My fiance and I will be staying at the POR next April for our honeymoon and he loves to fish. I saw that you can fish here with a cane pole and I was curious to see if others has done this as well and if it was worth it??

Probably expense and boring to cane pole fish. All you are going to catch are bream and blue gill for the most part. If he brings his one fishing gear, he can walk the banks and fish for bass. I am not sure if Disney allows it, but they don't stop it. If you go that route, be sure to have a FL fishing license. It is costly if caught.

Have done it and it's fun if you just want to fill some time. We didn't catch anything. If you want to have some fun, book a guided fishing excursion. Have done it three times and it's a blast.

Fishing on property is definitely not allowed if you are not part of a Guided Fishing Excursion.

All Walt Disney World® Resort Guided Fishing Excursions include:

An experienced guide
Rod and reel
Tackle
Artificial and live bait
Beverages
One year BASS membership

Also you do not need a Florida Fishing liscense since this is private property.

I do suggest that if you have someone in your party that you book one of the excursions for them. These programs are all catch and release programs.

If they want to be able to keep the fish they catch, there are numerous programs off property that they can contact to set up fishing excursions.

DH has done the guided fishing excursion before, and then as a family we also tried out the cane pole fishing. We didn't catch a thing, and it was dissapointing for DH as he loves to CATCH fish, dangling a line in the water for half an hour is not as fun as actually catching fish while out on a boat in front of the contemporary or MK.

Did the excursion on our honeymoon while my bride did a spa treatment. We pulled up right by where the ferry docks. It was non stop for about an hour. Every time you castes out. Bass after bass after bass. It was funny watching guys wives having to drag them off the ferry. :ROFLOL:

We did the cane pole fishing at POR a couple of years ago. Our three boys fished the entire time and caught nothing. It was the one spot/time in all of WDW that bugs were actually a nuisance, too (there may have even been mosquitoes! ).

They stock the cane pole pond, however I have seen a number of river otters in there, so basicly the stock fish becomes otter food.

The cane poles are just that, a cane pole with a fishing line tied to it - no reel. If you go later than say 10 AM the sun is right on the water in front of the docks and all the fish have gone into the shade under the structure. However you don't have enough line to get under the structure. It's fun for kids to mess around with and yank a few fish out, but as far as any serious fishing goes - no, not really. It only costs a few bucks though.
