PotC Hidden Skull?

While riding PotC today I noticed something rather odd that totally startled me..in the scene right before the drop with the skeleton at the helm of the ship, I glanced over to where the talking skull formerly was and noticed, what else, a static skull in that same spot, clearly visible with some sort of sheer fabric draped over it. Has this always been there? Is this the original talking skull they never bothered to remove? I'm usually pretty observant about things like this but have never seen it before.

I am... very familiar with that ride... and I'm almost 100% sure that it wasn't there until recently? Hmmm...

It could be that the skeleton head from the preshow area of the old Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow show at Hollywood Studios was installed into the attraction. I noticed on a previous visit that some of the treasures from Jack's cave in the show were moved to the ride after the show had closed.

Gosh, I hope it isn't coming back. It was a very repetitive warning that a drop was coming. Over, and over and over, really broke the mood in my opinioin. I will consent to a trade though, lose the mermaid singing and turn the waterfall effect into a just a waterfall (no character projection) and I'll take the safety skull back.

I would have all three gone but that's just me.

Interesting you mention it. When we rode last week, there was a light pointed to the spot where the old talking skull used to be. I thought it was a show light that someone had neglected to turn off. There wasn't a skull there, however, so it sounds like a change might be in the works.

Forgive me if this is slightly off topic but could somebody give me a run down on the history of WDW's talking skull? I thought I remember seeing it in 2004/2005. Am I mistaken? When was it removed and why?

It should have still been there in 04 and 05. It was apparently removed during the refurbishment when they added the movie characters (Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones, Barbossa). So 2006 was when it was removed.

Why it was removed is another question, one I don't know the answer to. All other versions of the ride still have the skull, including the brand new and original Shanghai version.

Anyways, interested to hear there may be some merit to this given what people claim to have seen. It's a nostalgic thing and i'll admit i'd smile if I saw it again. Though I also admit I don't feel the ride was negatively impacted by its removal. Some would probably argue its removal helped the atmosphere of the caves, compared to where it's located in the other versions of the ride. I would like to see it again though.

While we're here I'll peep in that I emailed Bob Chapek about how you can't hear the audio of the Spanish soldiers in the queue line anymore. They said the Imagineers are always at work! What a response!

WDI doesn't want you to hear them. It's something that differentiates the ride from the DL Version thus in the minds of California-based Imagineering is no good.
