Port Orleans French Quarter

For the first time we're staying in Port Orleans French Quarter for 9 nights, 10 days.

I've read some about it, but do you have anything else to share? Also, should I request staying in a particular area (numbered building) or just let them choose. Any of your suggestions or "beware!!" would be incredibly helpful.

I am extremely grateful for everyone's information on wdwmagic!

we've stayed there 3 times with a 4th trip coming the week after thanksgiving. we love the relaxed atmosphere, that it still has plenty of disney theming, short walk from any room to main pool/bus stop/food court/little store so don't stress over what room they might put you in. our first stay (and maybe the 2nd) they had our resort sharing a bus with riverside but not since then so having a small resort and not sharing a bus line...fantastic! the epcot deluxe resorts (dolphin, swan, boardwalk, yacht, and beach club) share the same bus line so it can take FOREVER to get back from the mk making all those stops, especially if you're staying at boardwalk which is always the last drop off...but little old moderate pofq gets it's own (love it). the room we stayed in last fall had already undergone it's refurb, the building next to ours was being worked on at that time so they're probably all done if not close to it by now.

One last thing...I think its the last stop on the Dme so it seems to take FOREVER to get there!!

That is one drawback....did DME one time and my flight got in late evening....didn't get to FQ until LATE. won't do that again, I like to have a rental anyways to go off property if I wish to a grocery for snacks or dinner.

Pioneering the Universe Within!
I actually just booked POFQ for my trip this summer. I much prefer it to POR, which is just too massive for me (and I can't help but feel like I'm staying at a nice Holiday Inn while I'm there).

The only downside to POFQ is the DME. It's the very last stop. If you get in late, as I usually do, it can be very frustrating.

The week after Thanksgiving is a great time to go. Light crowds and the whole place is done up for Christmas. It gets cold at night and dark early But you can have a great time if you pack the right clothes and make good plans!

I've stayed at Riverside/Dixie Landings a lot since 1998 and have had parts of our party stay at FQ some years. It seems nice. I will say this it is less spread out and has faster bus service most of the time. That said, it seems to us to be a bit less quiet, and having eaten at both food courts, we prefer the greater room and selection at POR.

I think we would try FQ were they to reopen the shuttered restaraunt and may just do so anyway if management continues to raise the prices for rooms at POR.

Both are nice halves of the same resort with nice decor, ameneties, and location, especially for the price.

I must ask, however, why it seems some people seem to make a hobby out of bashing Riverside-is that really necessary?

FQ this trip will be my first, but I really loved Riverside, and would have been happy to stay there if they had updated the rooms. I know it's bigger, but it's spread out well to provide some privacy and theme is really nice, so I don't know why people bash it.

May family and I will be there end of May/early June and we are very excited. Seems that all the rooms are decent. I just want one that is not facing a parking lot! Anyone ever actually walk to the quiet pools at Riverside? Know if the Lagoon at FQ ever gets too croweded that that might be a good move?
Love the parking lot view, building 4. We always drive so unload and load is easy. It's a straight shot to the bus stop. It's a straight shot to the side entrance to the food court, and its just a left turn away from the pool. :D
Also, the landscaping is really nice and the parking lot really isn't that visable depending on the room. Oh yeah, we always request ground floor and have been lucky to get it every time.
To the OP, there was another thread just like this one only a week or so ago. It went on like for 4 pages and I don't think that more than three people liked another moderate better.

Just some clarifications here ---

First, I love POFQ, and have stayed there 11 times now -- it is the only resort I stay at anymore at WDW -- love it....

Second -- it is NOT always DME's last stop - in fact, on at least half of my trips it has been the First Stop -- those are computer managed to change routes depending on the particular resorts and number of people they are dropping off and their DVC needs. Because the POFQ DME is lumped in with OKW and SS DVC resorts, the routes frequently change.

Third -- you can hear Illuminations and MK's fireworks from ALL of the resort buildings, no matter which floor or building you are in. You can actually SEE them from some of the buildings.

Fourth -- there are no parking lot views....the buildings are angled in such a way that you basically get courtyard or water views. I suppose there are probably a few rooms that get views of sides of the parking lots, but not for the most part because of the way the buildings are designed. In fact, the views from CB and POR tend to have MOSTLY parking lot views...not so at POFQ.

Fifth -- I have stayed in about every building with every type of "view option" you can get -- they are all pretty much the same. Because the resort is designed with wrap-around walkways, none of them have any type of decent "view" from any of the rooms -- your view is of the wraparound walkway and the cast-iron grillwork.

Finally -- the loudest rooms are NOT the ones facing the pool or the courtyards. The loudest rooms at POFQ are the rooms that are directly facing the river -- the boats pass every 15 minutes between late afternoon and 11:30 pm, and they are loud. They also now honk their horns as they approach the dock, and as they pass each other. Very loud. That is also the primary route for the horse-and-buggy carriages so you get loud clip-clopping every hour or so.

That being said, I wouldn't stay at any of the other resorts anymore. This is, by far, one of the best resorts for adults traveling without children on property.

I don't feel like I make it a hobby to bash Riverside....that is how I honestly feel....I will never stay at Riverside again. And I always recommend my friends don't either when they ask me for advice...I stayed there twice....neither time was great (too spread out, long bus waits, etc) and to me....two different trips spaced apart makes a trend.

Actually, from what I've read and heard, it's the French Quarter that gets blasted more than Riverside.
In The Complete Walt Disney World 2010 guide book it says "stay here only if the other moderates are full" among other jabs, while praising Riverside.
I was really surprised.
I don't know if that criticism is still in the 2011 edition.

I've stayed at both, and enjoyed them both.
But if forced to pick, I'd go with Riverside (as long as I'm guaranteed the Alligator Bayou Section).

I would certainly listen to this guy..hes been 11 times. Wow!! I can only tell you what my experience was on my two trips.

My understanding is that it Is USALLY the last stop on Dme...The rooms facing the pool are loud. Illuminations is Loud ..everynight.

I cant speak on the other issues he has raised since ive never had those experiences..Anyone whos ever been on The Boat to DTD knows how loud they are...some worse than others.

I loved It and, If anyone ever asks me where to stay at WDW I always answer Pofq. (moderates anyway) Have a great trip!!
