Polynesian Resort Renovation

I have a question about the pool ( the volcano one), what is the difference between what it looks like now and what it looked like in 1996 ( since the last refurb)? When i was there in Oct, i could tell something was different, but i couldnt put my finger on it...

There is quite a difference from what I can remember. The old pool had a rock formation with a waterfall on the pool side. There was a small waterslide in the formation. The pool was quite a bit smaller as well. Disneypix.com has some pictures before the renovation. Just do a search for Polynesian pool.

i know for a fact they just renovated hawaii (concierge building), i was just wondering what exactly they did to the rooms. i found a picture of a bathroom that looks alot nicer than it did last time i stayed there(was nice then too), but i wondered what the rest of the room looked like. As for the creeky floors, i've never noticed. after staying in a room with a lagoon view balcony i can't imagine staying anywhere else on the property.

We stayed in the Hawaii building this past December. The building had been renovated, but they kept the same design scheme. All the bedspreads, curtains, etc. are the same pattern, just new. Our room itself looked pretty nice and new, but there were a couple of pretty dark stains on the carpet. The shower head had been updated to the nice Waterpik ones like most of the resorts have. I've heard that there are plans (like Tikiman's website says) to actually change the decor in the rooms at the Polynesian, just just replace the old soft goods with new versions of the same pattern. I have no idea when this would happen though.

I'm wondering if the new shops will carry the same type of items that the former shops as a whole carried? Last time we went, we stopped in to get a bathing suit for me and everything was designer, therefore really expensive. Are they getting rid of this type of thing? Seeing as how the Poly is a deluxe resort, I understand why they would feel the need to have really expensive shops. I hope that the new shops offer inexpensive items too. Or rather should I say, I hope that there is atleast an equal balance of expensive and inexpensive to choose from:) There were always some inexpensive things, just not a great selection.

Post script: I thought the renovations for all of the buildings was completed this past fall/winter. Wasn't Tonga or Touvla (sp?) the final project?

The current rehabs (except the GCH) are supposed to be done.

New rehabs to replace decor and carpet and design are planned for all rooms.

The current decor isn't popular.

And as far as the shops go, I have no information on what shops will open, but I know that Wyland Galleries will take over the old News from Polynesia shop.

Ah. Well, first, the mountain was moved to the opposite side of the pool... and turned into a volcano. The silde is much longer and is in a "lava tube" now. The old slide was just a short drop off slide. The pool itself was re-built as a zero-entry pool on the lagoon side, and the hot tub was removed because there is now a "hot area" of the pool that is supposed to keep it warm in one area. Unfortunately, it's never as hot as the hot tubs.

However, as a guest of Disney's Polynesian Resort, you are allowed to use any and all services of the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, including use of the spa, health club, and the pool areas. And the Grand Floridian has hot tubs. Heh heh.

The volcano also included a built in barefoot bar which replaced the old one which was in a small tiki hut. The volcano also houses restrooms, which replaced the old restrooms, also housed in a tiki hut. The playground was removed from the Polynesian to allow for an interactive water fountain play area with dancing water jets. As I said before, guests can use anything at the Grand Floridian, and that includes their playground.

The new pool also includes a river effect similar to the one used at the Wilderness Lodge, though in my opinion, the one at the Lodge is much more stunning. Having said that, the Lodge doesn't have a volcano. ;)

I hope that answers your question. :)

Dose anyone here no what parts of the resort they are currently working on? I am going OCT 11th thru 15th and was wondering what to expect.

I just got back from my stay at the resort and this is what I saw is going on...

Rapa Nui is open but there are ongoing rehabs while it is open. Some of the rooms are done and others are being worked on. Fiji is also getting rehabbed and I am not sure if it is open while they work. The Great Ceremonial house work hasn't really started except for the clean up. The stores are closed and the new Boutiki shop has opened. Construction on the new Captain Cooks should begin sometime soon.

Where is the new Captain Cooks going? Where the arcade was?

I believe that it is being expanded in the area that it is in. They closed all the other shops in the Great Ceremonial House which seems like it would just move out in to those since the only boudaries are walls.

Does anyone know if the high speed internet access for the Polynesian was installed by August 15th as was being reported? We are going to Disneyworld at the end of October and was just curious...

If anything, there are more of the top end stores. Downstairs on the left (as you enter from the monorail/drive up) are stores with jewelry, $120 Hawaiian shirts, $300 sunglasses and the like. Where the old fine clothing store was is an art and jewelry gallery, pretty stuff, but more than much of the Disney film stuff. Upstairs right is still the basics and snacks, Capt. Cooks is the same downstairs.

Yes...the high speed hook ups are in the rooms.

Well, atleast we can agree - rehabs never seem to stay on schedule. Bldg 11 was supposed to be done by Mid-August at the latest. Add this to Raglan Road, the Contampory's extended dates, and ther such occurances and I think we can prove anything outside of a park fall into the "when we get around to it" category.

How true. But I would rather have a quality job that takes longer than a quick fix though.
