Hi All,
I just got back from Disney last night (was there for a 4 day weekend) and stayed at the Poly. This is my favorite resort at WDW. While I was shopping in their store News from Polynesia, we started talking to someone that worked there.
We noticed that a whole wall on the bottom floor of the Great Ceremonial House has been boarded up and a store was gone (forgot the name, something with Mickey in it, mainly costumes, charms and train sets. It is where you go to pick up items that you sent to your resort from MK). The man said he was a trainer that was helping out in the store that day so we assumed we could trust his info.
He said that the all the shops are going to be gone. They will all be turned into one and placed on the bottom floor and it will be called The Boutique. They are also gutting part of the back and adding in new bathrooms. He then said that next year they will start to redo all the rooms by giving them new configurations. I know they are in the process of redoing the longhouses, but I guess those are non-room changes that are going on at this point.
Personally, I like the Poly the way it is and am not a fan of change. Then another part of me says they are taking pride in their resort and are trying to make it more modern and new.
Like I said, this is info taken from one conversation, with one guy. Not sure if anyone out there can confirm this or has more info. :xmas:

As much as I hate to see change in my favorite WDW resort, I'm afraid this is kinda necessary. The clothing shop in the back has got to go. It can easily be replaced by a bigger generic shop.

However, if they even think about touching Trader Jack's or News From Polynesia, someone's gonna pay :)

Hopefully this is done tastefully.... (and then they move on to the next resort that might need help here and there... Contemporary..)

It's OK if they get rid of the $90 hawaiian shirt shop, good riddance! I just wish the'd bring back Captain Hooks Hideway...now that was a fun little bar! :o

The powers that be really need to go take a look at the Contemporary instead of the Poly, as their rehab services are much more needed at that resort. The rooms at the Poly are perfect in my opinion and don't need sprucing up. My room at the Contemporary, while there over Thanksgiving, could have used some good maintenance work, and the new bright colors aren't to my liking at all, too cartoonish, and not in keeping with the theme of the hotel. I liked the old decor much more, it blended better. I feel the hotel, as a whole, could use some major updating, making it feel like the new millinium has arrived and here is our version of it, lolol. It just looks too 70's space themed to me.:lookaroun

Contemporary will be getting a MAJOR refurb this year.......some of my hotels have booked groups that also look at the Contemporary, but did not book there due to the "anticipated heavy construction". To compensate, Contemporary has been dropping rate on many group leads like it is a Days Inn.....but since I went through this a few years ago with one of my properties, I know what they are going through.

From what I have heard, the new room product for Contemporay is quite nice.....I bleive the desk is glass/metal, and I think it will have Plasma TV's.

Also, I would expect the south wing to be knocked down at some point this year, and a new pool area to be contructed at the current pool site.

Haha, Plasma's at WDW, I can just imagine how fast those things would get killed...

Althouhgh, I do admit, the presidental suite at the Contemp was very "Plain" in my opinion...

I have heard one room in Contemporary has been redone, which is common....many hotels, when doing MAJOR renovation, will do a test room.....not only to make sure they like it, but also to show the clients as they come in for site visits.

Just a forwarning.....most of what Contemporary is doing is positioning the resort to become more of a convention property. From a financial aspect, conventions bring BOATLOADS of money to a hotel, and although WDW has no shortage of hotel rooms, they do not really have a high-class convention property (Dolphin/Swan are Starwood, and Coronado is mid-range, and usually gets fraternal and association groups, which do not have the deep pockets of corporate groups). None of the other properties really have enough space to compete with the off-property hotels, most of which have expanded their space, and have between 150K and 450K in convention space.

That being said, it may not be as easy to book a hotel room in the Contemporary when all of this is done......unless you are a DVC member.

Damn... We shall see, I just like the Contemp since you can walk to MK in 5 minutes flat...

Although, they did turn one of the old convention reception desks on the 3rd floor into the Checkin for the Cali Grill....

Although, the property just received a major renovation 8 years ago, and the rooms even less than that which is fairly recent in hotel terms

Most hotels have around a 6 year renovation cycle for guest rooms. I would think this cycle would be shorter at WDW due to a few factors, including higher than average occupancy, the amount of people in rooms (families are a lot harder on rooms than a single business traveler), and the want/desire to keep the room in top shape. Most hotels, as they approach the "6 year" timeframe, look pretty bad.......preventive maintenance can only do so much.

So are you refereing to the rummor that they are doing the next DVC resort at the wing of the CON? I thought that was really on hold since they decided to make SSR so big. Do you know something I don't know?

I am not sure about the status, but I ahve heard from two good, trustworthy sources that it is a go.

I would not be surprised if it is done during the major renovation work that will be going on at the hotel.....the renovation work will really turn the hotel upside-down, and will not be good for business or guests satisfaction. Even if the units are not "sold" right away....it would not surprise me if they are built.
