Post Something You Miss

Of all the narrations on SSE, I miss Walter Cronkite's the most. Vic Perrin was under rated.

My first visit to E.P.C.O.T. Center was just a few days after it opened, so I know I heard Mr. Perrin at least once. But the first SSE narrator that I remember was Walter Cronkite ("Behold, the majesty of the Sistine Ceiling!").

When you drive in from Dallas, you take I-75 at Lake City and then branch off on the turnpike. You used to be able to pick up Disney Radio shortly after hitting I-75 heading south.

Hmmm, We drove straight down 75 from Atlanta and I don't remember ever being able to pick it up till we got south of Ocala because one of the broadcast locations was the WDW welcome center. It could be it started further north but my parents didn't want to listen to it any more than they had to.

When did they stop doing that?

Oh good grief, I'm assuming somewhere around 20-25 years ago at this point. I can't remember the last time I heard it. It would be awesome if someone could dig up the audio loop from that station online somewhere.

All I can tell you is that I used to listen to it just after turning south on I-75. My understanding at the time was that there was a series of low power transmitters that ran all up and down Florida. They had a big billboard that said "Tune to ???? and listen to Disney Radio" (don't remember what the frequency was).

Yeah, we're both on the same page here, we both just have different memories on exactly where it started. I wouldn't doubt that it started around Lake City and my parents just tried to hold off listening to it till Ocala. Its also possible that it was just hard for us to pick up north of there because the transmitters were spaced too far and the signal dropped out too much. Either way its a significant part of my childhood Disney memories and I do miss it. I wish I could play it for my son, but honestly I can just stream WDW stuff thru my phone the whole trip and get virtually the same effect.
