Actually as of last week there were rooms available for the 4th of July weekend at all resort levels. Currently only moderate and above are available. Normally that particular weekend is booked solid months in advance. Bookings at the resorts are definitely off from this time last year.

Sure couldnt tell that in the lobby of POR Saturday morning and at Magic Kingdom Sat night. Big change from the last couple weeks.

It is sad to see Legendary Years just going to waste. I wish they would build them and make some suites (but better suites than at ASMusic).

Wow - that picture is absolutely amazing ... a bit sad, but amazing.

I really had no idea how far along they'd gotten on it. Now that I see it doesn't appear to be at all close to completion it seems to me it would be smartest to tear it down (as opposed to trying to resurrect decaying partial structures I mean)

It's not just a matter of occupancy rates. It's also a question of how much and how often they have to discount rooms to achieve those occupancy rates. Add another thousand-something rooms across the lake at Pop and they would have to cut prices further to keep occupancy rates up.

It looks like WDW has decided not to add any more Value level resort buildings, including the other half of Pop Century.
(They could even change the name to Pop Culture since it will be only a half century.)

It's probably a matter of ROI - Return on Investment.

WDW gets more ROI by investing their money in Moderate, Deluxe, and DVC resorts than in a Value resort.

There are relatively fixed costs to operating a resort, regardless of room rates. Things like manning the front desk, maid service, supervisors, ME luggare handling, grounds upkeep, trash collection, repairs.

WDW gets much less revenue to overcome those fixed costs and make a profit when the room rates are Value level. They can put the same amount of fixed operating money into the higher level resorts and have a greater ROI.

It's like the slot machines in Las Vegas. It costs the casino just as much to maintain a nickel or quarter slot machine as it does to maintain a dollar slot machine. That's why there are a lot more dollar slots and only a few nickel slots.

It's just a basic business decision- do you want to get 5% return on your money or do you want 10-20% return.

Yes, the average profit per deluxe guest is higher than the average profit per value guest. But that doesn't necessarily tell you what the profit is at the margin for an extra value guest v. an extra deluxe guest. E.g. if they built a bunch of new deluxe resorts, they'd have to cut prices of deluxe rooms quite a bit to fill them. Airlines also earn higher profits on average for first- and business-class customers than on coach, but you don't see them ripping out all of the coach seats to expand business and first class seating.
