So I've paid off the cruise. Woot! :sohappy:

What are the pro's & con's to prepaying gratuities? How/when do I get the chance to prepay them?

TIA!!!

You can pay them any time by contacting your friendly travel agent. :D

I've started to prepay gratuities for my cruises. I just like not having to fork out all those extra bucks at the end of the cruise. Especially when I'm usually getting a large bill for everything I've just bought!

The only downside I can think of is that incredibly rare occasion where you wouldn't want to tip at least the recommended amount. That's not a problem, just more of an inconvenience. Guest services could get that corrected.

I pre=make envelopes with the recommended amount of cash. Then I take along about $50 in small bills as well.

That way I can adjust the tips as I see fit, and since I make the envelopes up before hand, it is not like getting hit with the big end of cruise tip out.

I would think the CM's would rather cash as well, but you never know.

That's true, they might prefer cash. I do bring cash and sometimes add to the prepaid amounts at the end of the cruise. I have had a few servers I wouldn't have given any more than the recommended amount, but never anyone I would have given less.

I always bring about $25 in ones to accommodate my children's love of room service.

We just charged the gratuities to our room on the last day. We always give the suggested amount, but we like to give more for special service so we like to wait until the last day to decide on the amount. It was super easy....on the last day we went to the guest service desk and they printed out coupons with the amounts and we gave those (in an envelope) to our servers and room steward that night.

Tammy, I am pretty sure I want to pre-pay my tips for my cruise. How do the servers and such know I pre-paid my tips? Is there a receipt or something I give them? Thanks!

Yes! Sometime before your last dinner onboard you will get 4 envelopes in your room. One for each person you are expected to tip. If you prepaid, whether onboard at guest services, or before you even got on the ship, you will also get little receipts with amounts on them to put in the envelopes. If not you can just put cash in them.

Then you can just give each person the envelope that night.:)
