They didn’t announce anything. They just put it on their schedule as a secret project. Disney social media didn’t hype this up either. The hype came from others outside of Disney hyping it up.

That IS hyping it up. You put the words "secret project" and also say that you're going to announce it a couple of days in advance of the panel, people are going to assume it's something major. Disney isn't stupid; they knew how people would react to that.

I still wasn't expecting anything parks related, though.

Let's not fool ourselves here. Disney very much wanted hype around this. You don't call it 'Secret Project' and leave it lingering for two weeks. If Disney really thought fans weren't going to think it would be a 'cool' announcement (not a new park or anything) then they're deluding themselves and they need some new people in PR and Communications to tell them don't advertise something if it's not going to have an impact.

Announcing it a couple days before the panel does just that.

No, that literally does the opposite. You don't announce a panel called "Secret Project" days before your massive conference, where big announcements are expected.

If it was major why wouldn’t you put it on the main stage and not announce it until the panel happens? Announcing it before hand isn’t hyping it up to me nor does that make it seem extra major. Like you said Disney isn’t stupid. They got people to talk about it but we all should know by now that you shouldn’t expect huge stuff most of the time.

The panel isn’t even scheduled to go in the main/large room. That should have told you something on its own. And they announced it to media only.
