rays. I commented to my family that there must have been a lighting strike that disrupted the lighting in the hub area. We went on with our plans of seeing Philharmagic and Wishes. I just asked DH if he noticed anything diffrent when he returned to Tomorrowland to pick up the stroller (we met him a Philharmagic) and he said "No" but then asked him if there were other strollers in the Buzz stroller parking and he said "No"

Thats sad that it took out Tomorrowland for a sometime but it is FL and we do get Lighting strikes here....Seen them....been in a house when there was one just outside (hit the house's sprinker system)...so I am used to it.

Lightning rods, grounds or whatever are usually good protection but lightning is gonna do what it wants. Sometimes theirs just no defense.

Ya we were even talking about it over at DAK today.

It is scary, especially when thinking that during those types of storms Kilimanjaro is still going strong. But I guess that makes it more fun....... ya that's it.... fun.

Lightning is scary, whether in Orlando or elsewhere! A few years ago, a bolt took the top off our neighbors brick chimney, and it tripped all the GFCI circuits on the side of our house facing theirs!

Lightning rods can help direct the current away from sensitive devices, but when mother nature decides to throw a bolt, it may go somewhere other than where you'd expect!

The times that you have difficulty hearing something or the sound is muffled is for effect only
I thought this was due to either having a head cold, allergies, or just being tired.

My sister and her boyfriend just got to WDW yesterday and got stock on the boat going from MGM to Yacht Club! Since the storm was so bad, they didn't want to get out of the boat so they had to last it out! She said the boat drivers were doing Disney trivia to try and make everyone feel better!

They were supposed to head to Magic Kingdom tonight but I believe they are going to MGM again.

Any updates would be great so that I can let them know what's happening!

MGM is where I was heading from when the storm started to roll through the World, and at 1st I was stuck by the coca cola building out near the bus stops and there was a boat stuck at the dock there. And I could hear them keep making an anouncement from the speaker of the boat saying "they are stopped right now due to inclement weather."

Lighting Strike

We saw a HUGE strike from our cabin in Fort Wilderness. Did not make me feel good having to venture out to make our PS at The Trails End with the lightning and the trees all around. The rain was coming in sideways and an umbrella was pretty useless and no I didn't have a poncho. By 7:30 the rain had stopped and it was a beautiful night. Kinda glad we weren't at MK. Must have been Kinda spooky to see everything dark.

We had a great time at the campfire sing along after the storm.

The famous professional golfer, Lee Trevino, was struck by lightning on June 28, 1975 while playing in a PGA tournament at the Western Open in Oak Brook, IL. He survived the strike, but was hospitalized for several weeks. He fully recovered from the incident.

Later on the PGA tour, Lee was out on the course when a thunderstorm rolled into the area. Lee was seen on camera holding a golf club in a vertical position high over his head. People thought he was crazy! He seemed to be inviting lightning to strike him again!

When he had finished the course and was back in the club house, a reporter asked Lee, "Why did you hold that golf club over your head like a lightning rod?" Lee responded, "That was a one iron. No one can hit a one iron, not even God can hit a one iron!"

from http://www.infoplease.com/spot/lightning1.html

The other safe place is a car with the windows rolled up, as long as you don't touch any of the metal parts. If lightning strikes, the car's metal body will conduct the charge down to the ground—contrary to popular belief, the rubber of the wheels offers no protection.
