Potter vs Mansion

Has anyone noticed in the opening scene from the new Harry Potter movie that the Mansion in the movie looks somewhat like the WDW haunted mansion? The woodwork inside and the details on the roof.

ALSO, the "caretaker" is very familiar too.

Identical? no... strangely similar...yes, IMO.

As much as I love the HM, I could never bring myself to watch Harry Potter to find out. :animwink:

Your loss; the Harry Potter films have been consistently entertaining and well-done. Those who scream things like, "It's kiddie stuff" obviously have never read the books or seen the films. If you haven't read the books, I highly suggest you do.
As for the comparisons, I can't say that I noticed any similarities, but then I suppose I wasn't watching for them, either.

I didn't notice any similarities, but the beginning was very chilling and the music fit perfectly. From the opening frame, it is evident that it is not a children's movie.

I didn't realize my original post was calling the Harry Potter movie "Kiddie stuff." I guess you didn't see the animated wink at the end of my post either. Read it again. It's just that I don't care for fantasy kind of movies. I'm a horror movie type of guy.

You are definitely not alone. I can't get my husband to sit through them either  My mom and I usually see the HP movies together, since my dad won't go either. We're going to see it this afternoon.

Saw HP:GOF last night. Didn't really notice any similarities between Riddle House and HM. All I saw was a stately old English Manor house.

Great Movie though. Definitely need to either have read the book or seen the other three movies or you won't get it.

I didn't notice the mansion, but I did totally notice the caretaker similarities, holding the light and looking scared. Probably just a coincidence though.

Harry Potter Attraction

Not to go off too much on a tangent, but does anyone else think that an agreement for a Harry Potter and/or Lord of the Rings attraction would be great for Disney World? If they really want to get the mythical creatures side of Animal Kingdom going, wouldn't a Harry Potter attraction, complete with a Quidditch ride featuring dragons, the Forbidden Forest, Hagrid, dementors and hippogriffs be amazing?

Similarly, a Lord of the Rings attraction featuring orcs, nazgul, shadowfax, elves, balrogs and trolls would be an amazing addition.

It seems that if Star Wars, Twilight Zone, Pixar, and Indiana Jones can be at the World, how hard can it be to arrange an agreement for Harry Potter and/or Lord of the Rings?

Any scuttlebutt if licensing agreements with Rowling or the Tolkien family are in the works? Or perhaps the eerie similarity with the Haunted Mansion is a foreshadowing of things to come, along with the other Harry Potter movies appearing on ABC and the Family Channel.

I have not seen HP & GOF but I certainly plan to this weekend (by the way...thanks everyone for not posting "spoilers") :animwink: And yes, I for one would LOVE to see a Harry Potter attraction BUT of all the Christian mothers I've spoken with, I've found that MOST of them DO NOT want their children exposed to the so-called "Black Magic" of the whole Harry Potter genre...I have read ALL of the HP books AND seen all the HP movies (well except for GOF)...I see ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with these books OR films!!! If I DID have children, I would not have a problem at all with them reading these books and seeing these films!!! I'm also not sure if Disney wants that so-called "black magic" connection either, but again I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. :D

Because Disney does not have the rights to Harry Potter, Warner Bro's does. I seriously doubt that with the success of HP that WB would give it up, and not put something in 6 flags. Lord of the Rings I have no idea though, I heard there was something preventing that from happening too, but I have no idea.

There is really no connection at all between the opening scene in GoF and Mansion. To suggest there is, you would then have to go into every ghost story and spooky situation from every film where an older gentleman holds a lantern and say that those are Mansion references too.

As far as the movie, besides the completely unnecassary Dragon chase sequence and the absence of John Williams music, it was a pretty gosh darn enjoyable film.

with lord of the rings you have New line and the Tolkien family constaly bickering on who owns the rights. And I do believe another film company also owns partial rights. New line had to do quite a lot of fighting to make the trilogy a reality.

I think you have spend way too much time on this site. I really didn't see any similarity, just a creepy old house like described in the book. The movie was good though, I loved the dark tone to it. Very true to the book.

Please don't start this tired discussion again.

I think the closest we would get to a new fantasy film related attraction at WDW would be Narnia (I'm talking about something bigger than the upcoming walk-through attraction), since Disney is releasing it.

Ok, soap box time. The number of people against Harry Potter compared to those for Harry Potter is really small. The majority of population is for Harry. Evidence: Book sales and Box Office figures. If these hardcore religious types would give Harry a chance, they would see that overlying theme of the series is good against evil. Black magic is feared in the wizarding world! Most of these people aren't the types that go to Walt Disney World anyway, they go on religious retreats. This is directed to the overtly religious types not to DisneyFanLS

As for who owns the rights to Harry Potter, it is first and foremost J.K. Rowling. She decides who gets to use her characters and for what. Warner Bros. has the rights to adapt her books into films. Along with that comes certain marketing & product rights. Theme park rights are probably still up for grabs. Six Flags is out of the question with the only contenders being Disney and Universal. If I'm not mistaken, Universal prefers to use their own "properties" for attractions. Disney welcomes outside "properties". ie: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Twilight Zone, Aerosmith, etc. If Disney wants the rights and could prove to Jo that they have an awesome idea, I don't see any reason why she wouldn't grant them the theme park rights.

What have we just learned? Well in summary, Harry Potter is not evil, people who think Harry Potter is evil probably don't go to Walt Disney World, and if Disney wants rights to make a Harry Potter ride, they could, in theory, get them.

Thanks, STR8FAN2005 for the answer I was hoping for. I'm only a small tawn lawyer, but your analysis of the ownership rights makes good legal sense from my humble point of view.

My family would probably spend more than a partial day at Animal Kingdom during our annual trip if HP and L of the R had attractions there. To make Animal Kingdom a full day park for more people, some bigger attraction(s) with book and movie tie-ins would fit the bill. It wouldn't be cheap, but it would certainly help stem the mass exodus after the Jammin' Jungle Parade if you could do these new big rides one more time, and then grab supper at the Hogwarts great banquet hall.

And can you imagine the merchandising? Cha-ching.
